  1. Im just a mess right now. Ive been crying since the Vet kindly broke me the news that he suspected. I took Turbo to a different Vet this morning after he was sneezing all night and seeming so restless 24/7. The vet said that he should do a FELV test, and I was okay but when I heard the results I was just so heartbroken. The Vet told me that he needs to be hospitalized and that he wanted me to call the rescue I got the kitten from before going through with it because he understood that I was a college student and it would cost thousands. I have been trying to call the woman I got Turbo from for advice and haven't reached her yet. I am considering about going on care credit for it, but the Vet was honest because he felt bad about my financial status as a student on loans and said that it will cost thousands but he won't have a real fighting chance regardless. I am stuck with what to do. He looks healthy but keeps sneezing and the Vet says that the test might not be 100% accurate since I told him the my room has a huge draft and Turbo was given two baths to rid of fleas this week which made him cold. Im going to another Vet tonight and seeing what I should do from there with hospitalization. Please pray for him. I cannot believe this is happening to this sweet guy I don't want him to go, and Its so hard because I just lost pepper. I keep saying its unfair and why.

-Please Turbo, please make it through.

  2. Didn't the rescue test for this? Most legitimate places test and disclose results for FELV and FIV. I cannot offer advice in terms of what to do financially. If you've never been there, go to the Best Friends website www.bestfriends.org and look for info on FELV. Many cats live long lives with it and FIV (I think that is the proper moniker). It just depends on how sick he is with it (or anything else). Hang in there and have faith in yourself that you will do the best thing for both of you and we are here for you no matter what. {{{{Theresa}}}} {{{{Turbo}}}}

  3. {{{Theresa and Turbo}}}, you are doing the right thing by taking him to a second vet, Lainey has some good suggestions. I am praying that you find a way to keep Turbo and he can live a healthy life even though he has FELV. Stay strong, Turbo is depending on you....

  4. Theresa, read the information on the link below and/or Google "FIV test for kittens". There is a chance that Turbo has tested positive but isn't really positive.

It is possible that if you treat the UTI symptoms and he gets better that he will retest negative when he's a bit older. And, like others have said, some cats live longer and happy lives even when they do have FIV.

  5. Hon,sometimes kittens test positive for FELV (a false positive) because their Mom had FELV,some convert to negative after about a month or longer. Please see the second vet but please don't do anything based on these results until you get the second test. Also many kittens,in fact most seem to come w/ an upper respiratory infection and worms. I would kinda take it slow w/ the vaccines and dewormer, sometimes all that medicine will overwhelm a kitten.
I will also pray that this is the case and Turbo is OK. [[[[Hugs]]]
I'm sorry you're going through all this stress,I would take it easy on the baths and keep him warm.

  6. im hoping for a second test to show its negative.

i mean, even if he has FELV and is sickly now, if he gets better he still has a chance of a longer life right? I def will NOT put him to sleep unless he is in intolerable pain. I'm looking up all the information I can find about FELV and antiboitics and treatment. Thank you for the support. ITs such a hard blow for both my boyfriend and I. I never experience a death close to me or news of someone getting cancer that was close enough to affect me. When I heard the news I was went so pale and completely brainless of future. Turbo is AMAZING I hope god will give him strength and help me help him.

  7. And I cant get a hold of the rescue yet, but I have no idea why they didn't test him for FELV (he's FIV negative btw). The rescue does ONLY save dogs and cat that are about the be euthanize so I am wondering if the Orange County Shelter was going to euthanize him because they knew he had FELV, but they should have let the rescue know anyways, and that information should have been passed to me.

  8. Theresa, the tears are understandable but know FELV is NOT a death sentence. Growing up we had three cats who had the disease and they lived healthy lives right up until the end. They all lived over 15 years. As they got old it did become apparent they could no longer fight infections in the same way as a cat without FELV and eventually we did put them to sleep. But they can live a very full life with the disease. Know you have all the support and love and prayers here that you could ever need. Many hugs to Turbo!

