Go Vicki! Good music is soooo important. I have one CD (don't laugh, it's Duran Duran's "Rio") that I take to the gym and for me it's the perfect workout music. It's fast when I need it to be, slow when I need to catch my breath, "Hungry Like the Wolf" is perfect for doing sprints, and I never get tired of it.

A toast to a healthy Tuesday! Watching my kitcats at feed time...Dot eats responsibly/a little at a time...Crockey chows down all at once!(He was a stray so still wants every morsel!) If I was a cat I would copy Dot...everything in moderation with exercise (cat style) to go along!

LOL @ Kotek. Hi Kotek. haven't met you before. Welcome to TDK.

....sometimes it helps to write down exactly what you eat/drink during the day, to get a handle on your habits and tendencies..... maybe we could post what we eat through out the day, and if anyone has helpful suggestions, that would be great!
This morning I ate breakfast - 2 eggs poached, 2 strips of bacon and 1 piece of whole grain toast (no butter). (One of my goals is to lower my cholestrol, so I am commited to no more than once a week for eggs!......and this is the first time in almost 10 days that I've eaten an egg)....... bacon probably wasn't the best choice, but it's a little hard because we ate out..... it was turkey bacon though, and I thought that would be a better option than sausage....

There is a website, The Daily Plate (www.thedailyplate.com), that lets you (for free) enter what you eat and it will calculate calories. It also lets you enter you exercise for the day and you enter your height/weight then it figures out your calorie intake and out-go based on food in and exercise. I know several people that say the entering in all the food just helps them be more aware of what they are eating.
For the person that asked about panic attacks ... I don't know about panic attacks but regular exercise keeps me off anti-depressants.

Today I made a delicious healthier BLT sandwich. This is what it was made of:
2 pieces of weight watchers whole grain bread (100 calories, 1 gram fat)
6 pieces of butterball thin and crispy turkey bacon (100 calories, 7 grams fat) - can use less of this but I just really like the bacon, haha
2 tbsp miracle whip light - 40 calories, 3 grams fat
lettuce and tomatoes - minimal calories and fat
Overall it was super delicious and only 240 calories with less than 15% of your daily intake of fat and even less if less than 6 pieces of bacon is used. Mmmmm. I want another!

www.calorie-count.com is a website that lets you enter your own recipes and then does a nutrition analysis for you. You can also keep food logs there. I was afraid when I signed up that I would get tons of junk mail from them but so far all I get is a daily email with tips and such that I find very helpful.

Awesome everybody!
FYI Abbie - eggs are not what causes or increases cholesterol. Cholesterol is made in the liver. They are high in fat but they are also natures perfect food. I now pay a little extra for Eggland's Best eggs. They are lower in fat (so I eat more!) and are delicious and I can see the difference in the golden color and taste. If you go their website and submit a comment they will contact you and send you a coupon for a FREE dozen of eggs. They also have coupons in the paper four times a year.
Fish oil will help naturally lower cholesterol.
Disclaimer: everyone always should talk to their doctor about their own requirements and needs regarding diet, supplements and exercise!

Lainey, that's good to know, and I too buy Egglands' Best, and the fish oil is a good tip also...... I still have a bottle of some, I used to take them, don't know why I stopped...... going to get one now!......
......I like posting what we eat, and then sharing ideas, I think this will really be helpful!..... and those sites some of you mentioned above are great too!... Thanks

Good morning, Whatever Our Name Isers! I chiming in a bit late because after I got home from the gym I had to watch the Tour de France. It's a terrible time sink for me because I really enjoy watching, but at least it's only once a year!
Let's see - today I did 60 minutes on what my gym buddies and I gleefully refer to as "The Kick A - - Machine". It's a cross trainer, sort of like a cross between an elliptical and a stair stepper and definitely one of the more intense cardio machines. Today I did intervals, so two minutes at my max heart rate of 160 bpm and then two minutes letting it drop to 136 bpm. Then 40 minutes of weight lifting. Today was my upper body day for weights.
Came home and made a protein smoothie (which you all should do if you are lifting weights) with whey protein powder, a banana, 1/2 cup of blueberries and 8 oz of skim milk.
And now the real challenge of the day........ Laundry!!!! (yuck)
To help us all stay on track, here is a little motivational quote of the day!
"Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude."

