Tansey's biological brother, Basil, peed anywhere and everywhere. We used to have very nice, plush rose-colored carpeting downstairs, but we just couldn't keep up with the Pisser(tm). When we finally made a hard decision to put him to sleep, we ripped up the awful, smelly, stained carpet to find the oak hardwood floor underneath. Took us a couple of months to sand it and refinish it, but it was so worth it. Much easier to take care of, and easier to clean kitty barfs (lol). We have big rugs on the floor, along with a couple of smaller ones, and there are times the kittehs get a running start and sliiiiiide on those small rugs. You know darn well that THEY know what they're doing (lol). And they sometimes play at the edge of the bigger ones. One cat on top, one cat tries to worm underneath the edge to 'hide and go seek' with the other.
We had a fire in the basement long before we moved in, and there is a spot on the dining room floor that's a bit black. We tried to sand it out, but apparently the fire was rather intense right below that particular spot, and the black area is where the fire began to affect the top surface! So there the spot stays... I think it was the old coal furnace that caught on fire, and it didn't do sufficient damage to the house to condemn it, but there's signs of water damage on the second floor, with peeled wallpaper and such. The old girl has real character... built about a hundred years ago.
I liked reclaiming/refinishing the floor, but I learned that I do NOT like to install carpeting. I'd rather pay someone else to do that for me. Also, installing vinyl flooring, I would leave that to the professionals. Lots of other stuff we can do...but certain tasks, no.
