  1. Hi, im new the forum. Nice to meet you lol.

I have recently purchased a Ginger kitten yesterday shes about 12 weeks old, Does any one have advice or tips, I have a puppy and i havnt introduced them yet, does any one have any advice on how to introduce them to one another. Another slight issue i did read the forum stick FAQ and noticed the outdoor/indoor issues.I need a little advice on this please dont be rude to one another i dont want to start an argument on my first post :). I used to have cat called tilly she was a rescue kitten which i raised, she recently passed away at the age of 6 due to an idiotic driver who didnt even apolgise he simply said " im a taxi driver i dont need to stop " so of course i got very angry with him and details wont be spoken of, and i have been up over the past weeks with my young girl in tears. So i asked her if she would like kitten. I did say this isnt a replacement nothing will be like tilly, which she took comfort in, back to some advice i need, im unsure if i want her to be an outdoor cat but i was thinkin about taking her walk when shes old enough. What do you think. Thank you...

  2. Welcome to TDK J!!! I have 3 kitties, 14 yr old and 2 kitties 1 1/2 yrs. My 14 yr old used to be an indoor/outdoor kitty and though I was lucky she was never injured by a car, I have seen so many that have been. Mine are now all indoor kitties because we have 4 very mean pitbulls next door that have already once attacked my kitten (luckily I was able to fight them off).
Do you have any pictures of your kitty??

I am afraid about my pup attacking her, so i dont know whether to keep my pup outdoors hes not an aggresive dog he wouldnt hurt a fly but he plays realy rough. No not yet she i have a few blury ones because she runs of when im about to take one :)she cant sit still.

  4. Kitty was okay, I was at the hospital for about 6 hours though!! It was worth it!!! As far as your dog, I would just make sure you introduce them very slowly and make sure you closely supervise. Usually it doesn't take too long before the kitty will be pushing the dog around!!!LOL If you would like to meet my furry family you can click on the picture to the left and it will take you to their catster page.

  5. J, if you start early, your kitten can be trained to walk on a leash and harness. That way you can take her out to enjoy the grass and sunshine, but know that she will remain safe and protected. Indoor kitties live a lot longer than outdoor kitties, especially those that are in cities. You can make these outings with your kitty and daughter special times and build really nice memories.

As for the pup and the kitten, introduce them slowly. Have each sleep on a towel and then swap the towels so that each gets the scent on the other. If you have a baby gate you can let them see each other and smell each other through that next. Then supervised play time and hopefully after that full integration. As long as the pup isn't agressive then a little rough and tumble play shouldn't hurt either. Kitten's love to pounce and wrestle and I have seen many cat/dog friendships.

  6. I have a large herd. 3 dogs and 2 cats. I had 2 dogs when Teaser came to take up residence with me. One dog was 10 months and Teaser was 8 weeks. Everyone was fine--although my 8 year old dachshund was great with the kitten and not so good with puppy! Deuter joined us a little over a year ago when he was 10 days old and I hand raised Deuter and his brother. I introduced them to my dogs when they were 3 months old. My collie/shepard mix is afraid of cats so she ran. My dachshund was difficult and I took their blankets and swapped them often. The scent exchanged helped them to adapt to each other. On Mother's Day this year my daughter brought home an 8 week old Basset Hound puppy. Now Sherlock and Deuter are the very best of friends--they are always together! My 13 year old dachshund has CHF and doesn't like either of them, but the queen has her chair, pillow, and bed. My collie/shepard mix watches over them. Teaser is a very standoffish cat so she isn't social with anyone.

Get their smell exchanged and then watch them. I put Sherlock on a leash first so I could tug it if he was too rough. It didn't take long and they are all over the house romping.

My cats are strictly indoor cats. There are too many things that happen to cats--cars and dogs are pretty harsh. I do take Deuter out on a leash--he isn't to fond of the great outdoors. He does like to sleep in his sun spot on the window ledge.

Welcome to TDK and I look forward to hearing your stories as they get used to each other!!

  7. Welcome! I don't see anything wrong with training your kitten to walk with a harness & leash. Just be sure she has all her shots and is microchipped in case she decides to go out without you!

  8. i have a 17-year old kitty who walks with a harness and a leash and she is fine, but i never leave her alone outside. i moved to my new apt. in February and she is starting to be a bit forgetful. she stops what she was doing as if to say "what was i just doing?" and then she's fine. also there are yappy and barking dogs next door that i think don't like cats, so there are all the reasons i don't let her outside alone. but with me and on a harness and lead, she's fine !!!

  9. Thanks for your advice, i think i mite introduce a harness in about a month once shes settled into our house hold and our puppy. I have got a baby gate but she can fit through the gate, if worst came to worst with her and my pup not getting on , ill have to let the puppy go to my freinds farm, hopefully they will get on. I kept my pup outside last night just so she could get used to the house and settle and not be stressed by armani. ill introduce them tomorow im some what dredding it.

  10. Your puppy will pick up on that dread and react to the kitten as a threat. Make the introductions after scent introductions with a blanket or towel that they sleep on. Then introduce them slowly. Be assured if you act afraid your pup will think the fear is because of the kitten and will want to defend you. I love Cesar Millan the Dog Whisperer--he has great tips for introducing dogs and cats.
