  1. Yup, I'm mad. MAD. Positively fuming, steam coming out of the ears, bashing the heck out of my keyboard *MAD* If it wasn't for the fact I'm pretty damn sure I'd never get paid for my outstanding extra hours (approx 90 of 'em), I would seriously consider packing up my desk and WALKING OUT.

Family business. Half the family away on holiday. 18 year kid left in charge of production. He's off half the week anyway. Another family member just hasn't bothered to turn up (second time this week, it's not an uncommon occurence). Orders not going out the door. And when they do, no-one can tell me exactly what was sent, I have to ring the customer to ask them. This rant is a build up of similar and worse issues I have with the cmpany I work for. I am RAPIDLY reaching the end of my tether.

  2. (Kilroy pushes emergency chocolate through the wormhole STAT)

    {{{MCW}}}

I hear you, loud and clear. All I can say is, work is not worth getting riled up over, it's just work (says someone who comes home ranting at least 3 days a week). Can you talk to your boss about the situation once the family's back from holiday?

  3. MCW - It sounds like you need a vacation ;)

Perhaps a little time in the USA will help?

  4. MCW, take deep breaths, deep, deep breaths! That is a problem with family businesses...they feel like they don't have to do something just because it is a family business. Leaving an 18 year old in charge is not good when he doesn't prove to be responsible enough. Just rant here all you want...better to us than to say something that would lose you all your hours and work.

  5. Boss is waaaaay too defensive because it is *family*

There are major issues at his end too, cash flow wise, which have been ongoing for some time. Put it this way, I'm very restricted as to what & when I can order stuff in to fulfil orders because of what we owe, and I've only been paid on time twice this year to date. Like I said, it's all mounting up, and I'm starting to lose the plot.

I can't WAIT to get to the States, believe me!!

Thanks for the choc Kilroy :o)

  6. That sounds really toxic, to use a totally overused term. Yuck. Have you been job searching? (I know, it's a bad time for that all over...).

And I promise, when you're here it will be a totally work-free zone, even though I have to work on the Friday I *promise* not to come home ranting.

Speaking of w**k, I really do have to get out the door. Back in a bit, probably.

  7. I have started to sniff around, but there isn't a lot going, combination of summertime & rubbish economy. Trouble is, I really need 4 days/week, and findingthat kind of flexibility is not easy - even when the jobs market is better. I shall keep my eyes open - but I'd still be worried about losing my extra hours pay if I found somethign else... :o(

  11. I'll join you in the rant about family business's - even though I am part of the family business. This week has been one of the most stressful, with Richard sitting home 2 days because of the work van breaking down - who knew that a fuel pump would cost almost $1000 to replace, not to mention him being in my way while I am trying to get the office in a better condition. And John has gotten himself a new job so he is pretty much out of the family business, but still living here and useless most of the time. Last night I was letting off steam about John to Richard and Richard pretty much told me to shut up. So I did - I would only talk the rest of the night in response to questions aimed at me. Then John came in and was ranting about something and asked for suggestions on how to fix his problem - to which I responded with having a suggestion and he pretty much told me to shut up, as well, because he wasn't done ranting. When he was done a few minutes later, he wanted to hear my suggestion, to which I replied with " I forgot what I was going to say". It felt pretty good, too! Needless to say, I did so and didn't speak to either one of them for the rest of the night. I did enjoy the quiet. And then Richard apologized for p***ing me off - he knew it would be cold in the bed if he didn't!!! I really am starting to regret being part of the "family business" and maybe even being part of the family!

  14. You have the chocolate, sounds like you need a margarita chaser! Or should you just start with a few shots of whiskey! I think I can understand your frustration. Wish I could help--just get on the plane!

  15. Time for your holiday away from the place! Yup, I've worked for smaller Family Businesses...they are a challenge to be part of at times.

  16. Hugs to you both. I know all about family politics. My husbands family has a family business that has existed for more than 150 years. His dad and cousin were in charge of the business and then his little brother bought dad out of the business. Little brother died in 2007 leaving the cousin in charge of it all. My hubs and sister-in-law approached the cousin about taking over brothers share of the business and were turned down flat. Cousin didn't want to have to train them up. He wanted to sell to an outside interest and be done with it. Well 2 years later, he has not found a buyer and is still running it by himself. If he had brought in my husband and SIL then he would be retired by now and the business would be going along waiting for the next generation to be trained up to take over.

  17. Hugs are appreciated, KK, thank you. I am so glad that this family business didn't start with Richard's family - I have always known that Richard's mother didn't like me from way back when we were just dating, but when Richard's brother passed away at the end of May, it was decided that Richard would get his laptop. While going through all of Chuck's emails on it for Richard, I found one that mentioned me. It seems that I "annoyed" Chuck, also way back when we were just dating. I have since found out that my MIL also is upset now because I am the one who uses the laptop the most and that is not how she wanted it. Oh, well, I never wanted to please either of them, anyway, just Richard. And he doesn't mind that I use the laptop the most. Smart move on his part, I think, because he and I will be married 27 years in September. Kind of funny how I "annoyed" his brother all those years ago and he was still mentioning it within the last 5 years - must have been really bad, the annoyance!

  18. Karen, I guess sometimes it's better we don't know what others are thinking! And of course Chris could move to the States with you, MCW!

  19. At first it hurt my feelings but then I just laughed at it - this is the same BIL that gave me cleaning supplies for Christmas one year so I knew I wasn't his favorite relative, already. His problem, not mine!

  20. IT'S THE WEEKEND AND I'M GOING HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted 2 years ago by MadcatwomanintheUK #

  21. Yay! Have a great, relaxing weekend with no work. Hope your weather cooperates.

  22. Have a good one MCW. Counting the days until Chicago!

  23. I feel for you MCW and KarenC. Family run businesses can be a lot of trouble if there is any squabbling going on as well as the fact that things can get unprofessional. There are pros and cons to them. MCW, is there anyway you can put pressure on them to pay you on time without having to say you will go to the labor board? Here in the states, they have to pay their creditors first before they pay the employees their back pay.

Sending a very nice chocolate ganache tart to MCW and a huge tumbler of whatever alcoholic drink you fancy to KarenC unless she wants both the chocolate and the tumbler. Hugs to you both too. I understand job frustrations what with going through one myself currently.

  26. MCW, just take a deep breath and go home to Eric and Pickles! Oh, Chris too! LOL Work is just that, WORK! You have a life outside work and you need to focus on that now for the weekend. I understand what you mean about work stinking but it does pay the bills for me. Hang in there, you will be in the states soon!

  29. I have an appt with HR in 5 minutes. Ick! I am a bit stressed about it as it involves an incident with a coworker (HR thread about two weeks ago). http://www.dailykitten.com/chat/topic/19381

I will be needing that chocolate ganache tart after this meeting! I found a shop last night that sells them, bought one, ate it and was in heaven. I plan to go back and buy a couple more tonight.

Okay..off to my meeting. Wish me luck!

Posted 2 years ago by SylMiaFelixMomma #

  30. Good luck SMM!

    Go home Kilroy!!

I confess...we had no chocolate in the house...I just drove to the nearest garage and shoved Chris out of the car to go buy some (I had my slippers on!!)...call it an act of a desperate woman after a bloody long week!!! ;o)
