  1. To those who may remember when I accidentally killed one my kittens, thank you for your kind words. Now, I need your encouragement again. The organization Stray Cat Alliance was kind enough to send a person to pick up my Mama cat and two kittens for spaying and neutering, but when I tried to put my cats in the car of the woman who they sent last night, my cats freaked out and one of the kittens, a black kitty named Midnight, scratched his way out of my arms and then ran away. I hoped he would come back to my apartment, but he just vanished. This was actually my favorite kitten of the bunch, extremely loving and friendly, and now I am so worried that he will simply die in the streets. I've looked all over the neighborhood, asked all around and put up reward signs for his return. Mama and the other boy kitten, Chester, will be returned Friday. Mama was very good at corralling and bringing her kittens in when they got out before. Does anybody know if Mama can find her baby by scent when she is returned on Friday night, or will the scent have vanished by the that time? I will also go to our closest animal shelter to search for him tomorrow, which is actually very far from my neighborhood. I'm sorry to call on emotional support so soon after my last request. And to those who have been following my mom's (KP's mom) haiku postings and her serial story about her cat Lady, thank you for your kind words; you made my mom's day!

  2. I'm sorry one of the kittens got away from you! Sending lots of TDK white light to help Midnight find his way back home. {{{hugs}}}

The mama cat and kitten who've been spayed/neutered will smell like "vet" when they come back to you. That is an off-putting odor to other resident cats in your home. If you have any blanket or item that mama cat laid on and can set it outside, it may help attract Midnight back to you. You might wish to talk to the vet about whether or not to let mama cat out to look for Midnight. You might end up losing them both and/or having complications with mama cat's spay. Good luck!

  3. I added a "hoover" tag that leads to a recently missing pet with suggestions on leading the scared escape back home. The other two tags do not yet lead to other posts. Perhaps others among us will have links that will have helpful tips.

    I'll keep positive thoughts.

  4. I asked the volunteer driver if it was safe to let Mama cat go outside and she said that it was, that there should be no problem with this. But now I see from what you say that Midnight will not come to Mama as long as she has the smell of Vet on her. I wonder how long this smell will last. My normally optimistic stance on life is fading.

  5. Others here have reported it taking a day or two before they start smelling like themselves again. Resident cats may hiss at the vet-smelling ones as though they were strangers. You might be able to hurry up the process of returning mama cat to her normal smell by wiping her down with a cat wipe. You can find them in pet stores. You can also wipe her down with items she's laid on or her kittens have laid on to help her smell more familiar to Midnight.

Try not to be discouraged. Midnight may find her way back all by herself. Keep going outside and checking with neighbors.

  6. Have you been letting Mom out before this? If not be sure to just take her on a leash or in a carrier on trips to find the little one.

Rub her down with kitty wipes followed by stuff with her home scent to reduce the smell. Remember, while she will smell differently, her kitten will still smell the same to her. Her call will not change and he may obey that. Meanwhile keep looking and calling baby.

  7. Thank you everyone for your input and prayers. To start with, yes, Mama cat is used to going outside, so I am not worried about that per se, though I do worry that she should heal first, even if the Vet says it is OK for her to go outside. I am also worried that Midnight has gone too far away for Mama to find him. I don't know how long his scent will hang around, but I hope Mama can detect it. I will wash Mama with wet wipes then rub her down with a blanket she and babies sleep on. Thank you everyone for that suggestion and all for all your support. I wish I didn't have to wait until Friday night for Mama and her other kit to come home.

  9. I added the tag 'lost cat' KP, there is another recent thread from Theresa about her lost cat, Pepper, and we put suggestions on it and websites that may be useful to you as well. I would think, as he's a wee kitten, he would stick around where he knows the food is but of course I don't know what might have scared him outside your home (traffic, strangers, dogs etc). Nevertheless I would assume he's hiding close to home so maybe start by thinking from a tiny kitten's point of view, who's looking for a dark, small hiding place where he can't be seen, and search all round your house/building for places like that?

    Good luck!

