  1. How do you fix an avocado? I just bought an avocado from the grocery store, and I have no idea what to do with it. It's still green and firm. Any suggestions?

  2. Let it ripen a little more. It will turn darker and become soft. One of my favorite things to do with an avacado is make and SAT. Swiss, turkey, and avacado sandwich or salad. Did you get it for something inparticular? You know you will get more recipe ideas!

  3. Here is an easy guacamole recipe:

    Ingredients:
    2 avocados
    1/2 lemon, juiced
2 tablespoons chopped onion 1/2 teaspoon salt
    2 tablespoons olive oil

    Directions:
    1. Cut the avocados into halves. Remove the seeds, and scoop out the pulp into a small bowl. Use a fork to mash the avocado. Stir in lemon juice, onion, salt, and olive oil. Cover the bowl, and refrigerate for 1 hour before serving.

  4. I wanted to try it to see how it was plain before I decided to use it for guacamole or another avocado recipe.

  5. Wait for it to darken to almost a black color and soften. Then skin, pit, and devour! I like avacados. I love it on salads and sandwiches. You can also grow the pit. I remember my Mom always did that when I was a kid.

  6. If you like a little bit of a zip you can squirt a little bit of lemon juice on the slices...

  7. It will ripen pretty fast if you put it in a drawer.

  8. ... the best way to quicken the ripening is to put it in a brown paper bag, in the window sill.......

..... it's truly one of my favorite foods..... just give me a spoon, some salt/pepper and a splash of balamic vineger, and I'm in HEAVEN'!

Same way I eat a nice ripe tomatoe!

  9. Olive oil in guacamole? Nooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!! I have to admit that I've never heard of that one! Mayonnaise? Yes. Olive oil? Ewwwwwwww!

For an authentic Texas-style guacamole, just add a little of the following to a softened, mashed-up avocado:

lime juice, chopped cilantro (a must have--it's what gives it that unique taste), garlic powder, chopped red onion, chopped tomatoes, and salt (guacamole is the only food that I actually add in a little bit of salt--sorry, WWM!)

  10. I looooove avocados. Once it ripens, just put a slice on nice fresh bread, preferably homemade warm bread.Yumm, yumm.

  11. Once ripe just spread some avocado on your toast with a sprinkle of salt(yup WWM) and some freshly ground black pepper.
If you find you like the flavour try putting a small amount of balsamic or malt vinegar in the stone hole and add some crisp crumbled bacon then eat by the spoonful.

  12. I have to agree with SM--the best sammie EVER is a croissant with turkey, swiss, avocado, lettuce and tomato. Heaven!!!!! I noticed at Subway today that they now have avocado to add to the sammies!

  13. I love slices on a hamburger. If you make guacamole, keep the pit in it to prevent it from turning brown.

  14. I agree with JK. I love slicing avocados up and adding a bit of lemon or lime juice and (don't tell WWM) a bit of salt.

  15. BLATs -- bacon, lettuce, avocado and tomato sandwiches on wholemeal bread! Or mash the avocado with a vinaigrette or just balsamic vinegar and spread on wholemeal toast! And guacamole, yum, yum! Plain slices of avocado in every kind of green salad. Plain slices on top of nachos. Mmmmmmmm, hmmmmmm!

I remember the first few times I tried avocado, when I was a little girl, I thought it tasted like warm soap! But my parents loved them so much I persevered! Now I reckon, if you have an avocado in the house, you have lunch!

Ooh, ooh, yes, let it ripen to blackish all over and test it by pushing gently on the stem bit at the top. If it's soft and the stem bit pushes in easily, it's ripe!

  16. lots of cool things with a google!

  17. lemon will give it an odd flavor, use lime juice. Or do what my fam does and sprinkle with some cider vinegar. You will want to wait till it softens before you do anything. Putting it in a paper bag with an apple will make it rippen the fastes. Apples release ethelyne gas (well all fruit does, but apples are particularly good at it) and that will make any other fruit rippen faster(yes I payed attention in botany class and I can almost still draw out the entire pathway for photosectiesis)

  18. Vicki...since you have a garden, plant the avocado pit...they make beautiful plants! My mom had one that she planted outside and it grew two stories with a thick trunk...very pretty.

  19. Dee, I live in Cleveland; I'm not sure my avocado tree will grow this far north.

  20. Take out the stone and fill the cavity with prawns or shrimps in Marie Rose sauce. Yum!

  21. One of my favorite sandwiches is as follows: take an "everything" bagel, toast under the broiler to get crispy. Spread on a little cream cheese. Slice the avocado, and a sweet onion (Vidalia) and pile that on. If you wish, a little bit of bacon can be added to the mix. These are great for breakfast, lunch and dinner......YUMMY!!!

  22. Ave an Avo :)
    Hehe

  23. Airyshone! Pee Wee! Giizelda! You did that on purpose.
We have an advert here in NZ that says 'ave an Avo, to promote avocado eating. I have a very great dislike of words being shortened for no good or logical reason and this particular one really winds me up. Airy knows that and is having a long distance giggle at me, hence the hehe. I can wait Airy, I'll get you back. Be afraid.
My avocado is nearly ripe and then I'll have it sliced, on a bagel with crispy bacon.

  26. .... does a "happy dance" around my BLTw/A...... LOL!.... where is Jcat, she would LOVE this!!!!!

Posted 2 years ago by AV #

  27. BLTw/A is fine by me but to use only part of a word or the the first syllable makes me go Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!.
Ohhh, a BLT would be wonderful for lunch but lettuce costs an arm and a leg here in winter. I'm having a '6 vege & penne with cottage cheese and tomato' dish reheated from last night for lunch.

  28. Vicki I am from Michigan, and Mom always grew avocado plants. They are very lovely. She would start them inside as I said above, and then transplant. We never had an avocado produce from the plant, but it was a lovely plant.

  29. I am in the process of making home made chicken and egg noodle soup. I also made a lovely chicken salad with chicken, celery, apple, crushed pecan, and Miracle Whip. I have a sour dough roll for the chicken salad. It all will last for several days. I also am putting in an apple pie. I am in the cooking mood--the temperature isn't ungodly today!
