My husband and I adopted a 12 week old kitten. We have a 5 year old shepard-shar-pei rescue. She defenitly had her issues when we adopted her at 10 months but has overcome them and is an excellent "only" dog. So I convince my husband to tty out a kitten. For the most part they have tolerated each oher but my dog seems ANNOYED and really likes to chase (only when kitty sprints or runs quickly). I'm running out of patience quick!!! I'm sure I could put in all my effort and do this for the long haul. But, I don't want to lessen the quality of life for my #1 love, my dog. Does anyone have experience with this? The vet I adopted him from said I can take 2 weeks to see if they get along and if not, I can bring him back. I'm TORN. HELP!!!!

Hi, Courtney. Welcome to the Daily Kitten! I've not had to deal with your issue, but others here have. It is sometimes slow here on the weekends. Please keep checking back for helpful suggestions. This is a very friendly community and newcomers are most welcome.
Here is a useful website that has information on introducing cats and dogs:
http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/our_pets_for_life_program/cat_behavior_tip_sheets/introducing_pets_to_a_new_cat.htmlBy the way, I've had two sharpei in my life. Both are gone but they were wonderful dogs. They seem to be very loyal and gentle with their people. Not so friendly with other dogs. I wasn't owned by cats at that time, but I'm loving the three who now own me. Please click on my avatar to see pictures of my girls, Digit, Furl and Boots. :)

It does take patience to integrate new pets to existing furbabies. It almost always can be done though. How long have you had the kitten?
So far as the chasing goes, the first time kitty turns around and swats the dog on his little nose, he'll think twice about chasing her again.
Have you tried the trick of rubbing the kitten and the dog with the same cloth, preferably something you or you husband have worn and not washed yet? If the dog has a bed you can try rubbing down the kitten and putting that cloth in his bed with a handful of treats.
It might also help if you let the kitten wander around the house while you are lavishing affection and attention on the dog. That shows him that he is still the #1 doggie in the house.

You have both been so helpful and kind. Thank you, truly. Unfortunately my husband found out his mom needs heart surgery and since he lost his stepdad in April he now need to head to nor. cal to to take her there and be her caretaker. Needless to say, the situation is getting harder and he's (my husband) been pretty fragile. I wish I could have waited it out. Unfortunately, I did take Hunter back to the vet today which was SOOOO hard. Especially since he had 2 sisters there who were adopted early this morning before I took him back. Good news is that they really wanted him to be the "vet cat". They did tell me it was partly because he was so "crazy"...I mean active and they weren't sure he'd be adopted. Not something thet mention to me beforehand.I'm still devestated and trying not to cry while writing this. I love animals so much and kinda feel like a bad person/kitty mom :( My dog seems like her old self and is sooo happy. Maybe you might have advice on multiple pets to get if I were to start from scratch when (god forbid) my dear Sabreena passes. It seems like it might be easier starting from the beginning. UGh...I'm really glad that there are forums where wonderful people (like yu both) are out there to give great advice. Love to you all and you animals/family members! Thanks again ;)

Welcome to TDK Courtney. Maybe it just wasn't the right time for you to have a cat, you and your husband have alot on your plates at the moment, and animals can pick up on this. It also sounds like Hunter is quite a charater, who will be well looked after. Perhaps when things are a bit more settled you can htink about introducing a cat into the mix again. Please keep posting here, it's a great site for fun and support :o)
