An Open Letter

(31 posts)
  1. Hello,

I would like to say that the "Something sounds fishy to me..." thread started out rather well, by someone who didn't know me and stated an opinion. They also later in the thread gave some very good advice. I would never deny anyone their right to have or state their opinion. This is, after all the cornerstone of both the US and the internet in general.

There were 2 posters, however, who did NOT state an opinion, but rather, they attacked my character without knowing me or anything about me or my situation. I feel that Soxsmom and Beth acted reprehensibly. Had they said something to effect of "I think he may be a predator." this would have been fine. They did not, however, after Abbigaleviolet posted "Sounds like a troll to me." Soxsmom went on to respond, "Forget troll this guy is a preditor." and Beth reponded with, "yeah he's a preditor..". Based on those 2 posts and the posters complete lack of empathy, compassion, tact or constructive input I could probably say some things about them as well. Not being a vindictive or spiteful person, however, I will let this letter suffice as my official response.

Many people had questions...GOOD! I did and will continue to answer any and all questions. Someone asked how a dealer in Las Vegas could be out of work...lol...sorry, had to laugh at that one as there are currently about 50,000 dealers out of work in Las Vegas there are more dealers than there are gaming tables and more tables than there are players.

To those who added something constructive to the thread, I give my hearty thanks. To those who did not, why?

That is all I wanted to say at this time, please feel free to post back here with any questions or constructive input you may have concerning this whole debacle.

    Thank you,
    Eric

  2. Eric, I'm fairly new on this site (less than 6 mos) so I can't answer for anyone really. However, I have found that TDK is a great group of people who love animals, have good hearts and look out for each other. They have done nothing but welcome me with open arms. I suspect that there are those out there who have been burned in the past and have their armor up when certain situations come up and therefore react strongly. That is all I have to say, I wish you the best with your kitties...I know you want to do the best thing for them! Have a good evening...

  3. Aye, I don't mind defensiveness, it's the offensiveness that gets my goat. :P

  4. Elm, when you get to know Sox's Mom and Beth, you will realise that they are both wonderful people, full of compassion -- a teacher and a nurse! -- but we have been burned on this site before and they are very protective of our little community. I hope you come to understand and I hope you stick around to get to know us. The donation thing has caused many ructions in the past. We have had posters who seem genuine and then, after donating, we begin to have doubts and then we have had posters who, like you, have seen threads offering to help with kitty expenses and so, in real need and all good faith, have asked for help and turn out to be completely genuine. But, without knowing you, how are we to know the difference? I would hate to see us never chipping in for our loved members but, like KM, SM and Beth, I see that, on the internet, good-hearted people who are struggling financially themselves can sometimes be taken advantage of. I don't know what the answer is but I know that if you stick around, and we get to know you and you get to know us, that is the best guarantee of everyone's goodwill (because it is there, believe me)!

  5. elm , you are right i did think you were a pradator... there are alot of them on the web ,sorry it hurt your feelings.. but thats how i felt... you are new to this site and you ask for money... this site is filled with wonderful people who would give you the shirt off your back.. and i love everyone of them... sorry if i had no empathy but i just wrote what i thought ,...

i am a RN here in las vegas and i do know alot of dealers are out of work... there are also alot of nurses out of work, and just poor people in this city of millions of dollars.... the ecomony is bad in vegas , my husband is very lucky to have a good job and we thank God everyday.

eric, i wish you luck in the future and all you do. i love this site and i am sorry you are having a hard time. i wish you and your family and your cats well.... i know there are shelters here that will fix your kitties for a minimal fee... you are right i am not trusting .. my husband is a policeman here in town and he sees alot of things that make me "not trusting" ... the stories he tells me .. would curl your hair....

we will talk to each other again on this site , i wish you well in all you do.. i hope you can get a job soon. i do like you avatar...

    take care ...

  6. Eric, you have to give the TDK family a bit of a chance to 'get to know ya' before you post a link asking for money; we're a very generous and close community here, and we welcome all newcomers with open arms. We all share a dedicated and, at times, ferocious love of kittens, cats, all things feline, and animals in general ;-) Please don't go away mad, just understand why some may have questioned your motives....

  7. You are right I acted and responded inappropriately. I have been hurt bad by a few that have come here with such heart breaking stories about their furry friends and the help they need, only to find out that I was scammed. I certainly understand your anger. I apologize. I have no excuse other than I have openly given to someone that made the exact claims you have made only to find out that I was scammed. I should have handled it better. Again I apologize.

  8. By the way I was one of the first to welcome you to the site--it was a heartfelt welcome as I welcome anyone new. I guess that post was over looked.