I like posting food, too. I'm a wealth of knowledge about a ton of diet/health stuff... I ought to have a Ph.D. in dieting! That's not to sound or be conceited. I read a large volume of stuff and my sister's ex and his family (with some doctors and personal trainers) have given me great info, too. Now.. if I could just take my own advice!
Oatbran, oatmeal, whole grains, legumes.. all good in helping to lower cholesterol. I'll get mine tested again in September. It was slightly elevated. I want to get it below 160 (it's over 200 right now.. well, was in March).
Anymore suggestions on what to call ourselves? I'll post tomorrow morning (provided my computer is up here at work, supposed to get a new one today or tomorrow) with a group name to start a new thread.
Walked two miles in 35 minutes. We used to do it in 28 but haven't walked consistently for quite some time. Also it's getting warmer (gotta remember a t-shirt to walk in).
In health!

I really like coming up with a name that uses TDK. (mainly because that way I can actually remember it!!!)

We had some good name suggestions yesturday - pick the one you like best! Good job walking 2 miles! I'm going to try and walk this afternoon.
.... those are good suggestions for lowering cholesterol, although I have to stay away from oats because of my allergies.... but I do love legumes and whole grain breads - particularly pumpernickel and marble ryes...... I've also read that avacado is good for that, and that is one of my FAVORITE foods!.....
.... shin is still sore from being "kicked" yesturday...... and while I know a protein shake would be an excellent idea for me, the thought of bananas or strawberrys gives me the heebeejeebees..... I'll have to try and find some fruit that would make a good shake, but not taste sweet...... maybe I could stomach a lemon/lime flavor......

*snickers at the well placed kick delivered to AV*
AV, I bought some frozen fruit at the store that is a mixture of mango, papaya and strawberry. It makes a delicious smoothie! One of my gym buddies makes her protein shakes with juice and then adds tons of fresh fruit.

Let's not put the word "dieting" in our name. Because we really want to encourage each other to pick up life long good habits.
I don't know why honey dew melon wouldn't work mixed with juice. Not sure what kind of juice, though. I just do mine in milk because that way it's like a milk shake. I think that cantaloupe would work in milk - it works in ice cream!

Hi, loves! This is wonderful to know that we can all help each other get healthier. I am so proud of all of us!
My stats were really hideous this past January -- 5'1", 189 lbs, and blood pressure at 202/110, cholesterol at 300. And I was turning 61 in a few months.
Yes, the numbers are accurate.
My doctor took a very close look at that, and at me, and explained in clear and ringing tones that the party was over. She said I was a walking stroke and I needed to join Weight Watchers and a gym immediately.
Why?
Because if I didn't, I would be so-so healthy until 70 -- if I made it that far -- and then everything would avalanche. And I would die.
"And right now," she said, "you are a walking stroke. Just moving around makes you short of breath, your knees and hips are in lousy shape, and your blood pressure makes me want to hospitalize you. Right now. Any questions?"
She scared me back into life, which I had been ducking for a while.
The next week I joined Weight Watchers. In May I found a great gym, and 4 days a week I am doing Pilates, core training, weight training, and three miles/1 hour on the treadmill.
Now? I've lost 35 pounds, all my clothes have had to be taken in, and my energy level is through the roof. My BP and cholesterol meds have been cut in half, and will need to be cut again, since I am now 99/55 for BP and 188 on cholesterol.
And I found that good health is CHEAP, even with Weight Watchers and the gym.
This is the money I've saved:
Because I no longer hit Wendy's/McD's/KFC twice a week (now it's a twice a month guilty pleasure), I save $32/month. I don't live off the vending machine, so I save $22/month. And I don't load up on fat-stuff treats and ginormous cans of nuts that I tell myself will last for 14 months and I wipe them out in a weekend, I save another $25.
That all adds up.
I can pay for WW and the gym with the left-over money.
And I can live now, and move, and breathe. At any age, at any size, you can be healthier and happier, and you can do it. You can do it!
Still have 40 pounds to go, and I apologize for the long post, but I am so excited about this for all of us!
*blushes, kicking gravel*

