orphaned kittens - constipation??

(3 posts)
  1. My husband and I have recently taken on caring for 4 orphaned kittens. This is our 6th day of caring for them and we are worried because they have only pooped once and only because the vet had us put them in a sitz bath. They have flourished tremendously - when they arrived they were very small, thin and helpless - now they are playfull little fur balls. We bottled fed them every 3-4 hours and they took to that well - they are peeing with stimulation just fine and are happy and content - I am just so worried that we could cause a problem - just how often should they be going?

p.s. - the day we took them on we ran them to the vets - they thought they might be close to 2 weeks old but as the days passed and they ate (and ate) we discovered that they may be closer to 4 weeks old now - every day is an amazing growth spurt - they have teeth, are walking and playing

  2. Welcome to the best kitten/cat site in the world.

Sunday's are very slow here. You will probably get more responses on Monday.

Kittens don't poop every day. Every two or three days is more normal. Since you are stimulating them to pee, you obviously know how to do it. If the sitz bath helped before, it won't hurt to try it again. There's a ton of info if you go back into the archives here. Click on the tags I've added in the upper right hand corner. "Poop" has lots of info about hand raising kittens.

You might want to call the vet in the morning if none of the babies have pooped and ask what you should watch for. He should be able to tell you some signs of distress that mean 'bring baby in right now'.

  3. Thanks so much for your response. I posted my question before reading the others.....I see that I'm not alone :) That makes me feel a little more confident - I'm off for their 10 o'clock feeding - thanks again for your advice