  9. Eric, Please let me say this...I have been out of the loop for a few weeks but there are two things you stated that I would like to clarify. In my experience both Beth and Soxsmom are great people but there have been issues in the past (part of the reason I have stayed away) and people get their guards up and second I do not have a doubt that you can be a dealer in Vegas and be out of a job. My husband and I were there in March and talked to some employees and they were telling us horror stories of cut hours, expecting people to cover twice the areas...they didn't sound happy.

Please don't give up on the group and as you open up so will they...

Posted 2 years ago by Alicia #

  10. alica sorry if i hurt your feelings in the past i never would do it on purpose... i try to be great people . but i am not perfect, i would hope you would never stay away because of me ... you contribute alot to this site and i value your thoughts. i feel bad i hurt you and i'm sorry...

yes las vegas is a rough place and lots of people are out of work. Not that is not rough anywhere else.. there are many nurses who can't get jobs... i see people everyday who stop taking their medication because they can't affored to fill the script. i had a pt who was elderly that had nothing to eat for 3 days because she had no food .. she was so ill i did't think she'd make it... so yes eric is right...

  11. Thanks for sticking with us, Eric. You will fit in just fine here. :)

  12. Might I point out pls, that I never said I thought Beth or Soxsmom were bad people. I thought they had a bad choice of words. My main problem was, while I agree that Beth and Sox both had the right, and possibly reason, for thinking what they did the way it was said was what got me going, it was stated as fact not as opinion. Anyhow, as far as I'm concerned it's over now. Thank both of you ladies for your responses here in this post. they really made me feel better about staying here. I wasn't trying to anger anyone with this post nor hurt anyones feelings, just to state what upset me about the other situation. Soxsmom, You are also right that you were certainly one of the first to welcome me to the site and very warmly, I didn't mean to overlook it in this post.

Beth, yes, I agree this city is quite rough, I live in a poor neighborhood near Fremont and Eastern so I see quite a lot of bad things here myself, but if your hubby works with Metro I don't even want to THINK of some of the things he must see every day. I have several friends who work with Metro and the things I hear from them are just sick, and I get the feeling most of that stuff is the tamer stuff.

Anywho, I'd just like to close the book on this chapter of my stay here at TDK and start the next one...the warm fuzzy one with the kittens and cuddles. :)

  13. Eric -

Your post here is exactly the reason I love this forum above all others. As were the replies. This indeed is a close-knit community, and for the most part (say 98% of the time) it is mature, kind and well-thought-out posts that make me keep coming back! You very easily could have gone on the defensive (I won't lie - I've done it myself) and said some mean things yourself - but you didn't. You handled your "broken buggy feelers" with dignity, respect to those involved, and well-written prose. I commend you and look forward to getting to know you as well.

  14. I must have missed the other thread, wow. Eric, welcome to the community and kudos for you for handling this so well. I don't think I have seen your intro thread, so I apologize for not welcoming you properly.
    *waves hi*
Alas, feathers here get ruffled from time to time..I try to stay out of the fray till all is settled. Just like any family. We are close and we try to move heaven and earth for our TDK family if we can. It is rough out there and I do home your situation gets better and fast. So many without jobs and security of their life, is so hard and heartbreaking. Anyway, welcome again.

  17. Welcome to TDK-dome Eric. Looking forward to getting to know you too!!! My kits are Oliver and Sammy in my avatar. I hope things get better soon in Las Vegas. I wish I could send some of the Disney tourists your way. You would never know the economy is so bad if you were to visit there.

Posted 2 years ago by SammyandOliversmama #

  18. Wow it's wonderful to see that all is good. And yes SOM if you want to go to Vegas you'd better get there before they close the doors. If you go on the weekend, during the summer, you will see a few others there. But if you go during the week you can hear an echo!! They have been hit very hard by the economy and I fear that when summer passes it will only be worse there. Disney on the other hand amazes me too!

  20. Hi Eric. It's a tough cookie who comes in here in these times of trouble, into the midst of a tried and true group of friends and can survive the wrath of it's protectiveness. Once bitten twice shy..an old cliche no doubt but I know you're sensitive enough (it does happen with some men..LOL..ducking under desk)to understand that any one of us at any given time can knee-jerk (a popular term here recently) when attempting to fill in the blanks for someone new who seeks help. You obviously have lots of kitties who ABSOLUTELY need spay/neutering and that is first and foremost for most of us. Sometimes people don't have the time to establish close ties to a group....the unwanted pregnancies don't allow it the time. I pray you are able to find alternate sources for the help you need so desperately. Your local animal shelters may be able to steer you in the right direction for lower cost animal care. Also the animal supply stores will very likely have helpful information. Just ask around. People shopping in these stores love to share what they know about helping pets. When we took on our 4 feral sibblings through a voucher from the Humane Society + a donation from a local shelter here we actually got our kitties spayed and neutered for free. You may find in doing some digging around that there is more help for you than you think. Sorry....didn't mean to go on and on. I was only going to say "Whew" glad this flurry of Unfluff is over! Hope you stick around...you won't be sorry! =)

