Carpet Cleaning and Cats

  1. I think I read a long time ago about carpet cleaning chemicals being bad for their paws. I have some stains in my carpet (dark brown or black on a beige carpet). Is there anything I need to be aware of? Anything specific I should use or not use?

Also, I don't want to buy a full size steam cleaner and have been looking at the Spot Bot. Anyone use it? What do you think?

  2. You might try renting a steam cleaner. Do you know what made the stains? That will help in figuring out what to use to clean it.

Make sure you read the label of whatever you use. If it has a caution about letting children play on it, it's probably not safe for pets. If you have to use something really strong to get the stains out, you would probably want to vacuum it thoroughly afterward then use a second 'safe-for-pets' cleaner on the same spot.

I have had pretty good luck with a rug cleaner called Foley. I get it at Home Depot, but I'm sure it's available other places. There are a lot of other things you could also try (white vinegar cleans a lot of things). Obviously, if you are going to experiment you will to do so in a corner or under a piece of furniture.

  3. ACcording to the carpet installers the primary cleaning agent to try is just plain water in a steam cleaner. I have the little green machine from Bissell and love that for spot cleaning. I do have 2 different carpet cleaning solutions I use on tough spots one is a "green" product from Rug Doctor and the other is one of those oxygenated cleaners that the carpet installers gave me. both work well.

  4. I am not sure if you have natural carpet cleaning companies where you are, but I used Citrus Co. for carpeting cleaning and they clean with orange oil and it is non toxic and safe for pets.

  6. I have a bissel steam cleaner and steam clean my rugs at least twice a month. I have wicked allergies and it helps. I use a pet solution cleaner. My cleaner heats the water and it dries fairly fast, so I just keep them off the carpet until it is dry.
