   a person by the name of "Eric" posts to TDK, and after being a member for 1 day, asks for $1500 for chip-in money. this is what i wrote on "am i harming my kitten"

   something doesn't sound right to me. on the chip-in page you say you have 11 cats, but here on TDK you say you have 9. also, you say that the cheapest price for a female to spay is $75. if all the cats you want to spay are female, that's $825 for 11 cats. then why are you asking on the chip-in page for $1500 ??? before i give even $1.00 i want answers please...

   let me tell you what i've found out from his posts

   lives in Las Vegas and is a poker player/dealer
   unemployed...unemployed in Las Vegas ??? as a dealer ???
   lives on wife's $675 per month SSI
   home is 725 square feet with 9 to 11 cats and wife
   wants $1500 for spaying/neutering purposes, at least 3 cats are male according to catster, $75 per cat times 11 cats is $825.00, not $1500.00

   I say don't trust this person...

   Well, I think I made it pretty clear how I felt:

   'Elm--Just a suggestion, but why don't you take the money you'd normally spend playing poker (according to your profile)and put it toward what you need to get your kitties fixed? I, personally, find it rather (crass/offensive/rude--you all can fill in the blank) for ANYONE to show up on a chat site and immediately begin begging people for money. Why not just email people that you actually know and ask them for money? This just really leaves a bad taste in my mouth. . . '

   I won't give him grief on the unemployed part - Nevada seems to be a real pain for anyone to get a job... BUT the other things mentioned seem very odd and I do agree with all "What are his motives?"

    I have no idea who this is, but when I first read it, I thought it was my boyfriend! I was about to get ALLL huffy.

    By the playing as a poker player/dealer, he probably plays online.

    The whole reason I thought it was my boyfriend is because he just recently lost his job of 2 years and has been playing online poker for extra money while he gets his CCNA. Oh yeah, and my boyfriend's name is Eric. I just looked across the room and yelled "GET OFF MY FORUM!". He had no idea what I was talking about. So it isn't him. :P

    And honestly, with 11 cats in a 725 square foot home, I say that he should probably rethink their homing situation. Sounds like the beginning of a hoarder to me.

    I agree on it sounding fishy.
    I'd like some answers on this whole deal.

    Measuring the worthiness and sincerity of someone requesting aid is always going to be a tightrope walk. Once one person has a chip-in page that gets a response, it encourages the next person to ask.

    Part of the problem is that perfectly sincere and deserving people often join the pages at a time of crisis. They are looking for advice, hope, comfort and sometimes help. They have not been among us long enough to a more or less known quantity.

    All I can advise is to be cautious and selective. Then if you choose to donate, consider it bread on the water and know that the rewards will be meted out to both giver and recipient in the kind and measure of the spirit of the transaction.

    Our recent visitor has edited the page to bring the math in line with the request. I am concerned that there is an indication that even more cats could be acquired.

    Best way to solve the problem, how about we ask for a local veterinarian in his area and have the ChipIn go to that.

    Perfect Idea, I will post the web site, phone number and address of the low cost clinic if anyone wishes me to, this is where the cats would be going for their procedures. Any help anyone wishes to give, if any, could then go straight to the vet.

    As for you people who called me a "predator" so much for keeping things fuzzy on here, just go around personally attacking someone you've never even met. Thankfully the rest of the people I have met on this site have been very warm and kind and so I know that you people are only a small sampling of what TDK is, thank God for something good, yeah?

    Just curious, as when I had my raffle for Melvin, I did this, can you have the proceeds go directly to the veterinarian? That way people have no problem whatsoever.
    I did it by speaking to my veterinarian and using a CareCredit credit card (which you should definitely get, anyways). The card will allow you to set up the account so that the funds go directly towards the card. Speak to your vet about it.
    Also, there are all sorts of very good places to go for financial help if you need it. Let me try to find those links really quick. :)

    Elm/Eric, previous Chip-In pages have been started by TDK regulars in response to a known need by someone else on TDK who is already well known and familiar to list regulars. You, however, joined and IMMEDIATELY started your own chip-in and began soliciting donations. There is a vast difference. Nothing unfluffy about such truth, merely not easy pickings for opportunists.

    That's the problem, Elm. We've never 'met' you until today. Hmmmmmmm, I think I'll run across the street and ask the neighbors, that I've never met, if I can have $20.00. I know the man is a car lover and I really do need to get that little part for my clunker! I'm sure they'll start emptying out their pockets/purses for me once they find out that I like cars, too. You wouldn't have a problem with this if it were your door that I knocked on? Get real!

    Here's CareCredit.
    It's like a credit card, but has no interest.

    And here's an entire list of helpful resources.

    Like many said, it would be best to use these resources over asking for money. Also, that many cats in such a small space just worries me to no end. I have no right to say anything, but it's always a red flag to me. If you are truly in need of money, you may need to think about your situation and do what is best for the cats by contacting a rescue group and finding them homes somewhere that can take care of them financially. I know that's a hard decision, but in the end, if you can't see paying for their care, then you really shouldn't have them.

    And I'm saying this not to attack you, but because I have been in a similar situation (except with three cats, not 11) and had to make the same heartbreaking decision. Thankfully I found homes for all of them and keep in touch to this day. Hell, one is my little brother's best friend.

    There's always a time and place to ask for money. And that's when you truly need help and have wagered against all options.

    What exactly is the money needed for? If it's just a simple spay and neutering, then contact your local shelter. Also, if I'm not mistaken, having that many animals in Las Vegas in that amount of space is against the law... But I could be wrong. Either way, you really need to think about this.

    I hope that you make the right decision in the end and wish you all the best.

    I have added a line to the posting guidelines, requesting that people do not solicit donations in TDK posts. They are far more appropriate places to do this than TDK, places where questions about verification and identity can be better answered.

    I'm surprised that Elm is under such attack. There have been a few people who have requested money immediately upon joining TDK and they were not attacked. (Although I agree with KM...I don't like the solicitation for donations on this site...I believe that could be done at other sites or amongst TDK'ers off-site.)

    I think that there are a few people on this site who have far too many cats (unaltered, as well) and yet they have been welcomed with kindness and respect. I don't understand why some TDK'ers are embraced and others are castigated.

    Who else has done this? Anyone in trouble has not to my recent knowledge ASKED for money right away--after some time it has been at OUR suggestion. Sorry if we offend you, Elm, but the internet is a predator's dream. You have way too many animals, and obviously don't have the resources to care for them, or they wouldn't keep having litters! I would love to have more cats, but I can't afford more than 3.
