uncovered or covered litter boxes better

(14 posts)
  1. Uncovered seems more natural and less claustophobic but I am tired of litter everywhere. Curious what most people use. Also if maybe uncovered is better for babies and covered good when older. Welcome any opinions, thanks. I know a lot of people prefer covered because it smells less and keeps smells inside but then does that smell worse to that cat inside?

  2. I know some people swear by covered litter pans but, how would you like it if the only facilities you had to use were those port-a-potties found at constructions sites? But for the sake of not wanting to scoop religiously and change litter frequently they will buy them for their very sensitive-nosed kitties.

I have a LitterMaid. The litter is automatically scooped into a closed bin and kitty has an open facility to use.

  3. I used the covered tray for miso until I noticed she was coming out covered in dust. She developed asthma and I am convinced the maize litter in an enclosed tray was the trigger. She's on an inhaler now. I changed the litter of course, and continued to use the covered tray until I realised she couldn't do her business upright - the roof constricted her as she had grown. This is not good for kitty intestines, to crouch in an unnatural position. You can get super-tall covers which would be fine, except I agree with Ailuromaiac - it's just not a pleasant experience for cats to go inside a tiny house. So, I took the lid off, and she breathes and relieves herself with more freedom now.

  4. We use covered litter boxes because Grommet has always been what I call a 'vigorous digger' ~ she flings litter up in the air for many seconds before she decides she has the 'perfect spot' to do her business; even as a very young kitten sharing small uncovered kitten size litter boxes, she would 'throw' litter all over outside the box before she had the perfect spot to do her business. Mac, on the other hand, has no problem with 'throwing' litter and is happy with a covered or uncovered litter box.

We tried Litter Maid boxes (two), but Mac is too big to use them properly :-(

so, we've gone back to extra large conventional covered litter boxes.

  5. I have to use the 'cement mixing' trays/boxes from Home Depot or Lowes because I have bigger kitties and they love to dig, fling, and whatever else they desire at the moment in them. And they are cheaper than anything else I have found, under $5 a piece. Have tried the covered ones, the automatic ones that drove me nuts because Ms. B would sit and wait for the rake to finish and jump back in to make it move again, sigh.

  6. BTW, I have two Litter Maid boxes we don't use, if anyone is interested.... If you'll pay the shipping, I'd be happy to send them to you... just email me at bestmomcat at yahoo dot com and we'll figure it out....

  7. I've heard really good things about the cement boxes too! I guess it's a trial end error thing! My littlest fosters did fine in the medium size litter pan I have, while the older ones sprayed litter everywhere. I guess I'll keep the one I have on hand for the babies and if I get the bigger guys again upgrade to a larger and deeper one or a cement box. I probably will try a covered one at some point just to see, although I think I must have been a cat in a past life and did not like that kind, haha!. I THINK for strays the idea is to start with a pan since it is closest to what they are used to and easist to train them that way. I'll look into the litter maid too out of curiosity, thanks!

  8. With 8 kits in various stages of growth inside, I use both, covered & uncovered. They all use which ones suit them the best. 3 of the opened ones are the big cement tubs that AzDeb mentions. They work great for the larger & more aggressive diggers of the house.

  9. Have you tried the deep sided boxes?

I got a jumbo sized one from petco with high sides and a lower walk in side. the only litter now tracted is the stuff that it's up in the toes and toe tuffs!

  10. Haha...when it comes to my Spunky, it doesn't matter how high the sides are. Sometimes I have to get after him because he gets in a playful mood & decides to spin donuts in the litter.

  11. hahaha feral! And way to go Spunky!

max is the digger and the flinger. Mystie sometimes I wish covered better. She doens't do such a great job covering her poopy. And when Max comes along and smells it he gets a wrinkled nose look and then steps in and covers it up real good hahah!

  14. I did see the extra high sided pan and that'll be the next upgrade when my next foster kitties( whoever they are) are big enough. Then if needed we'll try the cement pan or covered (definitely without the door which makes ME claustrophobic!). Just as as funny story, My last 2 fosters often went together for what I guess was a bonding experience. The little girl would follow her big brother into the box and he was quite tolerant. Too cute. I think I am officially a crazy cat lady now, with this post. Yikes.