  9. Theresa I have had FeLV+ cats. It is how I got my name. Sox was FeLV+ as was his mother and all his siblings. They all died long before he did. His mother was a feral cat. She and her kittens were all captured and destroyed because our shelter will not allow an FeLV+ kitten or cat to be adopted. I was lucky. The mother had left Sox in a friend of my daughter's truck he was working on--in the engine. She had moved all the others to a different neighbor. The boy's mother knew I loved cats and wanted to know if her son (who was dating my daughter) could bring her the kitten. He was a train wreck from the work go. It cost $400 to get rid of the fleas and degrease him and get him tested. He tested negative the first time--I tested too young. He was hit hard at 9 months. His blood was about the texture and color of rusty water. He didn't make it. In the meantime my Russian Blue Basil, who was current on all vaccinations, contracted the virus. My vet said put him down and save Teaser. She never contracted the virus. I refused. My vet said 6 months at best. 2 years later he developed kidney failure. Because of the FeLV status he just didn't have the immunity to fight infection. He lived for 2 years and they were a wonderful 2 years. I belong to another site that is all feline leukimia cat owners. They held my hand and walked me through everything. On this site (TDK) I found more compassion than I could possibly imagine. On the other site I had the medical support my baby needed. I have met others now that have had FeLV+ cats that have lived from 1 year to 15 years with the virus! Feline Leukimia is not an automatic death sentence! Right now you are in shock and still reeling. Please know you are not alone. If you want the other site I will post it. In the meantime you have my prayer--you and Turbo both!

  10. I was hoping Soxsmom would come in on this thread, as she is experienced in this illness. It is a hard blow after all you've been through with Pepper, Theresa, but listen to the positive message here - I have heard of many kitties who have lived long lives with FeLV. Recently I spoke to a woman whose cat had just passed away at the age of 14, and she said, almost as an afterthought 'She did live to a great old age really, given that she had feline leukemia all her life'. I was so heartened to hear that. Don't be sad too soon. Give Turbo all the love he needs right now, and take it from here. We're all thinking of you, and hoping another test will yield good news.

  11. Soxsmom! Thank you for sharing me your experience and I'm sorry about your loss also. May I have the link to the felv support website?

This is for the list. There are many wonderful members with a wealth of knowlwedge. I personally connected with MaryChristine. She was understanding and very knowledgable when I felt out of my depth. By the way my Sox was a tuxie--I have a feeling that is Turbo in your avitar--a beautiful tuxie. I have another tuxie boy and I truly believe Sox led him to me with the help of one of my students. His name is Deuter Bug.

  13. Start getting lysine into his diet now--it makes a world of difference!

Posted 6 months ago by SoxsMom #

  14. I have a tube of Viralys(Lysine in a "palatable base") nearly unused,I just tried it a few times when my kitty was sick. He didn't need it after all. Also I have a few cans of Hill's A/d which is the best food(calorically dense)to feed a sick cat. If you want me to send it to you(it's kind of pricey and I know you're a college student) send your address to my email mcglmr at gmail dot com.
We all help each other here,a kind of pay it forward. Someone(GD) helped me when I needed something for my kittens.

  15. Praying hard for you and Turbo! My sister had a cat with FELV that lived a happy 6 years, so like others have said, it is not an automatic death sentence. But I know the news must be a shock and horrible to hear. bad news from the vet is always emotional trauma. I am so sorry for you and wish you all the best, especially Turbo. You will be in our thoughts and prayers! Hugs to all of yu from the Kitty clan!

