  1. 4. How likely is the future that Brockmeier paints in the novel–melting polar icecaps, the mass extinction of animals, a plague deliberately spread by terrorists? What aspects of our current situation point to such a possibility?

  3. Scarey that this is surely a possibility. Of course, the city beyond itself scenerio may be totally different; obviously that's something we will each learn in our time. It's often in the news about shelves falling from icecaps; the polar bears are in big trouble, and aquatic life will certainly perish without icecaps. I certainly did think of terriorism while reading this.

  4. We have already seen some of these happenings take place. We have also read propoganda that this will destroy our world. They imply that the virus was started to stop terrorism. One of the largest reasons we wanted to go into Iraq was because we had intel that told us that they had weapons of mass distruction.

My biggest thought is the penguin is gaining size=a giant penguin?

  5. Although there is great debate about whether the greenhouse effect actually exists, there certainly is no doubt that weather patterns are changing. As that happens, it will impact animal life (and human life) on our planet. It happened before eons ago and it will no doubt happen again.

As far as a plague deliberately spread by terrorists - that is entirely within the realm of being possible today.

  6. Can you imagine the Coca-Cola company out to bring you the latest in drinks with the purest ingredients! I just thought it funny knowing how corrosive Coke is. I liked some of the satire he used when devolping his book.

  8. .... I don't know, the jury is still out on the green house effect.....

.....could bio-terroism wipe out our race? possible, but unlikely.... we humans are much too self preservative in my HO.....

.... Coke?.... it was the "opiate" of the early 1900s,... I thought the irony was hilarious!.....

  9. He is probably a Pepsi fan! How old was the author--the young seem to gravitate to Mt. Dew--a Pepsi product. So how many want to rush out and grab a Coke?

  16. I think he could have picked any corporate entity and I would have felt the same way...I don't think it is too far fetched to think that a company could cause those kinds of problems...look at all the recalls.

  17. I thought the coke thing was cool. I'm not against coke but we often hear of the kind of stuff CEOs in big business pull and seem to feel entitled--all in the name of making more money. It just seemed so possible and even after death the one man was still trying to cover up.
