What is Best for Kitten

  1. Hi all, I just rescued a three-week old kitten from the heat here in Houston. All her littermates had died and her mom was nowhere to be found. I have had her for almost two weeks, so she is almost five weeks old, and she has been thriving from her originally weakened state. She has no problem tolerating KMR and has a good appetite and no diarrhea. What I am most concerned about is the amount of time I have to spend with her: I am a student with two jobs who has managed to shuffle my schedule around in order to feed her multiple times a day, but I just cannot spend as much time as I would like, and feel guilty about it all the time. Daily, we spend about an hour total on feedings and baths, and maybe one hour, two or three if we're lucky, on playing and social time. She is totally alone in the apartment for most of the day and for the long stretches of time I am not there.

Do you think I will be able to raise a well-adjusted and happy kitty with that kind of schedule, or is it better for her if I find another place for her, maybe with other kittens or someone with more time? I am totally in love with her, of course, but I would appreciate advice from someone who has raised healthy single orphans before. Thank you!

  2. If you are able, adopting another kitten would be ideal. If that is not possible, leave a radio or TV on for her when you are not there. Good luck and thanks for saving her!

  3. Ok, but if I don't have enough time for one kitten, won't I mess two up even moreso?

Also, she has some ticks or bugs hiding on her face that occasionally run and are too quick for me to catch. Any advice for how to deal with face bugs that you can't see most of the time?

  4. Could those bugs on her face be fleas? You can try a flea comb and giving her a bath, although my vet doesn't give flea medicine to kittens under 6-8 weeks, I've heard some other vets do.

No matter what bug it is, you can get this organic material called diatomaceous earth and dust it over your carpets, soft furniture and floors -- sweep it into cracks and sprinkle it over your soft things and then vacuum it up. I've gotten rid of fleas in about 3-4 days by doing this twice a day, without having to use any chemicals. You can order it online or get it at health food stores and some pet stores and vets. Basically, it's made out of fossils and dries up bugs!

I found a kitten last March and had to leave her alone for about 8-10 hours a day after she was about 6 weeks old. She turned out a little needy but a very sweet and happy cat!
