   Well, we heard from my oldest brother again last night, and he's back in the hospital. The melanoma is now everywhere, brain and spine included, and to make things worse, he also has blood clots in one of his legs from his toes to his hips. They can't give him blood thinners because of the lesions in his brain, so it's likely that the clots will eventually travel up to his lungs. The doctor said he has a few months to live at the most, but we don't think that's likely. My parents are leaving this afternoon to drive the 10 hours or so to where he lives to visit him while he's still cognitively aware.

   So, please, prayers that his suffering will be minimal. Prayers also for my Dad who will lose his father and his oldest son in the same year.

   LK, I'm so terribly sorry to hear about this. My father died of melanoma that spread, as you say, everywhere. I am praying for your brother, and for you and your family.

    I got an e-mail from my mom last night:

    "Just an update to you guys.....We got back from Midland about 9:30 last night. Todd made the trip okay, but he was really knocked out today. He sat down on the stairs and went up them backwards last night, since he wasn't up to climbing them. This is hard on Daddy, too, he's not as young as he used to be and these long turn around trips aren't as easy anymore.

    They learned Thursday that Todd's Cancer has spread to his stomach, kidneys, spleen, brain & bone. There is nothing that can be done to stop this so we are now in the next phase. The nurse from Beacon Hospice came today and got him started on stronger pain killers. They will bring a hospital bed tomorrow. We have taken most everything out of the Dining Room and he will be in there from now on. That will be much better than being stuck upstairs.. He is able to eat only small amounts at a time since the Cancer has spread to his stomach. I made Harriet's Chicken, Chicken Rice-A-Roni and green beans tonight and he was able to eat a very small portion of each and then a little bit of Apple Pie later. So, I'm glad he was able to eat something besides Smoothies, etc.

    Just wanted to let y'all know what is going on now. Keep all of us in your prayers and send us good thoughts. I will try to keep working my two days for now, but may end up taking a leave of absence, depending on how this goes. Hope all you are great."

    I know that the hospital bed and everything came today and that my Dad bought him some soups and things that he likes to eat. The doctors said that he could have as long as months to live or as short as a couple of weeks. Your continued thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated. I can't even begin to tell you how much.

    Oh Libby - I pray that your wonderful brother has a peaceful and as pain-free of a journey to his eternal home as possible. I am so sorry your family is going through such a rough year and time. May peace be with all of you as you help him to be comfortable and he knows the love flowing from you to him. I will pray for you and your family, and send comforting wishes your way.

    I'm at my parents' house for the night, and my mom tried to warn me about how bad my brother looks, but there's really no way to describe it. He looks like death. He's gaunt and pale and struggling for breath. He's almost impossible to understand. He hasn't eaten since Tuesday at lunch, which didn't stay down. My mom doesn't think he'll last the weekend.

    I don't know him well, so it isn't really loss for his impact on my life, but I feel a sense of loss for the life he doesn't get to have and loss of the chance I had to get to know him better and loss for the chance he had to try and lead a better life than he'd been living. Most of all, I feel compassion and horrible sadness over the pain he's feeling.

    He's had a crap life and is dying a crap death, and that hurts.
