sumi vomiting with diarrhea
(80 posts)-
thanks to everyone posting support and care. We're through another night, more diahrrea-this is her 4th day of it, still won't eat but is interested in the saucer. Goes up to it, sniffs, purrs, nearly laps, tries again, but something is stopping her short of eating or lapping. She's had small syringes doses of broth, and just now I ground some dry kitten food and made a liquid paste with chicken broth, then syringed about 2ml into her mouth. She doesn't object, though she doesn't really participate either. I think the vets are concerned that this is an immune deficiency illness, which is preventing her body overcoming the bacteria. I will get lysene this morning. Thanks again

Any news?

Elenki, has anyone pointed you in the direction of Gini, the TDKer who has the gorgeous Taco? He was very, very sickly as a kitten, and I'm sure his symptons were similar. I'll see if I can find a link for you.

I'm sorry to post so late - it's so wonderful to see the messages coming in, I appreciate them and you all so much. It's been a long day, and there is good and bad to report, but overall, I am feeling good, and so so much better than last night, when we really thought little sumi was going downhill suddenly. We settled her around 1.30am, after the darkest night. Her diarrhea was awful, and she was squealing with the pain of it. At one point I held her in my lap, and she just sat looking straight into my eyes with that hollowed look, like an old spirit, and she cried non-stop for 10 minutes. It was so plain what she was saying to me - make it stop. We had syringed chicken broth and some kibble puree into her mouth and she had swallowed it, but wouldn't eat herself. At 4am I looked in and she was fast asleep so I let her little gut have the rest. At 6am she had vile diahrrea and I tried some minced chicken mushed in broth. She was squealing on the bed as I tried desperately to wipe her poor raw behind, when suddenly she leaned down to the saucer and began to eat. That simple. Who could ever have thought such a simple sight would bring such joy? She didn't eat a whole lot, but it was enough.

Tears on this end. She may very well have coccidia, and we just have to pray that her little body can fight it off until it runs its course.
Continued prayers coming your way. Sweet little one, please continue to fight. You're doing an awesome job MOM.

Here's a link to the thread with the chip in page that was done for Taco - if you click on the link on Gini's first post, you'll be able to read Taco's story:

After her meal, we both slept til 9am, then I tried her with more of the same food. There was more diarrhea, sad to say, but she ate 3 large teaspoons of chicken in broth after, and seemed to relish them. I was over the moon!
Then down to the vet for fluids. I had a good talk, about 30 minutes with the vet I have come to respect most of the excellent team down there. Ruth answered every question and considered every option. Blood tests were taken, and sumi is showing NEGATIVE for FIV and FeLV. I was so happy about that, though I know it's not always definitive at such a young age. One vet thought this might mean she has irritable colon disease, but Ruth doesn't agree - she says she's too young to manifest symptoms of that. She thinks it's a bad parasite bacteria disease, and has now taken swabs, but they take ages to come back, because they have to grow things. Sumi got a vitamin injection, with Lysine, and another antibiotic injection. She got all her electrolytes today, AND she ate a large portion of her food, which I brought down with me. They also gave her another ulcer pill to stimulate the appetite further. I asked Ruth was there anything she could do to stop the diarrhea which is so debilitating, and she said she is very reluctant to give a tiny kitten a bowel immobilizer, as it can result in complete gut stasis, nothing moving. She would like to see the bacteria pass through her system naturally, and she's fully confident it will. It's just taking a very long time. If we had diarrhea for 4 full days, we'd be in hospital, and we're a bit bigger than sumi. There is no infection in sumi's urine either, and she still has no temperature. Her heart is strong and steady. Since coming home, she has slept, then had a small bit of painful diarrhea, then RAVENOUSLY ate 2 more saucers of her special concoction, and is now fast asleep on her hot water bottle again. She was purring and looked brighter. She won't eat anything other than the chicken and broth, but that is just fine with me. I am feeling optimistic, specially as I asked Ruth if she honestly thought sumi would make it, and she looked so astonished, and said 'Absolutely. There is no question of that. She is going to be a really gorgeous cat, and stronger for having come through this'. Well, you couldn't ask for a more reassuring answer could you? So, I'm believing. And I believe it was all the good energy and light sent by all of you that helped us. Thank you. I will keep you posted. She goes back again in the morning and gets more fluids and the catheter then has to come out. She'll be thrilled about that. Sorry, this ended up being a huge block of text after all... -
That's great news Eleniki, I am so pleased for you. Your vet sounds wonderful and I'm glad she's so confident. I hope Sumi will go from strength to strength now that she is eating again.

Sending prayers and healing white to little Sumi!! Eleniki, you're doing everything right; just keep it up..... I had a three week bout of 'unknown disease' with my Bixby when he was young; he's over the bridge now, but he lived 19+ happy years with me before he left for the meadow. The first vet (nasty ba***tard), wanted me to 'put him down', so I immediately found another wonderful 'cat friendly' vet, and we nursed him thru with syringe feedings of strained Gerber baby meats, sub q fluids and lots of love and patience. I am praying hard that you and Sumi will have the same happy result. {{{Hugs}}}

Thank you Tigerlilly and fa. And to all the TDKers who've been in touch via catster as well. It's pretty overwhelming, and it means a lot. Sumi is much stronger and brighter this morning. She only had one tiny bout of diarrhea just now, but none at 4am when I fed her and warmed up her water bottle. I think it's abating, I really do. Going to the vet now, I will let you all know. There's a happy story from the vet too, about an abandoned dog I met there yesterday, who I've found a home for. I'm meeting my friend there when I bring sumi down now, and she's taking the dog for her elderly parents whose beloved labrador passed over a year ago.
