  2. Hi Mandy,
Thank you for your post. My heart goes out to you and your husband for the loss of your little Oliver.
Similar to your story, my boyfriend and I adopted a 12-week-old kitten from a local rescue just 9 days ago. We named him Maneki Neko (Japanese for "Beckoning Cat"). Like Oliver, he was playful and normal for the first week. Just yesterday afternoon Maneki stopped playing and only slept. He will not eat or drink. I took him to see the vet this morning. His temperature was 105.7. Maneki was tested for FeLV/FIV, which came back negative. He was given fluids and the antibiotic Clavamox. It looks as though they doused his back with rubbing alcohol as well, I suppose to help bring his temperature down. His heart and lungs were fine.
Maneki has done nothing but sleep all day. He does not want to eat or drink, although the vet suggested I encourage him. I offered him some Fancy Feast tuna with gravy. Three days ago he devoured it. After reading your story and the responses, I am extremely worried. Maneki's little head is hot when I touch it. So I used the syringe the vet gave me to force him to drink some water. If he is still feverish and lethargic tomorrow, I'm taking him back into the pet hospital.
I don't know if I can handle another tragedy. I just recently lost a 5-year-old female Calico named Pixel. I've had her since she was a kitten. I recently moved from Southern California to Northern California and Pixel was right there with me in the U-Haul truck, sedated by the way, for the 7-hr. drive. She had a known heart murmur, but has always been healthy. I took a vacation the end of June back East to visit my new grandson. My boyfriend planned to join me shortly after; so he was responsible for transporting Pixel to the local Kitty Hotel for a 1-week stay. No sooner did my boyfriend get on a plane that I was contacted by the Kitty Hotel, informing me that Pixel was panting and vomiting and was being transported to the local pet hospital where she suffered a heart attack and died. Needless to say, I was devastated.
So upon returning from my trip and taking care of the cremation services, etc., I immediately found and adopted Maneki.
I would appreciate any advice anyone can give me for the best treatment for my poor sick and feverish little Maneki.
    Thank you.

  3. I'm so sorry to hear about little Maneki, and very glad that he's under a vet's care, since a fever is not good. All I can suggest is that you keep a very close eye on him and rush him back to the vet if his condition seems to worsen instead of improving. You need to give him a little time for the meds to kick in but if he's not getting better, the vet is the best option. Wish I could help more. Nutrical, a high calorie paste from a pet store, and pedialyte, from the infants aisle in supermarkets, will help to keep him going if he's refusing to eat and drink, or you can make your own pedialyte (it's preferable to water as it also includes rehydration salts) from this thread and a little Karo syrup smeared on his mouth (no big lumps, nothing he could choke on) will give him a wee burst of energy : http://www.dailykitten.com/chat/topic/31106

  4. Thank you JCat. I will prepare the homemade pedialyte in the morning for Maneki. And if he's still not eating, will pursue purchasing Nutrical from the pet store. :)
