  2. PM...I'm so very sorry. Are there no safety covers for this waterbutt? I'm not exactly sure what a waterbutt is. Poor baby. I'm glad your neighbor went to the length of letting you know what happened to her.

  4. A waterbutt is a device for collecting rainwater kept in gardens. They usually have safety covers by because it had been raining so much the man had removed the cover to allow it to overflow. Hepburn must have fallen in and because they are barrel shaped and made of plastic she would have had no chance of getting out again.

  12. I am very sorry for your loss, PM. Sending you some consoling hugs. Wow, how tragic!

  13. No I didn't see her, but the gentleman described her collar, and there aren't any other black cats in the area. I could go and check by digging her up again, but I don't want to do that. If it weren't her she would be back by now.
Garbo is "squeeing" a lot (she doesn't meow), but seems ok otherwise. She's not moping and is eating normally.
When I get back from France I'll get a friend for her from the local vet who is a friend of mine. At the moment they are completely overrun with abandoned cats.

  17. The neighbour found her when his wife told him to water the plants. He buried her straight away (last night) and has been canvassing the area since then trying to find who owned a black cat. He came to me this evening. He was very apologetic, and I bet he'll never leave the cover off a waterbutt again!

  19. Hepburn's eyes are closed, and the past few minutes dance through her mind.

The water had frightened her, and then this huge Hand broke the surface of the liquid, reaching down for her and grasped her by the scruff, another Hand under her, and lifting, lifting her into the air.

The young cat felt the Hands stroking all the damp from her fur, and cradled in Someone's arms, she heard a quiet chuckle like gentle thunder over a distant mountain.

She opens her eyes now, and she sees that the Hands are gone. Instead, she is resting on a pair of large brown paws, and the eyes that gaze into hers are golden and tender.

Hepburn smiles up at the Wolf.

"Welcome, little one," he murmurs, and two small kittens, leaning against the great animal, tilting their small heads to see her better.

"Welcome, Hepburn!" says Callie, and Cubbie moves close to her as Binx and Speck dance across the green lawn to the clover beds, tiny paws moving through the grass. Their laughter floats across the Meadow.

"Where are they going?" says Hepburn.

"New arrivals are important, but cloverbeds and kittens are a wonderful combination," says the Wolf, smiling at the youngsters.

Hepburn smiles, too, sighs, and rests her chin against the Wolf's great paws, blinking happily. She is home.
