What unusual things do your cats like to eat?

  1. Today I came home from the grocery store and got distracted before putting everything away. When I came back to the kitchen I found my kitty Sofie munching on a red ripe roma tomato, firmly held between her front paws. It was so darn cute, but I was not sure about the tomato so I took it away. She then protested and got up to grab another one from the grocery bag!
I saved the one she was eating in the fridge for now, because I didn't want her to eat so much of it at once. I must be overprotective, but does anyone know whether Tomato is safe for cats? And if your cats like to eat something unusual, please share for fun.

  2. One of my cats craves bacon. Whenever I cook any he begs and begs. Once in a rare while I let him have the tiniest tidbid of only the meaty part that is well done.

One cat from my childhood loved to steal and eat the little egg cakes that were for our canary. He'd get into a package and decimate it if we forgot and left it out where he could get at it. He also liked dry Cherrios.

Another cat from my childhood loved spice cake. The minute Mom got out the spices to bake a cake, the cat begged and danced until the cake was out of the oven and cooled enough for her to have a small sample.

  3. Our last cat loved whole baby mushrooms that came from a can. They had been in brine but he would just snap one up if it fell on the floor. Our dog also loved the mushrooms as well as pickled onions, bananas, apples and pears and grapes straight off the vine. The same dog adores cinnamon candy. We found out about these likes by accident through something being dropped.

  5. I was making mushy peas to go along with my fish fry last week and Atticus went nuts when I opened up the can of peas. I gave him one...he gobbled it up, so I gave him a few more. He ate them up like it was tuna! He also loves bread...any kind...just plain bits of bread. And all 4 of the cats love kale...I give it to them every day and they all crunch on it together...very cute.

  6. My Binky goes bonkers over powdered donuts. I don't blame him, I love them too.

  7. MacKenzie loves fresh baby spinach leaves, fresh baby lettuce leaves, and tiny shreds of fresh carrot; when he was young, our vet said it would not hurt him to 'snack' on fresh vegies, and he's been fond of them ever since; the minute I get any of them out of the 'fridge, he's right there begging for a little treat.

And, he also likes to track any fresh eggs I get out of the 'fridge, too.

This stems from an experience he had as a kitten when I had a fresh egg on the counter and was distracted by I don't remember what now, but, when I came back he was just spinning the egg off the counter and on to the floor before I could stop him - he jumped down to the floor to follow the egg and was fascinated with the little mess he had just created! I scooped him up just as he was pawing the cracked eggshell and sniffing raw contents - that was over ten years ago and he still 'lurks' every time I get eggs out of the 'fridge ;-)

  8. I made pierogies tonight with our fish. My husband and I both like a little sour cream on ours. I didn't put the sour cream away before I took daughter for pictures, and when I came home Deuter had his head in the container! There wasn't much left in the container, so he had to stick his whole head in the container! We know he loves yogurt, ice cream, and ice cubes--now we can add sour cream!

  9. Deuter loves his dairy ;-)

Posted 2 years ago by kittymom #

  10. Yes he does--he just doesn't like milk of any kind. Weird isn't he!

  11. raw eggs, chicken broth, and any meat that is bloody (hey they ARE carnivores so i guess not that strange lol!). A few of them especially love chicken hearts.

  12. SM, no he's just a CAT - and that's why we love them ;-)

    FF50, yes, and that's what I keep trying to tell Mac - he's a carnivore NOT a vegitarian!!! ;-)

  14. When my Indi was teeny tiny kitten I had eaten a bowl of spinach pasta (I can't think of the name right now, they are round and filled with cheese, but not ravioli). Anyway... she stuck her head in the bowl and started chowing down on one. That darn thing was as big as she was! My little Italian kitty!

  15. Cannelloni? Yum.... My partner was having a nap yesterday when he was woken by a repeated rustling/chewing noise. I'd come back from a friend's house with some of her fantastic sourdough bread wrapped in a plastic bag, and left it in my open overnight bag. miso had chewed through the plastic and was on her second good mouthful of the bread. Never seen that with a kitty....the bread smelt good and strong, obviously miso has gourmet tastes, as it takes a week to make sd bread properly. I checked carefully for plastic, but I don't think she swallowed more than a morsel, but I'm watching her every movement.....

  16. Whenever I tear up and throw bread out for the birds Shadz absolutely MUST race out onto the lawn and taste test the bread. Just checking it's ok for the birds I guess.

  17. The round pasta filled with cheese could be tortellini.

MS, hey there snuck online while I could.

  18. Hermes isn't into people food much, he's a kitty of simple tastes, but Tansey... she's an omnivore!

She likes banana bread, cookies, peas, lo mein noodles, rice, chicken broth, lunch meat, mushrooms, cheese, spinach souffle, leftover cereal bowl milk, oatmeal, and almost all meats.

  19. So I noticed, LOL at sneaky Deb.
Shadz is a cheese fiend, she can hear the block of cheese being taken out of the fridge from the other end of the house. She then stands up on her back feet with her front feet resting on the cupboard handles and stares until you give her a wee sliver of cheese. As you bend to put in in her mouth she gently takes your hand with one paw and pulls it closer.

  20. we don't give either Abby or Cuddles "people" food - Abby wouldn't try it if we did (she's a kibble addict) and Cuddles would, but has a very sensitive stomach, so she'd puke it up...... Cuddles eat baby food meat, but that's about all she can digest!....

.... our first two cats when we were married (RIP), big Buc and Winston ate almost everything - from spagetti, to brocclli, to olives..... anything we ate, they had to try!..

... I do know that avacado is posionous to most animals, so I wouldn't feed that to a cat...... but most green vegetables and pure (un salted or spiced) meats should be fine - my Son is a nutrition expert for his animals and makes his own food out of raw meats, veggies and fruits.... and he does give whole grain breads as treats......

  21. Wow, lucky pets to have their own personal chef! Bet they're super healthy animals too! Raw is the best, for kitties anyway, as long as you know how to balance all the nutrients they should get with it.

  22. If I go to get some milk, Luna will eat the dry Cheerios right out of my bowl. I tried to tell her she's a carnivore, but at least she's eating healthy.

  23. My Bombalurina loved popcorn. If she knew that we had it she would just go nuts and pester us until we gave her a piece. I always made certain to give her just the puffy white part with no kernel on it. She was such a silly, precious little girl.

  24. Little Dot love's whipped cream...I give her tartar control treats to go with to keep her tooties (teeth) clean! Cats from my past would eat smashed green grapes, smashed cantaloupe melon, smashed asparagus w/juice...Crockey on the other hand(paw) just eats cat food!

  25. Feeny is not really a fan of anything but cat food.

    Taco on the other hand...

Taco likes ALL this. We have to always hide all our food and never leave anything out!

  26. Wow, so interesting to know what other kitties would eat. I've had a cat who loved anything dairy (whipped cream and cheese etc.) but I have never had one who likes vegetable!
I found out as long as it is not green, or stem/leaf part of tomato it is harmless for cats. (green part of tomato contains alkaloid which is poisonous)
It didn't seem to upset her stomach overnight, so I let Sofie nibble a little bit of that tomato this morning. Boy, she just LOVES it, and it is so cute to watch her munch.

  27. Ah, yes, it was tortellini! My brain cells are dead!

  28. My Ruggles will eat the corners of old books (10+ years, bless the little gourmet!) and anything else. He is a trash eater. If it is on the floor, it's on the menu.

  29. It's probably not that unusual but both my kitties love butter!!! Plus they both like the little pieces of "everything" bagel w/cream cheese that hubby gives them in the mornings.

  30. I actually believe tomatoes are really bad for kitties. I'll look it up.
