  1. The novel has many minor characters, including Mabel, Andrea, Henry and Emma. What role does each of these characters play in the lives of Julie and Mike? Why were they included in the novel? Of these four characters, who was the most important to the story? Who was the least important? Why?

  2. I think these characters lent depth to the story...... support from friends like Mabel, Emma and Henry..... and antaginostic feelings, like jealously and envy from Andrea......these characters supported and encouraged Julie's and Mike's feelings for each other, and also confirmed the "warning" signals about Richard that Julie was feeling..... I think Henry and Emma were the most important to Julie, since they were most supportative of her feelings that Mike was right for her - Henry was her husband's brother, and his affirmation of Mike as her boyfriend helped them both to get past any guilt......Andrea, sadly, was in my opinion the least important.....it could have been anyone - Richard just chose to "use" her to distract the outward appearance of his obsession with Julie - she did not matter in the least to him......

  3. There was certainly great importance in each of these characters, which makes it hard to pick a "worst" and "best". Mabel was a friend to Julie when she needed her the most, giving her a job and a shoulder to lean on. Henry lent guidance to Mike, which in turn led to his courage with Julie. Emma, of course, is the great woman standing with her man and also another good friend to Julie. Andrea's part didn't seem too significant, until I noticed her attraction to bad boys. I had a sick feeling she would end up in trouble. She was just too young and had clouded vision when it came to men and she wasn't mature enough to understand the gravity of Julie's concerns about Richard. Her story was truly tragic (but I'm glad she was on the mend as the story concluded).
