Kitten with Inguinal Hernia

  1. My mother found a kitten on Sunday out by our bonfire pit. We took her to the vet yesterday to find out what the lump by her groin was. (We are assuming the mother cat left her for this reason) He told us it was an inguinal hernia, and when he tried to push it back into place it just returned. She is about three weeks old and to get the surgery necessary to repair the hernia, she has to reach at least 3lbs (she is .5lbs right now).
The vet doesn't know exactly what organs are out of place due to the hernia, and he gave us the option of sticking it out, or euthanasia. We chose to raise her as long as we can. One problem that we have had is that she hasn't defacated since we found her. She is feeding well, eliminating otherwise, and is still very spunky and vocal. I don't know if it's just because she doesn't have to go, or if there is a more serious problem.
If anyone has raised a cat with a similar congenital defect or can offer any advice, I am forever grateful... We really want her to survive.

  2. How long have you had her? What is she eating?
Did the vet say anything in regards to this issue?
    BTW, welcome to TDK

  3. We've had her for nearly three days, and we've been feeding her the Hartz Milk Replacement for kittens.
The vet said that the hernia didn't seem to be causing her pain, but we'd have to make sure that she kept eating and eliminating, which she is doing, but I'm still worried because I'm already attached to her.

Here's some information as to how to raise a kitten; it includes info on how you need to stimulate them (like Mama cat would) in order to help them poop.
Most inguinal hernias , unless they become incarcerated ( a piece of bowel slips in and cannot come out) should not cause a problem.
Hopefully others here with lots of expertise will pitch in.
