Hello. I am a new owner of two Tuxedo kittens. Their names are Boots {Boy} and Paris {Girl}. They are roughly 2 to 2 1/2 months old. I got them from my fiances co worker. They were the only two kittens the mother had. I absolutely love animals and I want to give them the best I have to offer. Now I have had kittens before, but that was sooo long ago. I am a little rusty. I am rightg now unemployed due to the downsizing of my company and get very little on unemployement, so right now I can not afford the vet. I know they NEED their shots, so I need to know of a very inexspensive place I can take them for that. I also would like to have them dewormed. I am currently feeding them 9-Lives, but I would like to know of an affordable but good kitten food I can give them. Where I got them from, the people were feeding them 9-Lives, so I did not want to change. Can anyone help me to do the right thing for my kittens even with me being on aa very low budget? Things will get better in a couple of months, but I need to get them off to a right and healthy start. I would appreciate anny help I can get.
Thank You in Advance.

Hi, Jazzi. Welcome to the Daily Kitten.
I take it your fiance's co-worker did not ever take these kittens to the vet for shots or deworming. Worms are almost always present in kittens. If your kittens aren't dewormed, this can interfere with their health and growth. I'm not recalling what the minimum age is for kittens to be given the deworming medication. The vet will take care of this for you at the kittens' first visit. The vet will also test the kittens for Feline Leukemia (FeLV), Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP). If the tests are negative, the kittens will be given immunizations to protect them against these serious and very communicable diseases. As to food, the rule of thumb is to buy the best food you can afford. That doesn't have to be the most expensive food. Look at the list of ingredients on the label. Because cats are carnivores, some type of meat or fish should be the first several ingredients. Click on the tags at the top of this thread for multiple discussions about the benefits of wet vs. dry food and the various brands available. If you decide to change food, do it very gradually by mixing some of the new food with the old. Sudden complete changes disrupt digestion and cats have been known to reject new foods if not introduced slowly.
Please keep posting and let us know how your kittens are getting along. Weekends here are sometimes slow so check back from time to time.
I have a cat named Boots too. Please click on my avatar to see more photos of Boots and her sisters, Digit and Furl. I hope you have photos of your kittens that you can share. :)

Hi Jazzi....welcome to TDK and congratulations on getting two little tuxie bundles of joy!! I'm glad you got two together, they will be best friends! One of ours is a Tuxie, they are the best! Hugs to you for taking care of them even if you aren't flush right now, I can totally relate to your situation... here is a thread that someone posted a few days ago for FREE vet visits...

In addition, the local humane society generally will have lower cost shots available, you might also want to check with local rescue groups and get vet referrals. Also, if you keep them inside, there is much less chance they would get into things that would make it necessary for more vet visits, i.e. diseases from other cats, fights, etc....
As for food, we rescued our two kitties two years ago when they were still nursing, (yours are past that stage, obviously) but once our two were weaned, they had Purina Kitten Chow for the first year and now they love Purina Cat Chow Indoor Formula. I have tried various wet foods with them, but neither Tux or Ginger seem to like any of them...they just walk away from it. I have read from others on here that Purina might not be the best of the best, but they like it, it's nutritious and the price is right. For kitty litter, I buy Special Kitty Premium (in a yellow bag) at Walmart, it's low cost too but I like it for it's odor control, especially with two kitties.
Anyway, I'm sure you'll get plenty of advice from others on TDK, the weekends can be slow. When you get a chance, maybe you can post pics of your babies - we'd love to see Boots and Paris.
