I have a 4-5wk old kitten that I rescued on the 4th of July and have been raising. She has been doing great, but I went to atlanta for a week and I think she forget who I was a little. She seems afraid of my hands and tries to pounce at me and she doesnt like for me to hold her. Is it possible for a kitten to forget their owner in 5 days? Am I overreacting? Also she has been playing really rough and I figure it is just her being a kitten but how to I teach her acceptable "social skills"?

Kitten behavior problems

Welcome to TDK. Who was taking care of her while you were gone? Was she handled on a daily basis or left alone? The younger the kitten and more interaction with humans the more likely she will take to people. With some cats they just are loners, and it doesn't matter what you do--they will not be lap kitties. Give her time and attention. Do not let her bite and scratch you. Get a toy or two and she can chase and play rough with that--just not people. Reward positive behavior. You will get more advice I am certain. Enjoy your kitten.

Welcome to TDK, Brit! Try distracting her with some soft toys when she tries to bite; also using a feather wand toy (feathers on the end of a cord attached to a pole so you can swing it around) will keep your hands out of range from claws and little kitten teeth; just remember she's going to be teething, so biting is going to be 'normal' for a while. Is that her pic in your avatar? What is her name?
I am a meowma to two kitties; you can find out about them by clicking on my avatar ;-)

Welcome! OMG, I just adore your baby, and that name...it is to die for.
I agree with the above. Also in 5 days , at this age, a lot has happened developmentally, that is part of the reason for the change.
She may also be training you not to leave her again. LOLPosted 2 years ago by Tigerlilly #

I have just found lots of patience and redirecting (much like our human children!) helps loads when sweet kitty babies start teething and testing the boundries. My Callie is 5 weeks old and I too hand-reared her. She always thought of me as Mama, but in the past few days the developmental changes have popped up and she is using me as a scratching post, teething ring, and see's my nose a batting practice. I have just been gently telling her to be soft and redirecting like PPs have said to other fun things and appropriate outlets for these new skills she is developing.
Good luck, I find kittens from around 4 weeks to about...um....middle adulthood (lol, maybe more like 3 or 4 months) are like toddlers and just need some extra help learning what is appropriate and expected from thier humans.
