I'm really worried about sumi, now 10 weeks old. Yesterday morning I went in to let her out of her safe room (still don't trust miso with her loose at night) and saw she had vomited up her dinner from the night before, plus had pretty bad diarrhea. Brought her down to the vet, they rehydrated her but only subcutaneously, as they said her veins are so tiny. Took her home an hour later, no interest in food, then more vomiting, more diarrhea. Tried to give her dioralyte in water by syringe. She did swallow it, but was sleeping a lot. Late last night I rang the emergency vet number to ask them if I was doing the right thing. They said bring her in, she's too small and needs a drip. So I did, and collected her at midday today. They said she was great, feisty about the IV of course, but alert, and that she had eaten a little bit (which I don't think she had). Took her home 2 hours ago. She vomited within an hour, and has had 3 bouts of diarrhea since. She's very alert, and hates me trying to gently wipe her sore little bum with luke warm water and cotton wool. I rang the emergency vet again (my vet is not in until tomorrow morning) and they seemed uninterested, said wait another hour or more, see if she has more bouts, which she has now. They suggested the stress of taking the catheter out could have caused the extra diarrhea, which I think is nuts. Any advice, TDKers? Should I just hydrate her, wait til tomorrow morning? The emergency vet is very expensive of course, but if she has something serious, I don't care.

Did the emergency vet have any idea about why she is sick? Have they run any tests on a fecal or blood sample? It sounds like they are treating symptoms only until you can take Sumi to your regular vet. If you are worried she might not make it until then, ask them to keep her until she can be taken directly to your vet. {{{hugs}}}

Thank you KW. I spoke to a vet again, and he said as long as I keep her hydrated and she doesn't have too much diarrhea she'll be ok til tomorrow. But she's had several more bouts. Her diarrhea is green now, and she is crying constantly because of the pain. Also every time she gets into the litter box she ends up with litter sticking to her little behind, it's all such a mess, and she won't let me wipe it away without squealing, crying and growling. She is very upset. I am getting the fluid into her, but I feel there is something more than just a bug here, or else it's a severe one. Why does this always happen on a weekend? Going to ring the emergency people again right now.

Emergencies do always seem to happen on the weekend. I hope Sumi comes through this quickly and gets back to being a happy, healthy kitten. :)

Is there any other emergency vet in a nearby town for a second opinion?
My Romeo had a similar issue when he was about 9 weeks old, antibiotics really helped albeit we never found the cause.
I also concur with KW, any blood work or fecal sampling done? Could it be an infectious cause such as parasites. This really needs to be looked into as it would not clear on its own.

Just back from emergency vet again. They don't think it's a serious underlying cause although he did think the diarrhea looked a bit mucousy. She screamed the building down when they took her temp, so sore for the poor little darling. They washed her bum and put some soothing cream on, gave her another antibiotic injection and more subcutaneous fluids. She wasn't too dehydrated which is good. He says it's a bacteria and it will run its course but it will pass. She's exhausted now, hasn't slept much at all since yesterday, and is asleep, but already had more diarrhea since coming home. She's growling and squeaking all the time. I feel so helpless for her - just want to make it better. I'll sit up all night with her if necessary, and bring her to my vet first thing in the morning. The emergency vet offered to keep her but didn't think it necessary at all. I suppose they see so many of these cases, but to us it's awful to watch.

Poor little sweetie. Romeo was given oral Flagyl, apparently it helps restore normal healthy gut bacteria. I was terrified, because it is dangerous to give to human babies, but apparently OK for kitties. Maybe you can ask whether or not Flagyl could help.
Hope both of you get some much needed rest.Posted 2 years ago by Tigerlilly #

Bumping this post to ask everyone for white light on my little sum-sum, who is so ill. I'm keeping watch by her. She's better at home, but I am praying she'll turn the corner tonight and start to improve. I'm just letting her sleep at the moment. She has no interest in food or water, but I think her fluids are ok for an hour or two anyway. Some thoughts and light towards Ireland please everyone....

Poor little thing, I hope the antibiotics work quickly! I am praying for both of you!

Eleniki, did the vet test for coccidia? My baby Kimchi (the one who I joined this for!) had severe vomitting and diarrhea (and his little bum was raw too)- the Korean vet just gave him shots but when I finally got a fecal- his feces were loaded with the parasite coccidia. Coccidia can cause vomitting and diarrhea (and usually traces of blood w/ mucus too). It's a very common parasite (i've had other pets with it in the US)- Kimchi's been on meds and it's firmed things up- I'll have to get another fecal to see if the levels of coccidia go down. The meds don't kill the parasite- they prevent it from reproducing...the immune system has to kill the rest of them. Sending healing purrs and human prayers for your baby!

