Um...DUH!!! Actually, I wonder if Ms. McComb did this study to hang around cats, hehe - in which case, atta girl!
There's so much more that could have been included in this study. For instance, most of us know (but scientists, uh, who don't have cats, have to study) that purring isn't always happy. Shaddo purred when he was sick or injured and Jiggs purred when he was frightened. Some cats purr when coming out of anesthesia, so it suggests they are seeking comfort.
Complex critters, cats are!

Leela is definately a daddy's girl. When he's away, she doesn't say much, but when he's home and speaks to her, she answers him. I can almost translate - *in innocent high pitched girly tone* "yes, daddy?" She also has complete trilling conversations with herself. Guess she hears voices too...

Teaser is our talker--no meows just chirps and a lot of chattering! She is hilarious. She has her favorite human to talk with--normally my husband when he is in his office. Her cat tree is there. It is there special Daddy/Kitteh time! Deuter's meow is awful annoying--no wonder he is so big! He has a high pitched grating voice--he is so cute and if you here him all you can think is how did that sound come out of one who is so darn cute!
Check this out, it's not the report I read several years ago but it gets the point across.
