How do you figure out your target heart rate zone for exercise? I got one range of numbers (ridiculously low) from the trainer at the gym and have gotten different results from various calculators on the Web. Talk about confusing :P So I figured I'd ask the experts I trust - you guys!

Kilroy, go to http://exercise.about.com/cs/fitnesstools/lbl_THR.htm
Hope this works! You need to figure in your age, then do the calculations, and I have always been told to get your heartrate up to your zone and hold it there for 30 minutes. I work out DAILY and have for years on end, but I have to admit, I don't monitor my heart rate!

Kilroy, here's a site with a good explanation.

BUT, you have to factor in your fitness level. For example, by following the formula my target heart rate should be 136 bpm. That's hardly a warm-up for me. So it really depends on how conditioned you are and how athletic you are. I usually work close to my maximum heart rate, which is around 160.

Just seeing this. Yep, depends on your fitness level. And I don't trust the monitors on the machines in the gym. I have Polar heart rate monitor that I wear around my chest, and the watch that goes with it.
My trainer gave me different zones for each of the machines... treadmill, elyptical and bike. The body responds differently to each type of cardio exercise.
My suggestion would be to find an intelligent trainer (they aren't all great - the ones at the gym, well, many of them, aren't as educated or focued as they should be) -
I wear a Polar heart monitor, too. And don't get the one that is just a watch that you put your fingers on to read your pulse because they are totally inaccurate. Get the one with the chest strap. I honestly couldn't work out without my heart monitor.
The heart monitors on the cardio machines are really not accurate at all.
