I am going to go visit my Grandparents in Arkansas on Saturday through the next Saturday and while I'm there they might be getting a cat. I was wondering if you guys think they are to old to be getting one. They are in there 70s and maybe early 80s. I know if we do go and get one, it should be atleast five years old, don't you think?

I think a pair of older/senior kitties (related or ones that are already used to each other). One may demand more attention than 2 . There are so many older kitties in need of homes...

Hi CF, I don't think they are too old at all but you are on the right track about them getting an older cat. Our local rescue organization even has a deal for seniors to get a senior cat, they give a discount on the adoption and vetting fees. Older cats are more set in their ways and tend to be trained, plus they love having a more quiet home environment. That is great news, your Grandparents sound like wonderful folks!

One is never too old to love. But, I agree they they should adopt an elderly cat to cherish in it's declining yrs. The poor old discarded beasts would heap tons of love and gratitude and both they and the cat/cats would have a greater understanding and tolerance of progressive infirmity.

What wonderful company an older kitty (kitties) will be for your grandparents, CF! You are never too old to have a kitty! But I do think that adopting an older kitty is the way to go. And as TL said, there are so many that desperately need a home.

I am beginning to think I need to call Mom and tell her she is way to old for Brute! She just got a puppy last fall from Boxer Rescue. 2 years ago when my Grandfather died on July 4th, my grandma, then 82, adopted a kitten--China the color of her bone china plates. Adopting an older cat is an option, but don't sell the ability of your grandparents to make an appropriate decision to adopt a companion pet.

Oh yes---they will be saving a life--the older ones don't get adopted so they get put down in many shelters. But just in case they need to designate a caregiver if the need arises. Nothing is more heart-warming that old souls growing older together!

If they are in good shape, I wouldn't go into the shelter with a pre-conceived notion on the age of a cat. They should pick which ever one...or two...that seems to connect with them.

We would be definatley adopting an older kitty for them. for some good reasons too! :)
1. Older cats are more quiet, as Annie pointed out.
2. no senior kitty would want to spend its last years couped up in a cage!
3. The cat would thank them for adopting it for the rest of its.

I don't think ability to taking care of a kitty was the question. I think she asked because some cats can live a very loooong time up to 20 years if not a bit more.
I think an older cat would be really good for both your grandparents and the cat to be adopted.

A neighbor of mine, Carmen, who is 82 years old, adopted an older cat from PetSmart yesterday afternoon. The cat is a spayed female, Siamese, beautiful, and five years old.
The new pet's name is Natasha, and I just watched the delivery of her cat tree and a very luxurious cat bed from another pet supply place, and Carmen tells me that Natasha has her own room in Carmen's townhouse.
I wonder if Carmen would adopt me?

I totally agree with adopting older kitties, I have adopted 3 of them within the last 7 years. Kinker (RIP) was 10 and Max was 8 when I adopted them, they had always lived together, and Red is anywhere from 9-12 yrs old ... he just walked in the house and decided he was home....wouldn't trade any of them for love or money.
