Volunteers say TV can help abused cats become used to being around people again.
A local animal shelter is making a rare request. They aren't just asking for food or money, but for television sets for their cats.

Rescued cats at the Animal Rescue League in Elk Grove and Galt need a lot of food and affection, but organizers say the abandoned felines need something more.

"We noticed that, one day, we came in and the cats were just all over the television," said volunteer R.J. Verni.

It does provide warmth, but volunteers say the cats were actually watching TV.

Their favorite show? "We notice with Desperate Housewives they really liked the color coordination," she said.

The ARL says TV really is a rehabilitation tool, helping the often abused or neglected animals get used to being around people again.

"When people at home watch television, you're relaxed," said Pamela Pittenger. "Your animals come, they want to be with you. I think that just all works really well together."

The organization only had one set to hold the cats' attention until last week, when they put out a call for donations.

"People have been calling, wanting to donate their TVs, now we have seven TVs," Verni said. "Every room has TV and the cats are loving it."

But even more TVs are needed. There are more than 100 cats at the Animal Rescue League.

The non-profit is also asking for donations, cat food, towels and volunteers to help care for the abused animals.

  2. This was on the local CA news last night. They have already received , I believe 8 TVs. It was really cute seeing the kitties watching TV, mostly bird videos. But, they want more TVs , so all kitties can have a front row seat!
How thoughtful of this shelter to think of stimulatiing the kitties in addition to providing food and shelter.

  4. ok first off...im sorry but i DO have to laugh at the mental image and first impression thought of this. but, i also think it's wonderful that they can put them to good use to help the sweet darling preciouses heal. and they say the idiot box is bad for you! soem time back we decided we'd help our local shelter. due to everything that has gone on, we havnt had time to actually do it, but one of these days we are going to. we got a family membership to ours. mum said to me, u can't hog all the cats to urself. (darn.) at least she'll know where i am if she needs me for sumthing hahaha!

  6. Hahaha. I've been leaving tvs on for yrs. whenever I step out. It is a great stimulator for the skittish & it has helped several of my ferals. Winnie enjoyed the Ballerina (her name slips my mind) that was on Dave Letterman's show last night. And my Binky loves the animal shows on Saturdays. :)

  7. My sister's kitties watch TV. We were leaving the house once and she said "No don't turn the TV off, the cats watch it while I'm gone." Sure enough they got at the end of the bed and started watching the TV.

  9. I live near Elk Grove. I wish I had a spare TV, but I only have the 1. Maybe I should leave mine on while I'm gone so Chuck won't be so terrified when new people come over

  11. I only have one. I gave my old TV to my niece back last year. I know that one time I was watching Animal Planet's Cat 101 and Sylvester watched the whole one hour show. He was just meserized by the other cats. From time to time I catch him watching the TV but that is only when he is sitting on the blanket that is on my couch (he only sits there during the wintertime so far).
