  1. Hello,
I just posted before about adoping 1 or 2 kittens. Well thanks to your advice i am adopting 2. They are litter mates and best friends! Zoe and Charlie come home with us next week. Any tips about brining them home? I have no other pets other then them.

I have been told a safe room is not necessary since I am adopting them in pairs. So once I show them where the litter is (I hear phyiscally put them in the litter), can I just let them run lose?

Any other tips about helping the transition would be great!

  2. ILT, concats on deciding to get two kitties! As much as possible you'll want to try to keep them away from electric cords; little ones have a fascination with them for some reason. Also, for just the first few days you might want to keep them confined to a bedroom when you're not home, just til they get used to your house; that way you don't have to worry about one or both of them trying to bolt out the door when you come home; some little ones try to get outside, and some aren't interested in trying to get outside, so you'll just have to wait and see what your new babies will do.... Of course, you'll want to have at least one litter box, kitten size at first (two is better if you have the room); kitty litter, food and water dishes, kitten food, a scratching post is a good idea, too, so you can try to start them early with learning the post is for scratching ~ and not the furniture!
Oh, and some feather wand toys are fun for the little ones, too ;-)

Keep bumping this thread, and I'm sure you'll get a lot more suggestions about welcoming your new little ones home!

  3. you'll want to keep the food and water dishes away from the litter box as mush as possible. opposite corners of a room is good. kitties don't like peeing next to their eating dishes...

  4. Is there any other kitten proofing thing i need to worry about? Do kittens learn to get into kitchen cabinets and such? Also in terms of the scratching what do I do when they start going at my couch. I have heard a firm "NO" and then move them to the scartching post. I have also heard just move them to the scartching post because you don't want them to associate it with a negative thing?

P.S. thanks for all your help!

  5. You might try getting a spray bottle and filling it with water; then just give them a little squirt if they start to 'sharpen' their little claws where you don't want them to... then put the bottle down before you try to approach them, so they don't think they'll get squirted again; then you can gently pick them up and take them to the scratching post; if it turns out that you do have a scratching problem - there are some other, more extreme measures you can try to keep the kitties from scratching the furniture. If it turns out you need suggestions for that, you can start a new thread later....
