  1. Good morning friend!

    I got busy at work yesterday (darn job!) and then left early to be with my family and didn't get back online last night. Wanted to thank everyone for their beautiful words and thoughts regarding tha first anniversary of losing my mom. Meant a lot to me, and to all the others who posted about their moms. What a loving family we have here! {{{TDK}}}

I did well yesterday. Didn't get any exercise in but will today. Not sure what I will do, depends on the weather. Also my dvd player died so I need to switch out the one from my bedroom (no room in that room to do my exercise video).

As soon as I get more organized I will probably commit my food on here. it helps me stay accountable.

I got some more "catch up" sleep last night and am feeling pretty good today.

My reminder/thought for the day: I am not my body.

    Have a great day friends!

  2. Good morning, Lainey!

I got up at 5:15 and got to the gym just before 6, only to find that they've moved opening time from 6 to 5:30. So, do I try to be there when they open (which would mean getting up around 4:30/4:45 and messing up George's feeding schedule), or is 6 good enough? Is anything ever good enough? (sorry, just feeling frustrated with work, exercise, healthy eating, penny-pinching and the 9,000,000,000 other things I'm supposed to think about every minute of every day).

  3. Good Morning all! I am "restarting" fresh today in light of my current health condition. It gets a bit daunting and I want to throw in the towel! I know it is about ME and MY HEALTH so I have to do it! Eventually if I keep it up it will be a LIFESTYLE not a pain in my butt. Lainey I use this one: "Food is not alive, it cannot CONTROL me or MAKE me eat it!" Made it up myself but sometimes when that donut is staring me down I have to repeat that!

  4. Kilroy you crack me up! Nine billion things to think about? I thought I had it bad with eight billion! And I know what you mean about what is good enough. Last year I was exercising 3-4 times a day and was getting so insane about it that honey made me stop for a while and of course, getting back was verry difficult.

MC - I'm so glad to see what a great attitude you have! And I like that saying of yours and it makes sense! Reminds me of the refrigerator saying...something about it isn't going to hug me or love me, it just stores food (fuel). or something along those lines!

    Here's to a good day!

  5. .... morning fitness friends!..... we leave Sun. to go up to NC, which for me is absolute heaven!..... I relax, and unwind - I forget my 9 billion issues for a time!..... It's truly my thearpy retreat!.... I will be just Hubbs and I (a mini honeymoon), and he has suggested we do a "body cleanse" while we're there.... it entails taking special liver and colon cleanse suplements, and a "strict cleansing" diet, that ends in a one day fast!....... he's done it several times, over the past 10 yrs. and swears it makes him feel so much better and energized!.... they also have a wonderful fitness class their every morning, I can just walk out my door and be at the gym in 5 minutes...... so, that's my plan for the next week..... I'll post how I'm doing!.......

  6. I just woke up, so I'm sipping on some green tea. Yesterday, I tried to make my own fried mozzarella sticks; it kinda didn't work. In the recipe I have, after the cheese is dusted with flour, dipped in beaten egg, and dredged with bread crumbs, you have to freeze the sticks for fifteen minutes (presumably to let the coating set properly to avoid the cheese oozing from the breading; I didn't do that, so I wound up with bits of crust, globs of cheese, and a few sticks that somewhat resembled mozzarella sticks from a restaurant.

  8. oh and vicki cheese .........................your killing me here ...I WANT CHEEESE

Posted 2 years ago by jinxedfairy #

  9. I like what you said, MC! That is true!

Posted 2 years ago by katthays #

  10. JF hang in there! it's not always on the scale that you will see it first. How are your clothes fitting? Don't forget you are doing wonders for your blood pressure, your heart, your muscles, etc. It's about overall health, too! and cheese is EVIL! LOL (i LOVE cheese!)

Posted 2 years ago by Jetta and Boo Boo's Mom #

  11. JF, try starting the morning with 1/2 cup cottage cheese, 1/4 tsp cinnamon, and a drop of vanilla all mixed together. It is so good! Then, drink a full 8 oz of water, and go for the walk, with a bottle of water in your hand.

Betcha the scales drop the very next day.

