  1. Hi guys - just thought I'd let all you caring and interested fellow TDKers know that my vet, Ruth, rang me today to ask how sumi is doing, and of course the answer is, just terrific, but also to tell me the result of her feces test showed no protozoan parasites, but did come up with a fair number of TAPE WORM eggs. This was surprising in such a young kitten, and more surprising as she had been wormed 3 times altogether. Her illness was not a result of the worm, but a reaction to the 3rd wormer. Again, the question is, why did she not react that way to the 2 previous doses, which were both at 2 week intervals before this one? Cats only have a bad reaction to a worming pill when they are infested, and Ruth said she must have been pretty infested to still be showing some eggs in the diahrrea 5 days after the pill and such a thorough cleaning out of her intestines. So, she has to have further worming of course, but Ruth says she wants to give her little system a rest, so we're waiting 10 days, when she is due her 2nd vaccination anyway. She also wants to weigh sumi, as she is now concerned to see she is gaining weight. She said it all would have happened no matter what, as sumi would not have thrived with tapeworm in her, and it would eventually have led to a blockage. So, it had to be gone through. She would have picked it up from her mother, as sumi was a rescue, found wandering alone at 5 weeks or so. But again, it is very unusual to find such a lot of tapeworm eggs in such a youngun. Anyway, at least we know - it can drag on with tapeworm, but we'll keep treating her at intervals.
Thanks again for all the well wishes and caring posts, and lovely messages via Catster too!

  2. Thanks for the update. Oh my , if the vet thinks she reacted to the worming, what a worry now that she has to be re-wormed. I wonder if there is anything that she can be given to prevent a repeat reaction.

  4. Lol, 2BP, I would have loved to hear that squeal! No, I think it'll be fine, but yes, you'd worry about the next pill and her reaction. Not sure I could go thru all that again.

  8. Good Sumi is doing so well.

As an FYI the worm meds she reacted to were probably not specific for tapeworm since this type of infestation was not expected. Not all worm meds are created equal. Different worms are more sensitive to different poisons.

The Vet will probably give her a different vermifugative.
