  1. Should I have done this? We went to the vet today and got her kitten booster shots and they gave her a wormer pill when we were there so I think that is why she is passing the worm...It was quite long about 2 1/2 inches and it was definitely moving so I didn't want her licking it and getting it again....I am worried...will it hurt her if I pulled it out?....Sorry it's gross but you cat lovers know what extremes you will go to when you love your pets...help!!

  2. Hi TAL, I just added a tag on worms. In the pink on the top right of the page. See if that helps you. I would say it was good to remove the worm from where Lilith could have ingested it again. be careful though because some worms are sectional and you may not pick it all up. Yes it probably is the worming done at the vets starting to take effect. We know exactly the extremes we go to for our wonderful kitties so don't worry about gross.

  4. If you haven't already disposed of the evidence, put it into a ziplocked baggie and take it to the vet. He'll be able to tell if that's the kind of worm (there are several) he was trying to get rid of. He may want to try a different medicine or another dose of whatever he already gave her.

    Pulling out a worm isn't likely to hurt her because the worm will break if it gets pulled too taut. Pulling on a string that is coming out of either end could cause a lot of damage. You don't know how long a string might be and it can slice through a cat's intestines because it won't break.

    Poor little Lily - she probably had no idea what mommy was doing back there making 'yukky' noises.

  5. TAL, we would all probably do the same thing you did, no worries. I agree with CBM, too - good advice. Poor Lilith, yukky thing to have been in her little tummy! {{{purrs, headbonks and a gentle scritch, Lilith}}}

  6. Was it a long, white, spaghetti like looking worm? If so it was a roundworm and most broad spectrum dewormers treat for roundworm. If you remember the name of the pill I may be able to tell you whether it treats roundworm. They are very commom and the reason you are seeing them now is that they live in the intestinal tract until they die (or begin to die as it sounds like the one you found was still alive n kickin!), and then are shed in the feces. So dont be surprised if you see more of these over the next few days and if they have a more severe infestation it is also not uncommon for them to vomit a few worms after the dewormer as well. Also it would be a really good idea to do a fecal exam in about 2 weeks to make sure that the roundworms are gone, or just retreat her with another dewormer pill.

    PS it will not hurt her to pull a worm out, the worm would probably break before it would do any damage to her rectum.

  8. The worm was more pinkish brown, almost like a earthworm but it was for sure not a earthworm...She is dong a lot better today...She was a little lethargic after her round of boosters yesterday....The vet said that would be normal...and she wasnt eating so I was of course getting a little bit nervous but I woke up this morning and he was hungry and playing like her usual self...The pill they gave her was called Drontal