I do this every morning, and it has really helped my weight, health, and life.

  12. Good point, Emma. JF do you eat something about 1/2 hour before exercise. You wouldn't try to drive your car on an empty tank, now would you? We need to fuel our bodies, even an apple and some peanut butter or some almonds, or something like Emma suggested.

  13. I just harvested my first squash of the season, so I steamed him with a few fresh herbs (thyme, tarragon, basil). Tarragon and summer squash don't really go together unless all you want to taste is the tarragon; the other herbs are fine with summer squash.

  14. MC & Lainey, I have to tell myself that the food won't make the problems go away. A cookie does not make it all better - despite what Mom said. And definitely not 2 - "one for each hand". I grew up in a family where if something bad happened we cooked and ate, if something good happened we celebrated, by cooking and baking and eating.

That is a mindset that I still have to fight, food is not the way to solve all my problems or celebrate all my successes.

  15. I really wasn't trying to be funny, Lainey, but I guess it's a good thing if I made you laugh (?) I'm feeling genuinely frustrated and overwhelmed; that's why I said it feels like there are 9 billion things I'm supposed to be thinking about every minute.

Posted 2 years ago by Kilroy #

  16. Oh I hope i didn't offend you, Kilroy! That wasn't my intent! I'm sorry you are feeling so overwhelmed and frustrated. I know when that happens to me I shut down down completely and cannot "do" anything. What are some strategies you could adopt to help you deal with all your stuff? What can you control? (I'm talking to me here, too!) One thing I do is something visual/active that works for me. I literally pull my hands up and back and say "hands off!" meaning, for me, that that issue, situation, is not in my control and and I cannot use my valuable energy trying to do so. Now, of course, the things you mentioned in your first post, those are some serious things that you are dealing wtih. Taking care of yourself, worrying about the budget (all things I can definitely relate to), etc., those ARE serious and important matters. I don't know if what I'm saying makes sense or not and again, I am sorry if I offended or upset you. Are you a list maker? I like to use lists and cross things off as that gives me a sense of accomplishment and helps me feel more in control of things. Just an idea.

  17. JF, a big lesson that I have had to learn is to not skip meals. I used to be a terrible meal skipper (especially breakfast) and eating regularly throughout the day has made a huge difference.

I had a group meeting with my wellness class last night. Our discussion was very interesting - the topic was staying motivated. Our leader (a doctor who specializes in behavior) said that a complete change in behavior usually takes between 12-18 months. Most people don't give themselves that amount of time - if they have difficulties, or "fall off the wagon", they just tend to give up and think that they can never do it. She said that we must remember that behavior is built up over a number of years, and so we shouldn't expect to just be able to change our behavior overnight.

  18. It's OK, Lainey. Sorry I got grumpy at you, I usually swallow those sorts of responses before they get out :)

I do make lists, mostly because my head is like a sieve. They definitely help.

JF, I second NNGM about not skipping meals; that will make your body think you're starving and it will hold on to every calorie you put into it. It's weird to think we have to eat in order to lose, but it's true.

Posted 2 years ago by Kilroy #

  19. Smile... it's okay, too, Kilroy! You weren't grumpy and you have every right to express yourself! I just feel badly that I offended you and didn't see the "seriousness" of your post..I took it tongue-in-cheek. Please let me know if there is anything I can help with! Contrary to popular opinion (honey and my dad) I can keep my mouth shut and just listen! LaineyLives at aol dot com.

  20. Kudos Kilroy on a 6 A.M. work out...Wow, I close my evening with my work outs...I'd be pooped by Noon if I worked out in the morning! T.G.I.F. to all for a healthy-lifestyle weekend!

  21. JeanKit, I used to workout in the evening and I found with the switch to mornings I had more energy all day. If I don't work out at 5:30am, I have a harder time getting through the 7 to 10pm class. The day after the 7 to 10 class I make my 1 day a week off, I can't get home at 11 and be up at 5am. But that works for me because class is only one day a week.

