Russian cat trainer
Friday, 25 April 2008
For almost 30 years, Moscow-based Yuri Kuklachev and his cast of cats have been wowing audiences the world over with their amazing cat tricks.A typical show combines human slapstick with breathtaking feline acrobatics and grace. Cats run tightropes. They sway on perches, leap from pole to pole, or weave neatly between Yuri’s footsteps.
It’s hard to doubt their contentment as they stretch up to nuzzle his face. Yuri tells says it all began 35 years ago, when he found a stray kitten freezing in a Moscow park. Intrigued by the cat’s tumbling, he set about training it as part of his act with the Moscow Circus. It was a partnership that lasted 22 years. Romashka was soon joined by a dog, Pate, and from there, there was no turning back.
“People say it is impossible to train cats, and it’s true, you cannot make a cat do anything he doesn’t want to do. Cats respond only to love and kindness. The performances are led by them.” As he speaks, he sets about transforming his face, starting with a blob of flesh-coloured putty, which he blends onto the tip of his nose.
“It is something that comes from within, but I’ve written a book about it. It’s called ‘Lessons of Kindness,’ he says. “They’re using it in schools.”
Cats, he explains, react to tone of voice, not to words, and they prefer night rehearsals, since they are nocturnal by nature. A labour of love, the theatre is also a family endeavour. Yuri’s son, Dmitri has followed in his father’s footsteps, while his wife, Yelena also takes part in performances. Yuri’s original performers were strays, including two from England, the last of a cast of 17 which he trained for his UK tour 16 years ago.
Within the theatre, three generations sit in hushed anticipation as the show begins. “Long ago, from a distant galaxy…” intones a voice in the dark.
What follows is by turns entertaining and out of this world. Soon ‘Uncle Yuri’ is pulling up four excited youngsters from the audience to make human springboards, while cats bounce lightly from one back to the next. The cats shimmy along parallel bars, or curl, perfectly poised around the set.
Just as you think you’ve seen it all, there’s a sharp intake of breath as a tortoiseshell executes a perfect front paw-stand from Yuri’s outstretched palm.
At the end of the two hour show, the clown’s face is suddenly serious. He invites all the children to gather round, while he tells them of the wonder of animals and how to treat them with respect and kindness. They listen intently. A new generation of Russians has come under the Kuklachev spell.

There's a similar show in Vegas. Usually I don't really care for these things , but the one in Vegas is made excliusively of resued kitties who were in kill shelters. There's even a kitty in the Vegas show whose skill is to "do nothing" except look pretty!

Hi guys...as soon as I saw this topic, I knew what it was about without watching the video.
You never see it on TV because it was a Super Bowl ad in about 1990.
I was working for EDS Corporate Communications when the ad came out. It was used to launch a new logo for EDS, the first new one they'd had since Ross Perot founded the company, 26 years before.
I thought it was brilliant and that they should use it for a long time. It aired maybe 10 times altogether after the Super Bowl and then pulled it permanently. But marketing feedback showed that the target audience (CEOs and CIOs) didn't "get it."
It was unbelievably expensive to make. Those are real cats. Computer animate had not been invented yet.

The cat herders just crack me up as Mr MS was a shepherd when we married. It is so easy to picture. Cat herding would be so much harder than sheep, sheep really are dumb and just follow one another.

Argh, I can't see youtube on my work PC but I'll have to check on the home PC later. I suspected by the title however this was the EDS ad, Lisaeylau you worked there too? I still work for them and there are folks even now who only know EDS because of the cat herder ad! I think it won an award of some kind if I remember correctly. I'm glad to have a link to it...thanks for posting it Tina!

I laughed at the video and thought it was amazing to see how many cats they used to make the ad. What was amazing was that at the end it was for EDS (I interviewed for one of their partners once but didn't get the job).

Anne R, I worked at EDS Plano from 1986-1994. Very good times, insane hard work, wouldn't trade it for anything, wouldn't do it again. I think the crazy corporate culture has been watered down quite a bit since I was there. We couldn't even wear pants. I started counting backward, and I think ran closer to 1992 or 1993 than 1990. Anyway, it's still a hoot.

Hi Lisa, sounds like you were in the thick of things in Plano - you joined when Ross Perot was still there. I've been w/EDS since 1985 but I've been in Atlanta the whole time. Last time I was in Plano was '06, you wouldn't recognize the campus now. You are right about the culture too, not only can we wear pants now, they just amended the dress code to allow JEANS!! ;o) HP bought EDS last year and we are in transition now so there are many more changes to come....but I'm just grateful to have a job!