  16. Hello all and thank you for all your prayers!
    UPDATE!

I am waiting on the second test results that is a part of a new complete blood work. Turbo was watering up in the eyes and looking very near death frail today with breathing problems. I got a hold Judy
    S. Taylor yesterday and we had planned to take him in on Monday to her Vet. But since he looks so sickly today, I wanted him to a Vet again asap. I called Judy and she was extremely concern and helpful. She is such an angel, she told me to go to the nearest 24 hours hospital (ugghhh all normal Vets are closed on Sunday) and she would call them and put the charge on her credit card. (OMG I know! She's is super super kind and caring). I rushed him to All Care Animal Referral Center in Fountain Valley,CA and I had to wait 2 HOURS just for a Vet to see him. At least they freaked out and let me wait in a private room instead of the waiting room when I told the receptionist that he tested FELV+ yesterday. The Vet here seemed so rushed and concerned about catching FELV+ to their pets at home, since the Vet came in and learned about his FELV+ test and went out for another 20 minutes just to find gloves to wear so she wouldn't give it to her cats at home. This is a legit concern but she didn't need to take that long because my kitten was just dying there. The Vet, Dr. Jennifer Ben-Oz, told me almost the opposite of yesterday's vet about his future. Yesterday's Vet told me that he was quickly deteriating and may die in 3 days to a week. The Vet today said that Feline Lukemia takes 4 years to fully develop and affect the cat in a deadly way. She didn't show any concern that he might not be able to fight off a cold because of his other illness. She kept saying that he wasn't dying right now even though he looked otherwise to me. I insisted that she do something IF it actually was the Leukemia that was killing him right now but she kept telling me that she believed he was sick with something else like a upper respiratory infection or pneumonia. They told me that they wanted to take Xrays of his chest and do a full bloodwork with a retest for FELV and FIV. I said ok, and they told me to come back an hour later. I didn't even get to see him for another 2.5 hours because they TOOK FOREVER to get a Vet technician to go get him from the "back". I dont even know what conditions were like back in the hospital but it didn't seem like they did ANYTHING at all to help him during his time getting tested and Xray or else they would have charge the bill and listed it you know. They did prescribe me Vibramycin as anitbotics for his sneezing/ cold, but the Vet tech knocked over the bottle when she was showing me how to administer the medicine in his mouth and was like "Oh its just alittle spill there is still enough in there" and I was like "No! he needs it all!" and she finally went to get more but now that I am looking at it at home it looks way less ARGH!. And they charged and overcharge us for items i didn't get for the IV bag and needle kit to administer fluids to Turbo every 12 hours. Its scary to have to stick a needle into him myself but he's dehydrated. I kept asking questions and they threw back vague answers. I feel so bad that Judy is paying this rotten place $340 for nothing helpful really except the meds and the overpriced blood test that I will get results tomorrow. I came in at like 4pm, and they charged me an emergency visit priced for 6pm-12pm because they were so slow with service and didn't discharge Turbo until 8:30pm. His Xrays were $100 and it showed that he had no fluid in his chest (yay!). I am so blessed that someone picked up the tab this time but I fear that he will have more medical problems and special needs in the future. And I will not ask Judy for more financial help. I am thinking of applying for care credit for the future since there will be plenty of Vet visits if Turbo boy stick it through this little bump of his long journey to be healthy. Do you have to use it if you apply for it? Or should I apply for it when I know I will absolutely need it.

Edit: - Do you think its weird if I request a refund of the things they over charged me? Its like $5, $2, $4, and 4 more IV needles that I didn't get that they charge. It adds up to like $15 that doesn't balance out on the bill. Its not my money, its Judy's and I think its just right even though the amount is so minuscule to the overall bill. At first the bill was only $230 and I signed off from it and notified Judy, but they came back an hour later apologizing and saying that they didn't charge me the $100 xrays and would have to give me another bill which is really unprofessional because I was still waiting 1 hour into my 2 hour wait to get my kitten from the back, from where he was not receiving any treatment at all at the hospital. No IVs were given to him while he was there. He was done with his tests when I came back to the Vet and yet it took them two hours to get a Vet tech to be free to retrieve him! Poor baby, he was all along and probably cold.