  21. eric .. you are alright in my book... you are a gentleman and i appreciate your kindness... i'm sorry we started off on the wrong foot.. we really are a good group here , and i'm glad you are a member of our TDK family... you are never alone if you are here with us... you will meet so many good people and we are pray all the time.. for everyone .. so if you ever need prayers or a ahoulder to lean on this is the place to come...

you would think las vegas with all the money floating around there would be no poor or hungry people.. but there are, and it's sad.. so many people are out of work and you would think health care couldn't be touched , but it is we are feeling the pinch, nurses laid off , and many new grad RN's cannot get jobs.. the hospitals are not hiring new grad RN's. nurses are not given overtime anymore , we work our 3 days and thats it...

my husband tells me that the domestic violence calls have icreased because people have money problems. i pray he comes home safe everyday i worry.. he is in danger everyday... eric welocme to TDK !!

  22. Hi Eric! Welcome to the litter. Sometimes our tails get big and bushy, we hiss and growl but then we all calm down and start purring. Isn't that the way it is in a big ole cat colony? I live in north mississippi with 5 cats and 3 canines. Hail Hail to the king of rock n roll........

  23. Welcome Eric woth open Paws...I'm glad you chose to stick around. I understand all too well the problems with unspayed females running amuck, making new furries. At one time I was strapped with 23 ferals in various stages of life. My TDK Family came to my rescue (God Bless them All). At one time I was in such despair from the craziness of responsibility, that they literally helped keep me from doing something drastic to myself. They helped save my sanity, which in turn saved my life. With alot of hard work & missing lots of sleep(had to think like a cat to catch a cat),the neighborhood kitten mill was finally closed. It took 6 yrs. to finally trap the intact male Hopper & 3 yrs. to trap the illusive, preggie all the time female Ms.Hissy. It's still crazy here caring for 14 that fell thru the cracks of adoptability, but no more litters.
Sorry for me going on. I've been w/TDK since the beginning(several yrs.now) & I can promise...you will never find a better, worldly or loving bunch of people anywhere else. Animal Lovers Rock!

    Welcome again Eric!

  25. Eric, you answered like a gentleman. I look forward to hearing more about your kitties. My husband and I visited his brother who lives in Vegas. It was a Friday night on Freemont St., and by 1:00PM it was practically deserted!. I used to go to Vegas about 3 times a year with my previous husband (who retired there) and I remember there were so many people you had to wait for a spot at a $5 blackjack table. I think besides the economy, AZ having built many new casinos has cut into travelling to Vegas. They are always packed out here.

  26. We all would love to hear that all of your cats are fixed, Eric. Please do your level best to make that happen via low-cost clinics that are abundant nowadays. I know many people on this site have very strong feelings in reference to inside vs outside cats, clawed vs declawed cat and shots vs no shots and even what is considered a healthy diet vs an unhealthy diet for our cats. But there is one thing that I am certain 99 per cent of all TDK'ers agree upon...and that is to make certain all of our cats are spayed/neutered to make for a healthier, happier cat and to not add to the horrific worldwide cat over-population problem.

  27. Hey Eric! I don't think I greeted you on the first thread, so I'll do so now.

Beth, I find it ironic (or sad, perhaps -- my brain isn't functioning too well today!), what you said about nurses in your area because I could swear I keep hearing about nursing shortages -- maybe that's just Texas?

If only Texas allowed casino gambling, then all the dealers who are out of work in Vegas could come here.

    Posted 2 years ago by Cats4Cats #

  28. Thank you all for the welcome, I truly appreciate it.

The worst part of this economy is that if it had happened 20 years ago when the mafia still ruled this town Las Vegas would have been almost completely unaffected by it. Gambling is recession proof. Now that the big corporate people are running things though, gambling isn't as big a part of the cities income as it once was, now they want to make money from the food and hotels, which the mob practically gave away (and in a lot of cases literally gave away as well), they knew where the real money was and how to extract the maximum amount from the tourists.

Beth, I will keep you and hubby in my prayers as well, being a cop is a dangerous job in the best of times and I have a great amount of respect for anyone who can do it without cracking under the pressure or allowing the power to go to their heads. I could certainly never do the job, it would drive me insane, I think some of the things that people do to animals and each other would seriously make me want to bring them bodily harm and I think I'd rather stay as I am, not wanting to hurt anyone.

To anyone living in or coming to Vegas, my wife and I would love to be able to meet some people sometime so if anyone is ever interested please be sure to contact me. We moved here 2 years ago and the neighborhood we live in is littered with...people I'd rather not associate with. There are a few good people around here but, too few.

Thank you all once again, I am looking forward to being a part of this obviously wonderful community.
