  1. Well, you lose about 25% of the strength of the pedal stroke with regular pedals because you can only push down, but you can't pull up. With the cleats you have full power throughout the pedal stroke. And if I'm going to try to do the 150 mile ride, I would never make it not being able to power through the stroke.

Surely I will learn to unclip safely! Maybe......

  2. What did you name the turtle WWM?

  3. She doesn't have a name yet! I'll have to try and figure out her personality first. That is IF I can recognize her! I think that they are beginning to wonder at the store why I buy so many cantaloupes! Yesterday I tried to give them strawberries and four of them turned up their turtle noses and walked away.

  4. aren't there pedals, with just "slide" in things at the end, where you don't have to undo anything, but simply slide your feet out the back.... I think they are like dome shaped, so you can push down and pull up.....

  5. WWM, so sorry about the fall. I haven't been back on my bike since my fall. I still have a scab on my left elbow. I am going to make sure I have my helmet on the next time I go riding and am contemplating putting the bike in the car and taking to a nice flat area for my next ride. Maybe the park where I can just go round and round and not have to worry about traffic!

SMM your twinings tour sounds like fun! My sister in law and I are going to the tea shop on Saturday and then are taking a jewelry class. After that I am sure wine is in my future! There are several wineries near here so we may take a tour! (with a designated driver of course!)

  6. Yep - that's what was on my hybrid bike when I fell the first time. Believe it or not, those things are harder to use! I have discovered that the trick is to anticipate having to stop and then there's time to unclip. In theory.....

  7. KK, I saw a bike tour of the Sonoma Valley area where you stop at wineries and ride. I showed it to Mr. WWM who just looked at me like I had lost my mind.

Yeah, that's what I should do - drink wine and THEN go for a bike ride!

  8. Kykat, sounds like you are going to have a fun day with your sister. Nice to be able to do things with a sibling.

WWM, there is a company called BackRoads that does all sorts of trips involving biking. About 15 years ago I took one of their trips that was a weekend trip touring the Alexander Valley (Healdsburg, CA area) wineries. We stayed at a hotel called Madrona Manor. Their tours stay in top notch places so they can be a bit pricey. I paid for half of my trip and my parents paid for the other half as a birthday gift that year. We biked around 35 miles a day on average and it was mostly flat. Backroads doesn't just do biking but also walking, hiking and even boating (they call these trips multi-sport). They have vans following the group who are too tired or have had too much wine. Also they have trips all over the world in fact!

This looks like the trip I took:

What about these? they don't seem to be too hard to get out of !......

..... I'm thinking you might need one of those water bottles with tube/straw that clips to your helmet..... filled with wine of course! ;)

  10. Interesting looking clips! But they are for a mountain bike :-( I'm sure that it's like anything else and I just have to practice (if I survive)!

Yes!!!! I'll get a camelback water carrier and put in a nice Chardonnay! Then, when I fall, I won't care!

    Those trips sound wonderful, SMM!

  11. Okay I just looked at what the wine country biking trip would cost through Backroads and it is a whopping $1600 for 3 days and two night! Holy cow! When I went it was $600 for the weekend. Definitely a trip for people with disposable income. If you add on airfare and spending money, you are spending what it would possibly cost to go to the Caribbean or Hawaii for a week! Wow!

  12. Whoa!!! That is some serious dinero! I was just looking at their site - I could fall all over the world!

  13. Backroad picks top rated hotels and the trip includes all three meals on each day. The food is really good and the trip is relaxing. You start off in a group but each person picks their own pace and they have a support van looping around the day's planned route to offer rides to those who are too tired or have a bike malfunction. I recall riding along by myself at one point with the beautiful scenery. It was around low 80's so it was a bit warm but not bad. I enjoyed that trip immensely. The bike now is owned by someone else and I would need to lose at least 75lbs and work out for six months with weights and aerobic classes to go on another trip like that one. I can at least drive up and be in the area within an hour and half and stay at one of the Bed and Breakfast places when I can afford to do so.

  14. *giggles at SMM* 80 isn't warm!!!! That's winter here!

It would be fun - I'm sure the scenery is just beautiful.

  16. LOL, AV!!!!!!! But would I look cool?

Posted 2 years ago by WillowandWindismom #

  17. well, you'd BE cool!... LOL... fill one with wine/martini (your choice), the other with water....!!!

Posted 2 years ago by AV #

  18. Speaking of martinis - It's 5:00 somewhere and Mr. WWM promised me a dirty martini for not whining today!

    Catch y'all a bit later!

Posted 2 years ago by WillowandWindismom #

  19. ... sounds like a good plan.... Hubbs will be making the martini, I promised to make him a pizza!.... better go start carmelizing the onions!....

Posted 2 years ago by AV #

  20. I also need to win the lotto to afford that kind of trip..yikes..$1600 for three days! I looked at the other trips and they are $2200 and up. Wow! I think there are other companies that do the "el primo" hotel and food type of trip.

The water bottle hat looks a bit heavy. Maybe those 8 oz bottles or smaller would do.

Enjoy your martini WWM and enjoy your pizza, AV. I still have an hour to go at w**k. :-(

Posted 2 years ago by SylMiaFelixsMomma #

  21. ... makes note to send SMM a nice slice of pizze thru wormhole when it's done... oh and a large martini!....

Now I've got two adjendas on my list if (when) I win the lottery -

Group TDK plane trip and meet up in NZ

and biking adventure thru wine country!..... (possibly from a side car) LOL

  22. Hi guys! Pizza and martini sounds nice but as its only 10am here on Friday I'd better pass on it. I have just had a large Vanilla Flat White coffee and a yummy brioche.
Has GD posted recently - I was wondering if we are still supposed to be doing the ritual dance and chant to get GG to ask her out.

  23. SMM what you could do is get a bike and then drive it to napa and just do little day trips on your bike. Visit one or two wineries and pack a lunch in a saddle bag and picnic! My goal is to re-learn how to ride my bike so I can do some day tripping!

Time to go to the grocery and finish house cleaning since Hazel is still apparently on strike!