Turbo is still sickly, but is getting better with the fluids and meds for now. Please pray for him! And pray that his second test comes back negative for FELV and everything. There can still be a miracle!

  18. News:
I got a personal call from Dr. Yoo from the Crenshaw Animal Hospital in Torrance,Ca because he is a close friend of Judy. He apologized for not getting to me earlier because he was teaching seminars this weekend at Western. I was supposed to go to him on Monday. I feel utterly lucky to have so much support. (Please check out http://bumperfound.org/ , where Judy volunteers for. She mostly saves kittens on her own expense and time apart from the foundation but I know she supports them alot). He asked me to send all the paperwork to him and we will see from there. He seems so knowledgeable and sincerely concern. And its kinda awesome that he's Asian and he loves animal, because I am too Asian and I feel like there are not many Asian Veterinarians and Animal lovers as other races. My parents grilled into my head when I was little that having pets was dirty and it was always humans first. I love animals, and I love Turbo (and Peps) and will do anything for them. I have been considering of graduating with my B.S in Business Econ and psych at UC Irvine and then going back to a State school to do Veterinary school requirements while I work full time. :] This is the first time I have smiled in the last few days.* Tomorrow holds the future.

  20. What a hideous place that Fountain Valley is. It is disgusting that even vet medicine has gone this way - more of the same super-materialistic b*s* now found in human clinics and hospitals the world over. I read your description of poor Turbo's visit with horror. Poor boy, he must have been pretty scared and confused. And you're right - if they couldn't even make him comfortable, what kind of an animal hospital are they? I would most certainly complain, draw their attention to the overcharges, and DEMAND that the money be refunded immediately. I always think it's so predictable that big money-making racketeers like this always make mistakes on the bill the WRONG WAY. How many times have you found on examining a bill that they've undercharged? Very seldom, or if they do, you can bet they're on to you double quick (like the forgotten x-ray).
I think it fantastic that despite your parents' attempts to create a neutral or even negative attitude towards animals in you, you ended up being such a compassionate animal lover. Go, Theresa! And it's so wonderful that Dr. Yoo contacted you personally - now that is unusual. Let us know how things go when Turbo sees him. Meanwhile look after your boy, and make him extra cosy. You can help him with the dehydration by also syringing water/pedalyte/ warm chicken broth into the back of his mouth (half ml at a time) and by gently wiping his eyes and nose with a warm saline solution. You can get a baby syringe in the pharmacy. Good luck until you see Dr. Yoo! Hugs.

  23. Theresa...Yes...do Demand reimbersment for what was not given,or the items carelessly left out. Also,be sure to ask for a copy of All paperwork of work done. If they really did x-rays & all that, you will have evidence of it & they will be less inclined to manipulate the bill,or the proper services that Turbo deserves.

    Shame on Fountain Valley!

And Bless You & Judy & her vet for caring so much about Turbo.

  25. Teresa I'm so sorry to hear this about Turbo BUT I'm not sure why the hospitalization should run so high. I had a lovely siamese cat years ago when the vaccine first came out for felv and she wasn't even sick but when I took her in to the vet he tested her positive and said she couldn't be given the vaccine under the circumstances. He kept her there and said he'd retest to be sure. Meantime..he crammed her full of concentrated vit. goo (the stuff they have in tubes) and within a week...he again tested her and got a negative reading and proceeded to give her the vaccine. He was delighted as he hadn't yet known there was hope for felv positive cats. He did not charge me as it had turned into such a positive fact finding mission for him but frankly I don't see where Turbo's care should run into sooooo much money. =( I'm sorry Teresa and will send you and Turbo my heartfelt prayers. What a crummy birthday present for you! =( (((Teresa))) (((Turbo)))

  26. {{{HUGS}}} as has been said, not a death sentence. Many cats test positive and never have symptoms. Good luck! Nad yes, demand a refund of what you didn't receive---stand in the waiting room and be loud!
