  1. Hey everyone! I don't know if you have Bulmer's Cider outside Europe, but they launched a competition and there's a €200 prize. It's all about the fact that they have branched out (so to speak) from apple cider to pear cider, and they're trying to market it in a personal way by offering prizes in different categories every month. The theme is 'embrace the pear' and their whole campaign is based on a sweet idea that none of their loyal workers can bear to 'go pear' after a century of apples!
I entered this month's poem section. Here's my offering: http://www.embracethepear.com/bulmers/words/2009/08/20/2574/
Can all my TDK family vote for me please??? :-] Shameless I know, but that's what they suggest!
If won, my prize money goes towards a tiny village in Nepal, where I spent 3 months teaching as a volunteer last year. I send children I came to know and love there the fees for their schooling annually. It's not much by our western standards, but it means the difference between scraping a living and getting a good job for them. Thanks!!

  4. Don't be embarrassed, we all need a little kick start from time to time...If they have this in the US I haven't seen it, but will check it out..Pear Cider sounds very yummy. I love apple cider...
And of course we will vote for you..but keep bumping. How long does the contest run for? can we vote multiple times??
What a wonderful thing you plan to do with the money if you win!!

  5. Eleniki, keep this bumped in the afternoon. Many writers and poets are usually on later in the day.

  6. I thought the poem was excellent and clever! I voted 10 stars :)

  8. What a clever poem!!!! I voted for you, Eleniki! Can we vote multiple times? And what a wonderful project you have chosen for your winnings (I'm counting on TDK votes to push you way over the top!) Have you read Three Cups of Tea, by any chance? If not, you must.

And on the subject of pears... when I was a hospice nurse in New Mexico I made a patient visit one day and walked into a house with the most wonderful aroma. My patients wife was making pear butter with fresh pears from their tree. She asked me if I wanted some, and thinking that she was going to give me a jar, I said yes. She gave me a tiny taste on a spoon. :-( It was delicious but I would liked to have had a jar!

Good luck and I'll keep on voting!

  9. Uh-oh.... when I went back to try and vote again it said that I had already cast my vote for this entry. :-(

  10. You got my (10) vote Eleniki, I really liked your poem. Aparently you can only vote one time per ISP, so I will vote again when I get home from work.

  11. Very clever, Eleniki, I voted 10 stars. I'll try to vote again tonight from home.

Come on, TDK! She's currently #5, we need to stuff the ballot box!

  12. I voted 10 stars,I liked your poem Eleniki and I'm really impressed and hopeful that you win so you can help your village even more.

  13. Hey, thanks everybody!! I'm happy you're voting for me. If I do win this one, I have to say I think it would be because the other poems are rather bad.....but having said that, you never know what people like, and maybe if it's a jingle they're looking for, other poems might suit that better than mine. And no, you can't vote more than the once I think :(
WWM, I have just read Three Cups of Tea, and thought it was excellent. I want to go back to Nepal - I made some very good friends there, really got under the skin of the culture, which is utterly different to anything I had experienced before. The people have nothing, yet I saw happiness shining out of many many of the people's eyes. Another very good book, this time relating to Nepal and an American woman's experience teaching there 20 or 30 years ago, is 'The Violet Shyness of their Eyes'. I identified with so much of what she wrote. I could go on about Nepal, but will maybe keep it for another thread, or a link to a blog. Thanks again.

  14. Oh, and just to put things in perspective, the €200 prize for this part of the Pear Factor competition would supply a Nepali village child with schooling for one year in an 'English' school (where all subjects are taught through English rather than Nepali, as in the free state schools, giving the students a much greater opportunity to have a career in tourism, medicine, engineering, politics or teaching. For this money, not only do they receive a better education, but also their uniform, books, stationary, transport (when there are buses), and 'tiffin' (middle of day food). I know some people who would think nothing of spending that amount of money on dinner for two in a posh restaurant in Dublin City Centre..

  16. This is such an awesome cause!!! I have found that if I clear out my cookies then refresh the page I can vote again...

To delete cookies from Internet Explorer, click on tools, then Internet Options, box will open up, click on button that says "delete cookies" click okay. Refresh the web page and it will allow you to vote again.

I have found I can keep repeating this process as long as I go through the above steps!!!
Good Luck How long will this contest be running???

    Posted 7 months ago by 2bpurring #

  17. Oh wow 2bpurring, I just did it myself!! (that's not very honorable now is it?) But it is a very good cause, and I do like the idea of such a big company contributing to the welfare of children in Bhimsenthan village without even knowing it (if I win). Thanks for that sleuth work on my behalf! The competition runs for 11 more days.

  18. She's 3rd now, but needs more votes. Her poem is more highly rated than those in 1st and 2nd place, but has too few votes. Come on TDKers, only a few days left to vote.

  19. LOL, Eleniki...I didn't even read the other poems, I just voted for yours...I knew it would be the best!

Posted 7 months ago by Annie R #

  20. Thanks guys! You are the best!!

Posted 7 months ago by eleniki #

  21. 10 stars or a pair of 5's for your "Pearpoem" (PS I like pear bubbly cider...just in case you need to know!)

Posted 7 months ago by jeankit #

  22. I voted (10)--she is now #2! Let's get her up to #1 folks--we can DO it!

Posted 7 months ago by rainingwolf #

  23. I just voted. Let's keep it going!

Posted 7 months ago by oakcrone #

  24. I also discovered you can vote "against" the other poems. Buy voting them one star it lowers their star value! I liked yours best Elenki.

Posted 7 months ago by DancingCatHill #

  25. Yay! I was able to vote again from home. Now, if I can just figure out how to clear the cache on the Mac...

    Go Eleniki!

Posted 7 months ago by Kilroy #

  26. Kilroy, I have a Mac too (they're the greatest). To clear your cookies, click on search engine in bold beside the apple symbol, top left (mine is Safari), go to Preferences, then Show Cookies, then you can remove all cookies from there! But hey, I'm first now!!! My sister, her son, and my partner, who's away with his daughter, voted about 20 times each last night! (Terrible ain't it..!) I'm a bit confursed as to how this could be a fair winning situation anyway, as obviously every entry gets their facebook contacts (I'm not on facebook, nor would I want to be..) etc to vote away - the competition even provides a link. I suppose it's all about awareness raising for Bulmers. But I don't understand which is the decider, the rating or the amount of votes. So, yes, by giving another entry just one star you reduce their rating, but does that give them an advantage too, by raising their votes? Dunno, it's a bit vague as a system! Thanks so much everyone!

Posted 7 months ago by eleniki #

  27. I voted! I was so witty, clever and a bit humorous as well. And awesome way to spend your winnings should you be chosen! I'll (ashamed? a little but not too much!) vote some more tomorrow - er later today!

Posted 7 months ago by SnowFlower #

  28. I voted for you too Eleniki, simply love your poem. Apparently my family way back on the tree, were apple cider and also perry makers in Hereford.
Ohhhhhhhhh wonderful, you're at number one! ! !

    Posted 7 months ago by Moonshadow_NZ #

  29. Voting-clear cache-voting-clear cache and so on...This is such a wonderful poem and wonderful cause, I don't feel bad at all...I could do this all day!!!

    Posted 7 months ago by 2bpurring #

  30. Thanks 2B - I'm sure you have more interesting things to be doing! I really appreciate it. I'm number one now, thanks to all of you!
