  1. I get a call from this young man who went to school with my oldest son. They are both 24 now. This requires a little background so please excuse the length.

They went to school together from elementary to jr high, when we moved. This kid and his sister, who was friends with my daughter, were almost permanent fixtures at my house. Mom and dad were busted for manufacturing and distributing Meth, as well as child endangerment. Kids go to live with grandparents. Kid takes the GED test when he is 16 and drops out of school.

Fast forward to present day. This young man who is a network administrator for some large company in CA, calls to "you are the reason I am where I am today. Because of you I never gave up on myself and decided to be a better person."

It brings me to tears. What do you say to that? I don't think I did anything special. I'm in awe that he picked me.

  2. how about "thank you"? :) Maybe you don't think you did anything special, but maybe it's just that you ARE special and you were thinking about him and his sister and that was special for them.

  3. CCM, just being yourself is special enough! How wonderful of him to give you a call and tell you how much of an impact you had on his formative years! Kudos to you ;-) How is his sister doing?

  4. Thanks Linda I did say that, and how proud I am of him.

KM, sister is not doing so well, seems she choose a different path and that is really sad.

  5. When all is said and done, CM, your influence on this young man is part of your legacy. What a thoughtful thing for him to let you know the impact you had on his life. No doubt he will pay it forward too. Well done, my friend!!

  8. How wonderful, I know it must have made your day. It's great that this young man sought you out to tell you so! God put you in their lives for a reason, perhaps his sister will turn around in her own time, we can only pray. I am happy for you CCM!

  10. KW, he has a younger brother who is still in school, and he has made it his mission to see that his brother sticks it out and goes to college.

A very proud moment for me TL!

That phone call will definitely be something I remember for the rest of my life.

  12. Chuck, you may think that you didn't do anything special, but obviously you did. You believed in this young man when no one else did and the worth of that isn't really something that can be described in words. How wonderful that he called to tell you that, though - you should be so very proud.

It is oftentimes the small things that we do in life that make the biggest difference.

  18. Chuck, I am proud to know you. It does not a shock to me that you have made a difference. Kind words, hope and a positive attitude can work wonders. Sometimes in ways we can never imagine. Kudos! Hugs, purrs and a big texas smile for you.

  19. Chuck, you made a huge impression on a fragile person who could have had a wretched life. Because of you, he has a life, and a very good one, too. You saved his future by simply being kind -- which is the hardest thing of all, when you really think about it.

Bravo! We are all blessed and proud to know you! You are a remarkable man.

  20. Standing ovation from me and the girls! What a Blessing your were and are in this young man's life! He has stepped back and realized it was you that helped him go down the right path. What an awesome thing! You were able to something that most of us will never do (even with our own kids, if we have them!). Raises a champagne toast to CCM! Kudos!

  21. Well, well, it's always the quiet ones...!

That's a lovely thing for the young man to have said to you CCM :o)

  22. Wow, Chuck, that's wonderful. No more hiding your light under a bushel, let it shine. You payed it forward, unknowingly, and it has come back to you now. That was so great that this young man let you know about it.

  23. Chuck, it's amazing, isn't it? Believing in someone can change his or her life. What an amazing gift to give that young man! I hope he never stops believing in himself, or in his ability to similarly affect someone else; it's the kind of gift that keeps on giving.

    Very touching!

  24. Chuck it isn't everyday that you get to know that you made a difference in the life of an individual. You gave a beautiful gift without any strings--that of human compassion. He accepted your gift. He became an amazing individual, and is passing on what you taught him to his brother. He learned to be an amazing individual from the exceptionally amazing individual that taught him--YOU! My prayer is that now you can continue a relationship with each other and you can continue to mentor him--he is one lucky young man!

  25. Chuck, you say you didn't do anything special, but to an outsider it's easy to see that for this lost boy and his sister, whose parents were busy wrecking their own lives, you WERE a dad to them when they needed one most. You say they were practically a permanent fixture in your house -- how much that must have meant to them, to have a safe, normal, loving place to be. Bless you, I'm so proud to know you, and bless that young man for telling you!

  26. SM, I hope so too...he still stays in touch with my son so that makes it easier for us to stay in touch. I told him I wanted updates :).

Jcat, I have some great memories of him and my son laying in the floor playing video games. I'm just very happy that things have worked out well for him and pray that his sister finds her way to a better life.

  27. Chuck, it just goes to show that acts of kindness, however seemingly small or ordinary, create large ripples in people's lives. Bless you for caring.