Very good point Kim.
Here is one of many helpful websites:

I believe that deworming alone does not take care of this. Hopefully, a more knowledgable TDKer can pitch in
Please ask your regular vet ASAP.Posted 2 years ago by Tigerlilly #

Thanks for that Kimchikat and Tigerlilly. We got through the night - I set my alarm 3 times, and gave her a fresh hot water bottle each time. Though it's summer here, the night was chilly enough, and she finds it a comfort I know, and also the heat helps the soreness. She was cuddled on the bottle, wrapped in a towel, every time I went in to her. 2 further small episodes of diarrhea, none now for 3 hours. No interest in food or drinking on her own. I syringed her with pure water through the night, as the dioralyte seems to bring on bowel activity with her. I'm now thinking this may have been caused by her worming tablet, given the day before she showed symptoms. I think they're too strong for kittens. We're off to my regular vet now, and I will be asking the coccidia question. Will update you later, thanks again.

Poor little baby! Sending healing energy for little Sumi, thank goodness she got through the night. The hot water bottle would definitely have helped, it's always hard to keep warm when you're sick. You might well be right about the worming tablet. {{{HUGS}}} to both of you, please let us know what the vet says as soon as you're back, we are worried too.

Thanks Jcat, I'm just back, and sumi is still there :(
They want to try to put her on a drip again, as she now needs nourishment. She's so squirmy and squealy that they may not be able to, in which case they'll give her sub-cutaneous fluids again. She's only marginally dehydrated, hardly at all in fact, because of the fluids and syringes she's been getting. But she's hardly there at all, she's so thin! Kittens lose weight so fast. They're giving her cream for the raw bum, and a little ulcer tablet to try to stimulate her appetite. The thing now is to make her eat. Still no diahrrea since 6am, so far as I know. I'm hoping we're on the home run to complete recovery from this. Still need white light though! -
They got the iv line on her, but I was wrong, it doesn't contain any nourishment, just the electrolytes she needs. So, she has to eat. They gave her the ulcer tablet and it did seem to make her a little interested - apparently she licked at some food. That was when I spoke to them on the phone 2 hours ago. I'm picking her up in another few hours. Then it depends on whether she has more diarrhea and if she eats for me, as to whether I bring her back in again for more fluids tomorrow. This is going on too long..

We're back from the vet, and the first thing sumi did was have diarrhea. She didn't have any all day, on her fluids. I am so upset. She is going downhill, but I'm going to try to make her take some chicken broth. It's been 3 full days since she's eaten, and the tablet didn't work. They're saying now they will test for FeLV tomorrow, even though she's so young. Please, prayers, white light. She is duller tonight.

Keeping Sumi in my prayers. Poor little girl, I hope she has the strength to pull through this.

I'm so sorry little Sumi is sick, I'm really wishing hard for her to rally and get better.
Baby food sometimes works when nothing else does. If you warm it up just a little she might be better able to smell it. Cats need to smell their food to become interested. If you don't have ready access to the baby food, just boil some chicken and puree it. As long as it's cooked it shouldn't hurt her and it might help.
Since you are trying to both feed her and keep her hydrated, maybe you can dilute the baby food with warm water and feed it to her through the syringe you used for the dioralyte. You might also try a little bit of plain yogurt that way.

thanks everyone. I managed to get her to take about a half teaspoon of cooked chicken breast pureed in warm water - she even lapped at the liquid. But immediately had more diahrrea. And now is not interested in the food. So we're simmering some broth, just chicken, no skin, nothing else. And I will syringe it luke warm into her throat. It's as if she wants to eat, approaches the saucer all interested, then just can't. I am shattered myself, and my partner Jan is just in from work and is making her broth. I did ask about coccidia Tigerlilly, and they agreed it could be a possibility, but that the immediate treatment would be the same. Her youth is against her, as young animals suffer more severe symptoms from coccidia, and so do immuno-compromised animals, which is why they want to test her blood if they can get any tomorrow. I think they suspect FeLV. I don't see that they could take enough blood, as the area between her skin and bones is diminishing.

I feel so awful for you and for Sumi. I hope you don't have to make that final hard decision but know that we all support you and have been in your position ourselves.

She took 3ml of plain chicken broth by syringe. She is perkier now. Had a piddle, which is good because it shows she has fluid to spare. No diarrhea this time, so here's praying she has no more. I'm setting the alarm again for her hot bottle and her warm broth, 3 hourly intervals. She is such a sweet little angel, she always makes her way down off her perch where I've set up a comfy bed on top of a suitcase (she chose this spot and I can't get her to stay in her bed on the ground) to get to her litter box, even with a horrible awkward catheter strapped to her tiny leg.

Hard topic for me sorry. When you have a FelV+ cat you have a cat with no immune system. This leaves them open to everything with no immune system to fight any disease. Lysine can be given to a FeLV+ cat to help--normally will extend their life significantly. If he is FeLV+ and has a bacterial infection it will be very difficult to get blood--probably the consistancy of water and rusty colored. If you have a pharmacy try and get some lysine and give him a few drops--it helps rebuild the immune system. I am really suprised your vet didn't already test her. Prayers of strength and comfort--this is in insideous virus.
