  1. 8. Explore the connections between the novel’s main plotlines–Laura’s struggle to stay alive in the Antarctic and the existential predicament of the recently dead. In what ways, obvious and subtle, do these stories connect?

  2. The only thing I can come up with and I am going to sound like a dork but is the memory thing again. When you are alone, time to think, memories come back easier sometimes. I would like to say that might be part of the reason some keep running into each other.

  3. They ran into each other because of her memories--I couldn't help but think that.

  4. You know, I was almost at the end of the book when I realized that I had read about people at the beginning of the book before they were dead, and then read about them in the City. They were all connected because Laura had some memory of them, even if it was a small memory. And Laura remembered them as she struggled to stay alive in the Antarctic. In the end, it seemed as if everyone in the City had some connection to Laura. When she was gone, the City disappeared. Although it never said so, do you all think that Laura was the last person left alive on earth?
