  1. i am tryin so hard to start my kittens on kitty food. they are almost four weeks and are showing no attempts to even try it. ive tried soaking it in water and in formula. ive put formula on saucer ans water. they will only nurse from the bottle. my question is instead of going to the store and buying wet food. ca i just use the can of tuna i have in my cabinet?

  2. they are a little young to stop nursing, please give them a little more time. then what i would do is mix kitty milk with wet food, most milk.

tuna, although yummy, can make a kitty a "tuna junkie" which is not good for them. they will eventually have problems with getting proper vitamins and minerals and they will get fatty liver disease...

  3. I don't know if it's a wive's tale or not, but I've heard that the mercury in tuna can be dangerous to cats. A teeny, tiny bit every once in a while is o.k., but 'people' tuna shouldn't be given to them.

  4. I had never heard that Cheri, but it's very good information to have. I was going to try giving my kitten a little Tuna but think I'll hold off for awhile until she is more used to solid food in general. She JUST had her first bit of regular food today as a matter of fact, she almost 1/2 a can of Friskies Salmon Dinner. :)

  5. I've just added a tag (in pink top right of page), click on that and you may find information that will help Amakins.

  6. thanks you all for the advice. i have been soaking purina kitten chow in their formula and in water and they could care less. the only reason ive been trying to slowly switch them to food is because on a vet website i was on said they can start at three weeks andbe compltely weened by seven. and they were threew weeks last friday. they hve all their teeth so i figured it was time.

  7. In the wild, at 3-4 wks mom will bring home kills and lick the kill then the baby's nose to get them accustomed to the smell of solid food. She doesn't start seriously trying to wean them til 4-5 weeks.

  8. yes tuna is not a good thing to feed to cats.

the only time i have used it to give to cats was to put in the back of a trap to try catch a feral.

  9. Tansey LOVES tuna. She gets just a little bit of it, plus the tuna -water- when I make up tuna salad. Not very often.... Hermes doesn't seem all that interested. Lucky for me, he just loves his dry food..and dry kitten chow is the best 'treat' for him. Satisfies him with just a few bits of kibble now and again, and keeps him from pushing Tansey away from her Fancy Feast.

One headbutt from Hermes can send her sailing across the room (lol).

  10. .... I would recommend baby food meat as a beginner.... it's VERY easy on the digestive system (made for a baby's immature system).... and "stinky" enough to command interest..... best of luck.....

  11. They are rather young. Mother's normally wean their kits at around 10-11 weeks if I am not mistaken. (somebody correct me if I'm wrong) Let them nurse. Is the mother around? Otherwise she will wean them if not just wean them off of the formula at 9-10 weeks.

  12. Oh no, they start much earlier. By the time they are 10 weeks mom has had quite enough of them--some will let them nurse occasionally, but the bulk of their food is solid. Pure tuna is NOT good in any quantity--should only be a small treat.

  13. mother cats wean their kittens when they feel like it. some as early as four weeks some way later.

however one of the farm cats was WAY to nice to one of her kittens and would still nurse occasionally when he was a year old. so for sure before that age they should be weaned lol!

  14. oh then the cat i know is one tough cookie. *grins* But anyway If the mother is there she'll do it when ever. Otherwise I'm off on weeks.

  15. i have been handraising these kittens since birth. if their mom was around i could care less when they were weaned. and you can start the transition between three and four weeks. with or without the mom.