Posted 2 years ago by TrufflesMom #

  22. Jean, I try to work out in the morning for a couple of reasons: it gets it out of the way, and I'm less likely to get sabotaged by "life", you know, all the stuff that comes along in the course of the day. There is a class at my gym on Monday nights that I want to try (Cardio Kickboxing, whoo hoo!), so I may try mixing things up a bit, timewise. Of course, that will cut into the best part of my day (home, cat, husband), but it's only one night a week, right?

  23. About the cooking-baking-eating dance that we do to bond and heal with ourselves or our families, the one unmentioned fact that remains is the MAJOR joy is being with those people we love AFTER all the work.

Over the coffee and food at the table.

    In conversation.

Sharing ideas, memories, and the small joys of life.

So, instead of cooking-baking-eating hi cal stuff, spend the time chopping fruit, making low-fat, low-cost, low-cal and high flavor chicken veggie soup, and throw a few pitas in the oven to crisp.

You still do the work (cooking/chopping/pouring), and the food is healthier.

And you and the people you love will live longer to continue the wonderful conversations!

    This is about life!

  24. Hi, I've been reading this thread for a while. It's great that everyone is here to encourage each other. Emma, I really love it that you are so positive. As for myself, I'm at a good weight and very physically active (aerobics twice a week, biking and walking the other days). I lost about 40 lbs. 2 years ago and have kept it off. Everyone wants to know my secret. The truth is that it is not easy, but it is easier because I choose to keep healthy food in the house and love the exercise that I do. I enjoy my increased energy, improved health and appearance, and my beautiful wardrobe. Nevertheless, I do have dieting temptations and backslide, which is really normal, as many others have pointed out. So, anyway, I just wanted to tell all of you that it helps me to read all the great things you all have to say. The kindness and encouragement here is great!!!

  26. Morning (late morning) all. I was doing pretty well yesterday. Ate well all day, had my one-hour with trainer (whew ! she's tough!). Then it didn't go so well. I had agreed to help man-friend teach his roommate a particular dance step in exchange for dinner. I should have known ! Dinner was fast-food. I did the best I could and had an Arby's roast beef sandwich. No fries. But no vegies either! Did my best to 'work off' some of the sandwich by going dancing for about an hour.

Today is a new day, and I have control over my own dinner. Man friend asked if I wanted to go out - but knowing that meant Arby's or In 'n Out some other fast food - I declined. I think this explains why he is not losing the 'gut' he wants to lose. Hmmmmm....

  27. 2P, you could tell him you'd like to go out tonight as long as you can pick the restaurant!

I have to buckle down on my Weight Watcher regimen. I weighed in yesterday and I've gained back nearly five pounds in the last six weeks. Yikes! Too much fast food and too many desserts. Time to get with the program again. :)

Posted 2 years ago by Kitten Whisperer #

  28. Sounds to me like you did really well, 2p.

I just had another one of those "aha" moments that is probably a "duh, no kidding" to most people. We all have to figure out what works best *for us*. GD likes drinking green tea, but I just tried it and said "yuk!". OK, so no green tea for me. Jean works out at night because it works for her, while some of us find mornings are best. Each one of us is going to have a different combination of things that work, we just have to keep doing them once we figure them out.

Like I said, kind of obvious, but I think it's going to help me shut out some of the "noise" ("do this!" "eat that!" "don't do this!") that drives me nuts and makes me want to throw in the towel.

Posted 2 years ago by Kilroy #

  29. Amen Kilroy! There is no cookie cutter (parden the cookie reference!) way to take care of ourselves. It's better to find and do what works for you then think "I have to do it this way cuz so and so said it's the best/right way" and not do anything at all! You indeed have found the secret!

Posted 2 years ago by Jetta and Boo Boo's Mom #

  30. KW - I would have gone that route, but he is currently on work furlough - no work = no money but yet doesn't have paperwork necessary to get unemployement. I felt I was doing each of us a favor. His roommate is diabetic and cooks every night... and healthy foods ! I have suggested he eat at home.... it was a suggestion not taken. His choice.

Kilroy - you are exactly right. You need to do what works best for you. We are offering suggestions of what works for us...and sometimes I do get some good ideas there. I'll try it and see if it works for me. I know for myself, I can get into a routine and not be able to see outside the box I've put myself in.
