  1. Totally agree with doing it all off-site, FH. People who need the assistance could still get it...and KM would no longer have to feel uncomfortable over the chip in pages.

  2. It is a solution but an isolated one. Members who do not participate in the social network sites or who do not share email addresses readily and therefore are not on the various card lists are eliminated from being able to choose to participate.

  3. Just weighing back in with another 2 cents worth - firstly, for anyone wanting to donate from overseas, chip in/paypal is much, much easier and secure; secondly I agree 100% with Ail on the maximising the opportunity to see aspect; I amongst many others have asked not to be on mailing lists, but with a thread, I can choose quickly and easily whether to read it or not.

  4. I would only give money directly to the vet. That way I am sure it goes to benefit the cat. Not to say others have misused the money donated via chip-in. Most did the page on our suggestion, they did not ask for money. Just need to be careful--I am all for helping with vet bills.

  5. I like the idea of having a panel to decide the fate of a chip-in.

I was just worried that this whole decision would end up causing me to not be able to post like another cat forum that I was a part of.
I was banned from their forum for simply having a donate button on Melvin's blog. I never received a warning or anything.

Posted 2 years ago by MouchoisMelvin #

  6. That's terrible MM. Your blog is your blog, what you put on it is up to you. If we click on your avator and go to your blog, that's our choice, so no worries there :o)

Posted 2 years ago by MadcatwomanintheUK #

  7. Haha. Good. I was really worried about that.
I do love it here. :)

Posted 2 years ago by MouchoisMelvin #

  8. Me too :o)

Posted 2 years ago by MadcatwomanintheUK #

  9. That would never, ever happen here, MM! For one thing, we would miss Melvin's funny face too much - I love your avatar! It always makes me laugh.

I don't do those other social networks, either so that would sort of exclude me from donating.

Posted 2 years ago by WillowandWindismom #

  10. I may be wrong, but I don't think you have to be part of the social networks in order to donate on someone's page. As long as the person with the Chip-in link sets their profile to public, anyone can donate.

Posted 2 years ago by FondaHonda #

  11. FH most people who do not participate in a social network like facebook do not go there just because someone says come to my FaceBook page. They need a reason to go to FaceBook that they find compelling. What is the difference between "I need help, come to my FB page and click on my Chip-in link" and "I need help, please click on my Chip-in link"? Both qualify as direct solicitation.

Posted 2 years ago by ailuromaniac #

  12. All I'm doing, AM, is thinking of a way that TDKers could still use Chip-in links since many have stated how convenient they are---isn't that what people are asking about? If I got an email from a TDKer stating that 'It sounds like X could really use some help and if you're interested in donating, just click on this link (their facebook/myspace page which contains a chip-in link)' that would seem like an easy option. Just an idea from someone who does not use Facebook or MySpace. . .

Posted 2 years ago by FondaHonda #

  13. The TDKer who is not on a mailing list would never get the email you have just described. That still leaves someone posting the link to the member's social networking page or directly to the donations page to bring the need to the attention of the rest of the community.

I do not like the concept of a clear ban. We have members who have merchandise we are interested in just has we have members with established needs. Under your plan both members would have to be part of an email sharing group to make contact.

With a committee to approve and post the links and a policy of independent request being unacceptable, KM can block out offenders, the community has a measure of protection, and the choice to refrain from social networks and email lists is not exclusionary.

  14. I just want to say that I have never been bothered, surprised maybe, at new people posting chip-in pages. I personally would find it difficult to ask for assistance in a forum as a long standing member let alone a new forum but that's just me and I don't judge others if their needs are real and help can be gotten. New or Old members..it's my perogative (sp?) to give or not give. No body twists anyone's arm and as was said earlier if there turns out to be 1 in 10 who are bogus well...that's not so bad really considering the help that is genuinely needed can be gotten. =)

  15. I have to agree with KM, the people who come begging for money have caused alot of rifts in our community and have caused alot of hurt feelings on all sides. There have been instances where the person was just playing on our sympaties. Even if this last one was ligit, I think it is high time that the posting of chip-in pages and things such as that be banned from TDK.

Posted 2 years ago by TheKnittingNinja #

  16. TKN, I agree with you. If money becomes an essential issue for anyone, the inside email network can take over. The site itself is no place for that kind of thing since we can't securely vet solicitations.

