Richard becomes obsessive about Julie, despite the fact that he barely knows her. Is this more or less frightening than knowing someone for years before obsession sets in? Is this realistic? How much, if any, of this was Julie’s fault? How would you react in a situation like this? Is Richard a psychopath or a sociopath, or both?

It was not Julie's fault, Richard had some issues. I think it is very realistic, and it's frightening no matter how long you've known a person. I would call the cops, keep a record of all the incidents and definitely have Mike over more often...lol

I agree AL is was NOT Julie's fault..... I think Richard's obsession with Julie was triggered by her similarity in looks to his wife Jessica - they even had the same initials, so he gave her the same locket...... but most of all, I think Richard's psycotic behavior was a result of the abuse as a child....most psycos were abused children...... he also displayed sociopath characteristics - desiring love and affection, but not knowing how to cultivate them in a normal way - he tried to "force" it, wanting Julie to behave and react like he thought she should........ he also didn't "get" it that she was trying to disengage herself, he continued to think she still wanted to be with him.