I have a tip for someone who wants a healthy alternative to pasta.
Try spaghetti squash. It is a squash that when cooked forms spaghetti strands. It is really easy to cook (boil it or bake in the oven or even make it in 10 minutes in the microwave). It has a very plain, blank taste just like pasta does so when you put sauces and flavorings on it it takes to them very well. It is very delicious and nutritious and low calorie alternative. My mom used to make it for me when I was a kid with spaghetti sauce and Parmesan cheese.
Here is a photo of it both cooked and uncooked

That is wonderful Emma! You go girl! In fact to all who have lost weight, my hat is off to you all. I have lost and gained the same 30 lbs only to add more on when I gained it back. I actually don't know my current weight as the last time I stepped on a scale was when I was in Bed, Bath and Beyond to buy a light comforter for my bed back in December. I would say I now need to lose about 90 lbs as I usually can guess pretty close to what my weight is (off maybe by 5 or so pounds) so I think I have an idea of what I might weigh and it is considered obese by medical standards.
I was always a very athletic person but after college I became sedentary due to working stressful jobs. I would be too tired to go to the gym and so my weight went up. When I was in my thirties I was a gym rat and would go seven days a week. Later on I stopped going to the gym due to another stressful job and because I ate to comfort myself, I regained my weight back and no longer wanted to go to the gym. I would say I basically live to eat not eat to live and know that I need to change my habits. I am told I don't eat a lot but what I do eat isn't always good for me. I need to eat way more vegies and fruits and need to start making a habit of this.
I have used Weight Watchers several times in the past but haven't had the motivation to go back to them. I do belong to a gym but because it is always crowded when I would go that I gave up on going to it. There is a small gym in my apt complex with a bike, treadmill and eliptical machine that I use once in a while when in the mood to get off of my butt. My gym did open a new circuit type place near by that I might give it a try. As GD says, small steps..focus on the first 10 lbs and then go from there.

Yay, Emma!!!!! *calls and cancels flowers*
SMM, I think that it would help you a lot if you could find a work-out partner. It's amazing how motivating that is when you know that they will be waiting for you. Also, since you do have some cardio equipment at your apartment, maybe you could set a goal for yourself of going over at least three times a week (to begin with) and walking on the treadmill for 20 minutes. You will be surprised at how quickly you can progress past that 20 minutes. But start out with an obtainable goal so that you keep your motivation level high. If you can, get an MP3 player and load music that you really like and that has a tempo to keep you moving. That 20 minutes will fly by!

A partner is a big help! I got started working out with a partner and I never would have kept it up on my own. But just someone waiting for you or having to explain why you didn't go helps you keep going.
Right now I don't have a work out partner but my sister is on a get fit movement as well so we talk about our efforts and accomplisments. If I have to say I only went to gym twice this week to her I feel I need a really good reason for that. And like the sign at the door of my gym says - "Getting there is half the battle"

Hello everyone, been pretty busy today but just wanted to chime in and say HOWDY! It's great to see all the interest in our collective help, I can't think of a better group to train with. How about Truly Divine Kitties for a name? I'm not very creative with that kind of thing, but I'm sure someone will come up with a brilliant name.
Did my daily walk today, went 70 min instead of an hr. I have a great neighborhood for walking, lots of various routes, sidewalks and hills to keep it interesting. I bought a hula hoop last week because I read it's a good ab workout....it's a challenge! I was never good at is when I was a kid but I am determined to work it!!
It's great to see everyone's suggestions/websites/advice I'm learning a lot, it's great to have you all as training partners. Well I'd better get back to work, take care and have a great rest of the day!

Amd when you can't find a partner for life changes, that's when you join WW. You can go to meetings with people who are having the same problems and issues with food as you are.
At the gym, there is always someone who needs a partner as much as you do.
Just extend yourself!
