I think someone must have hijacked her e-mail account. There are many variations on the stry the scammers use to bilk people out of their money. As hokey as the e-mails are, they do make a fair amount of money off the unwary.

Perhaps now is the time to address internet security.
1) never, ever, anytime anyway respond to begging emails even when they look like they came from a friend. This is another way of giving your money and piece of mind away.
2) posting your email on the web is waving a red flag. The bulls will charge. That is why everyone of us should setup a free account for using with special groups and activities. These can be discarded like old tissue and new ones setup as needed.
3) the " me at somewhere dot com" is just a delaying tactic. If they want you they can find you.
4) Interested in that shiny gee-gaw you got in an email? Don't click on the link type in the URL to the site directly and search for the item. A pain I know but less trouble than thinking you are ordering a supper-whammy-zip-zip from spiffy-place dot com only to send money to train terrorist in ZYX country.
5) Your bank will never-ever send you an email with a link to correct an error on your account.
6) Once you are secure in a contact setup a password (do not label it password) use it in the first or last sentence of the email.
This is just a start.
Let us be internet saavy and safe.

And as an addendum to Ailuromaniac's great ideas:
The IRS isn't going to email you either.
You aren't going to be emailed for jury duty.

wow ya i got one too......i thought when i saw the subject it was going to be about one of our usual cute things, like a story abouta cat being loaned or sumthing....then i read the thing and was like what the ****? well, since she can't access her mail, her id has defiantely been hacked. it's shame we can't get hackers to attack the accounts of the scummy people on the net, and not take advantage of god people like angie........
whew, and i was gonna cuss her out for such scams! glad i didnt!

Sox's Mom's alert http://www.dailykitten.com/chat/topic/18721
I have asked the Kitten Master to merge these two topics so that all internet security discussion this has elicited will remain together.

And always report these sorts of things to your Hosting service/email provider. They may be able to block them or trace them.

Also don't believe any emails you might get about friends getting arrested and needing bail out money and needing it sent via Western Union.

...yeah, I got one too.... this is a common scam going around right now, so is the one where it says " so and so (a name of someone you would know) has sent you photos..... then you have to join something to see them - don't do it!....you can always sent another email generated by you to that friend to ask if he/she sent you some photos, chances are they didn't!.... so be careful!.....
... So Ange, how is Nigeria this time of year! LOL

angie deqr, i just hope u didnt save too much personal info there. soemtimes you can accidently click an email or link, and pow. some years ago, soemone stole my bank info and was having fun with it thru a fake ebay email. i thankfully recovered, but it was still terrible.

Nope not much other then emails. Confirmations of online purchase reciepts but even those are all from my old canceled visa so thye cna't get money through it! Just making my live miserable as I run around trying to run and save everything. After my total scan of my system there was only one low risk and it was a tracking cookie which my Norton fixed. So I am still not sure how they did it!
It was either through an facebook contact or my personal option is through yahoo it's self. It says you forgot your password if you mark it as a possible compromise they let you immediately back in to your account so you can change the email. So then you use the new password with the email addy and your in! Again Should any one prefer I completely remove your email address from my new account I understand and will do so immediately!