  13. Mama cat and baby boy Chester have been returned a day earlier than expected from spay/neuter respectively. They seem fine, in fact, if I hadn't been told they had gone through these procedures, I would never have been able to tell anything had happened to them at all. I'm letting them both rest, though Chester is already his playful self. I have to say that I don't have high hopes that Mama will be able to find her other missing kitten, Midnight, but at least I have the two of them still with me and that is great comfort. Tonight, I will see if Mama wants to go out or not to look for her missing kitten. I hope she does and that she finds him, but I'm afraid that is hoping for too much. In the meantime, I just fed both Mama and baby and they ate with no problem so it appears that their health is good. I'm still waiting to see if my lost kitten posters garner any responses. Thanks for the wet pipes suggestion and also letting Mama sleep in her bedding that I did not wash in order to retain her scent. I'll let everyone know what happens. Thanks for the support and my love to all of you.

  17. KP...maybe you could put Mama's bediing inside a carrier w/the door left open. And if little midnight is close by & can smell her scent,he may come to it. Best of Luck to you. I know too well the anxiety you are feeling. Hang in there. You've got TDK spirit on your side.

  24. Thank you for your prayers and support. Mama cat went out for a few hours both yesterday and again today, but did not return with Midnight, her missing kiity. She is walking funny after her spay procedure and maybe she's in too much pain to search the neighborhood as yet. Midnight's three and a half month old brother, Chester, seems fine after having been neutered, as if nothing had happened to him at all. I have one more tom cat who lives with me who was also neutered as a kitten, though he's now ten years old. I'm sure he was pleased to have my apartment just for us again and not have to share it with these "invading newcomers", (his sentiment, not mine) while they were being spayed/neutered, but I feel quite the opposite; I'm very glad to have them home. I'm at the place now where hope for Midnight's return is waning quickly. I'm afraid he's doomed to die on the streets. My apartment is in a protected courtyard, so my cats are safe as long as they remain inside, but if they are outside anything can happen. When Midnight ran from the woman's car I didn't see where he ran, but since her car was right outside my complex and there is easy access for cats to come and go between the bars, I thought he would go back inside, but now it's obvious that did not happen. The only thing I can do is love and care for my remaining cats.
But I will search the two animal shelters I know of later today, just on the small chance the kitten ended up at either of them. They are very far from here and the buses run infrequently so I will not be posting my success, (or lack thereof) in finding Midnight until later this evening.

  26. Sorry I have not had time to post until now. Just letting you know I have been and will continue to pray for little Midnight to come home safe & sound.

  27. I am praying that if Midnight doesn't come home to you, at least he will find a home with someone who sees him and wants to keep him. I'm glad you have Mama and Chester and they are OK. I'm sure Mama is in some pain, females have a harder time it seems.

  28. That is my wish as well, Annie. He is such a sweet kitten that I can see how someone else, particularly a child, could easily fall in love with him. But I have seen many feral cats who are starving and living out of trash bins in my neighborhood and people that don't seem to care at all about the problem, so, once again my hope is diminished. But I have to admit at least there is the possibility he could find a loving home. I was directed to a website that has pictures of all the animals recently sent to our local animal shelters, so I don't have to go by bus, unless and until a photo shows up that looks like my missing kitty. Thanks everyone for your support.

  29. Hi again KP, I know it seems like a long shot but I'm posting a link I found awhile back. I'm not sure who runs it, but it's like a kitty lost and found on the internet. It might be the same site you mention above. Stay hopeful, I know it's so difficult, the worst thing is not knowing.....

  30. Thanks again, Annie.

What a sight I was going around my neighborhood calling out "Kitty, kitty, kitty" looking for Midnight, because I was followed by five cats who I didn't really even consider to be my cats, since I never let them inside my apartment and only feed them outside. Three of this bunch were abandoned by the same people who abandoned Mama and babies who I now take care of and whom are primarily inside cats. The other two were neighbor's cats who know me very well. One of the cats who was abandoned followed me for three blocks! And since I kept on calling "kitty, kitty" and would always pet him when he came up to me, I guess he thought I was calling him. Well, I certainly consider him to be my cat now. If only Midnight could be one of the cats who comes up to me, but apparently this isn't going to happen.
