  1. Geoffery's chin is all red and blotchy and around his lip is too, what could this be? It is not bumpy or pussy, it is just red on his skin under his fur. It doesn't seem to be bothering him too much, just a little itchy sometimes.

How can we clear this up and what can we do to prevent it?

    Thanks!

  3. What type of food dish are you using. Cats often have an allergic reaction to various plastic bowls. I find an old glass pyrex lid (the kind without a knob) makes the perfect shallow dish. No lead, no plastic, no corrosion, and no bacteria in the cracks issues.

  4. He might have "kitty acne".... Cuddles gets is sometimes, my vet says it's caused by bacteria, probably from her feeding bowl...... she uses a ceramic bowl, and I feel guilty because I didn't know it needed to be washed out each day (I do now).... I was just pouring more food on top of the old stuff she left...... now that I "know" better, she's cleared up a lot.

  5. Thank you so much guys, we are using plastic bowls right now. I will be going after work to buy either glass or stainless steel.

  6. Yes, plastic bowls are not good for cats. They get skin problems on the chin and face and can also have negative reactions to chemicals that leak from the plastic into their food.

Glass, stainless steel, or non-lead ceramic bowls are best.

Also very important is to wash the dishes every day in hot water and soap.

I have enough cat food dishes that I simply pick them up each day, rinse them and run them through the automatic dishwasher, and put down fresh water and food in clean bowls.

I bought some of the little Corelle livingware dessert/berry bowls at the discount store. They work great for food, fit well in the dishwasher and take up little room to store them stacked. I use small glass mixing bowls or large glass ash trays for the water. Both work great and are not expensive.

  7. My Mickey and Willow occasionally get this on their chin. They both have white chins like your baby. This occurs despite using non plastic bowl. The one instant remedy I have found is washing their chins with soap and water using a washcloth, after a couple of days , it clears up. Hope this helps.

  8. Does Geoffrey wear a flea collar? It could be irration/allergic reaction to the flea collar.

  9. Good advice from Tigerlilly about washing the cat's chin. It's an area that cats often don't get washed as well as the rest of their face.

It's okay to also take a small alcohol swab and clean the chin with that. Just be careful not to get any alcohol on the nose or in the eyes.

  10. My babies all get kitty acne once in a while. I use a warm washcloth and a little bit of mild baby shampoo to clean it up. They don't like it but it works.
