  1. I've never pickled anything (I do adore pickled beets though). I always just drink the juice when the pickles are gone and had no idea you could use it for anything at all!! And I LOVE putting pepper on my pickles. Think I'll go have some right now!

  2. Hee Hee, I'm crunching on one right now! I almost dropped it when I saw this thread. I have a great weakness for dill pickles - especially during a certain time of the month...

  3. Mmmmmmmmmm pickles. I have been the official onion pickler for our girls until recently when Meegz decided to do her own. Our late dog Nellie loved to eat pickled onions, we reckoned they improved her breath!

  5. I love Claussen pickles.
When the pickles are all gone, I slice up fresh cucumbers and let them marinate in the remainder of the pickle juice...tastes really good and lasts for a few weeks.

  6. When the pickled onions are all gone I save the pickling juice and put about 1/2 cup into the pot when cooking corned silverside. Also I believe McDonalds staff here use the pickle juice to help clean the grease off the grills.

  9. PICKLES GALORE!!! This is my dream website! Second only to TDK, of course.

Moonshadow, what is corned silverside? Is it a fish?

  10. I actually had a good time playing all the games at the site. What a nerd, eh?

  11. Corned silverside is the same thing as corned beef. :)

  12. LL, I believe it's the same as corned beef..... pickeling would be good in that kind of receipe!..... almost like a "secret" ingredient in the background!

  13. I've tried to pickle onions on occasion in leftover pickle juice....never quite works out.

Posted 4 months ago by Arcalian #

  14. Arcalian, try bringing the onions to a boil in the leftover pickle juice, let it cool and return it to the jar and refrigerate. I do this with mushrooms and it works very well, but I've never tried onions......Best sandwich ever is pita bread spread with cream cheese, then add sharp cheddar, sprouts and dill pickles. Waaaaay YUMMMM!!!!

  19. I love dill pickles....my Grandma used to make the best dills! When we lived away, we came back for a visit and she loaded us up with some glass jars of dills, well, they broke in the airport and got all over the 'conveyor' belt in security!!!! Needless to say, they were NOT pleased with the overwhelming smell! LOL! I do love the Clausson garlic dills!

  20. Am I being taunted here????? *can't stand to not be in the know and visits website*

ACK!!! I love dill pickles!!! But,as you can probably imagine, I haven't had one in a long time. Those new Vlasic commercials are driving me crazy, though - that crunch!!!!

When I was little they had big vats of pickles at the movie theaters. I always got a pickle and my friends got candy. Guess I was strange even at an early age.

  21. WWM, you are a good girl for avoiding them with your low-salt diet :)

  22. *sigh* Sometimes trying to eat healthy just totally sucks.

  23. I love kosher dills with a passion. Especially the ones that they serve at the deli near work. The sandwich guys all know that if I don't get at least 4 spears, I will come back and ask for more! They are my salty vice and guilty pleasure.

  24. I'm grateful to my brother. Big burly master carpenter that he is. Using my mother's recipes, he has taught himself to make pickles of all kinds. MMM..so good! Especially the pickle relish. And the beets. And the bread&butter...and ....

  25. My aunt used to make the best chow-chow ever! I haven't had it in years because I would always compare any that I had to hers.

Posted 4 months ago by WillowandWindismom #

  26. WWM! Chow-chow! Yum! And is there anything better than hot pickled green tomatos? Especially when eaten with crispy fried catfish?

Howl! I wanna go home to mom's house and eat myself sick!

Posted 4 months ago by lisaeylau #

  27. Nothing wrong with pickled onions WWM. If you follow my Mum's recipe - no salt, just lots of vinegar and cloves and allspice and other stuff. Mind you they do make you f..t a lot!

  28. What is chow chow? I always thought it was a small fluffy dog!

    Posted 4 months ago by Pollys_Mum_in_UK_2605 #

  29. PM. chow-chow is a southern US treat, a pickled relish that might have just about any veggie in it, depending on the recipe, and recipes are handed down in families like prized jewels! And kept equally secreted! The base is usually cabbage, red peppers, and onions, then name-your-spice all chopped fine and pickled. The taste is a combo of sweet-sour-hot. The color can vary from yellow to green or in-between depending on the veggies used. You eat it along with black eyed peas, roast, chicken, fried fish, cornbread, anything. Even though taste, color and spice (heat) can vary widely, it is always Yummy when it's homemade.