Posted 2 years ago by lisaeylau #

  17. i don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, but i think cheri was right , at least she told us to look twice at this chip in page for someone we didn't know. i work hard for my money and have no problem giving to a chip in page. But i want to give my money to someone i know and trust.. as we all know there are alot of scammers on the web who will just steal your money. i think we have every right to question and wonder who we are "chipping in." i appreciated cheri's looking out for us. i also agree with allurmanic's idea. i read all the posts and agree , there must be away that we know we are giving our hard earned money to a real cause. i like the idea of doing it off site.... i also like the idea of not having a clear ban .. yes because i love buying melvin's toys and seeing jymberry's bags and other things.... we have always been willing to help someone in need .. and never a problem with chip in pages .. i do think we should call this isolated and maybe take it one chip in page at a time.... we are praying , helpful good group of people ... let's stay the way we are.. yet be careful.... KM what ever you decide is fine with me....

  18. I think from now on the ChipIns should be paid directly to the veterinary clinic and the veterinarian that you are bringing the animal to.
It's not that hard to get your vet to work with you on getting donations. I had to do it for Melvin as a local thing, and may have to do it again if seizures come back as we'll need to fly across country to have him seen at UC Davis.

But having trouble with finances myself, I definitely think that abolishing the ChipIns isn't truly fair. But we should allow it with more caution and have some guidelines (the fund paid directly to the veterinarian, details, etc).

Posted 2 years ago by MouchoisMelvin #

  19. Oh yeah, and contact numbers to the veterinarian for further questioning.

Posted 2 years ago by MouchoisMelvin #

  20. I made a snap decision. I was the 3rd person to welcome Eric to the community and I meant it with all my heart, as I do every welcome. I also was concerned because there were things that didn't add up for me. I thought of a time when I was burned pretty bad by a person that came here for help. I don't know anything about ELM. For all I know he has a heart of gold. I probably should have questioned. If I had not been hurt before I probably wouldn't have gone on the defensive that I did yesterday. I have received the lashing I probably deserve for my reaction. Why do I say this--we all react based on our experience.

KittenMaster your experience has taught you that dealing with those asking for money has brought about strife, thus the rules you developed. I think I am beginning to understand why. I offended someone who may not have deserved it. I sit here in tears because of the things he said, although I probably deserve it. And worse in shame because I didn't catch my spelling error and that makes me feel even worse.

  24. Wow! Just caught up with this thread ~ We don't want TDK to turn into a 'begathon' web site, so I'm sure that KM and the members can figure out a way to 'keep it fluffy' and preserve the wonderful family feeling we all enjoy here!!

Posted 2 years ago by kittymom #

  25. SM, please, please don't cry (and for heaven's sake don't worry about your spelling. This is a website, not Webster's Dictionary). You are one of the most generous and compassionate people on this site and Eric will soon find that out if he sticks around. You most certainly do not deserve to be 'lashed' for looking out for our little crew, you are a sane voice of reason and I love you for being so protective of us. I don't know yet if Eric has a heart of gold or not. I certainly know that you do! {{{SM}}}

  26. Thank you. I see how he feels attacked. I welcomed him here and meant it. I just felt that asking for $1500 when $825 covered the cost was wrong. It felt like an old scam. I could have asked, but I felt like he thought we were stupid bitties with nothing better to do than throw away money when it is hard as heck to make ends meet. Should have handled it better.

By the way thank you JCat--means more than you know!

  29. Perhaps there is a way to "rank" members? Ie: Someone who has posted 30 times or been here a month is a certain level, longer means the level goes up. There could be a ChipIn or similar Forum here that is only available to those who have not received any "infractions" against posting rules and are truly valuable contributers to the forum and we have gotten to know well enough that have reached the "rank" deemed appropriate by KM himself. Only then would a ChipIn link would be allowed (might cut back on "trollers" looking for money, etc.). It may be easier than a panel, but work just about as well. Then it would be up to TDK'ers to click said link and decide for themselves. The basic rules for posting a request would be 1) Short description of what the ChipIn is for. 2) Personal e-mail address for any questions potential ChipIn-er's may have. 3) Link to ChipIn site.

Just an idea. I feel strongly that valued and loved members of this site should be able to ask if someone might be able to help out a good cause; but in turn I feel that someone should be here long enough that we know them and thier kitty family before being asked - seems more polite if that makes sense.

I also understand that some people who have just joined might unexpectedly run into a financial brick wall and need help before reaching "set rank" and perhaps there could be a smaller panal to quickly field these requests and only post ones that seem genuine and of good faith.

Posted 2 years ago by SnowFlower #

  30. I'm intrigued by Snowflower's idea of some kind of ranking, but the post that confirms my fears is from SylvesterMiasMomma, where she describes exactly the kind of scenario I'm keen to avoid.

So I'm going to leave the posting guidelines as they are - asking the donations are NOT asked for - and put my trust in the TDK family that if anyone does need help, and if the people involved are trusted members of the community, then the various e-mail networks will be able to help out.
