  1. We're having Breakfast on the Beach, on the shores of lovely Lake Michigan this morning.

The waves are quietly shuushing on the shore, the sandpipers are busy, and the agency kittehs are torn between chasing them and getting the buffet ready!

It's going to be a lovely day to spend at the beach! Gentle breezes carry the promise of warm weather to follow. Cloudless skies, beautiful blue water and white sands...

Select your favorites from the buffet, grab a kitteh or three, and find an empty chair with an umbrella and enjoy!

  2. Morning, Siobhan, that sounds divine! I will take a fluffy ginger kitten please and some chocolate croissants and apricot Danish (running low on blood sugar...) How are you today?

  3. Doing pretty well, Jcat, it really -is- a cloudless morning here in SW Michigan, high to be about 86 :-) (hands the food and purring kitte to JCat). How 'bout choo?

  4. I will take a nice big kitty to love. Give me a big beach hat and sunglasses too as my head is killing me! I will get myself some cereal and milk off the buffet. Need to take it easy on my tummy if my head hurts! Thanks for the lovely place to have the Cafe, Sio! Morning JCAT

  5. What a nice setting for the cafe today! It's a beautiful day here as well. As I was driving in today I was thinking that if there wasn't so much to do to get ready to open school, I would have loved to take the day off, even a half day. Started to feel sorry for myself; 2009 hasn't been what I'd hoped, the summer is almost gone and wasn't anything great, but this setting most certainly helps!
Oh agency kittehs? Please fetch me a glass of pineapple juice and a cheesy omlet, and keep me company. Oh and be quiet around MC, her head hurts. Thanks!

  6. Morning, MC and Joan, I hate to eat and run (and especially to run from this lovely spot) but I am starting to have to prop my eyelids open, hope you both have a great day, and everyone else too!

*Tiptoes away so as not to disturb MC's head and several dozing kitties.*

  7. **A few kittens with FAR too much energy for this early hour, are starting to make a sand castle around MC to make her feel better... they hope that watching them play at molding the castle will make her headache go away ... **

One particularly bold kitten climbs into MC's lap and begins to purr and knead... her eyes grow heavy and her head falls into MC's hand ... kerploof! kitten asleep

  9. Hi MC, Sio, Joan, Jcat!!! Nice day in Fla too. I love your beach party. I will graze the buffet and get me some english muffins w/orange marmalade and egg scrabbled w/cream cheese and a cuppa joe. Sorry your head is hurtin' today MC. Everyone enjoy your day!

  10. I'm going to try to make some orange marmalade for Christmas gifts this year :-)

Posted 2 months ago by Siobhan #

  11. Thata's a great idea! I am going to make my honey butter for gifts too!

  12. Cool idea, Sio! My Mom used to make the BEST grape jelly ever! We had grape arbors in the backyard and loved picking the grapes when they were ripe, knowing that Mom would be making lots and lots of grape jelly. I don't ever remember store-bought jelly in our house growing up.

  13. I learned how to can in high school. We did bread and butter pickles and apple butter. :-) I've done habaneros (cold pack) and salsa, apple butter and applesauce (hot pack).

This weekend we're making more salsa. My husband made labels for the first eight pints, called it "Siobhan's whupass salsa"

It wasn't THAT hot (lol) but bless his heart. He helped out a LOT, especially with the scalding and seeding. That's the messiest part.

We're also planning on doing cold pack jalapenos and mild pepper rings. I looked for recipes for canning pesto but can't find any. I guess I'll freeze it instead. I have a MASSIVE crop of fresh basil this year. I make it up and freeze it in ice cube trays, pop out the frozen cubes, and use my seal-a-meal to put a couple cubes in each packet. This works -very- well, better than freezing them in a ziploc. Less freezer burn.

  14. Joan, were those grapes with seeds? What do you use, the whole grape (minus seeds)?

Posted 2 months ago by Siobhan #

  15. Thank the kitties for their "MC Castle", I'll just quietly nap in here. The nice lap kitty is a welcome addition. A house is not a home without a cat.

WAH! I miss my mom's homeade strawberry perserves and grape jelly! Those were the good old days!

  16. SOM, try adding a wee bit of cinnamon to your honey butter. It's marvelous. I got some fancy cinnamon from Penzey's spices (you can buy online). I think they carry something like four varieties, all of them much more aromatic than what we find in the grocery store today.

Posted 2 months ago by Siobhan #

  17. Yes, the whole grape minus the seeds. That was the messy part!

Posted 2 months ago by JoanfromNewJersey #

  18. Thanks Sio. I do add cinnamon, but just the OTC kind. I really should get some 'special' cinnamon for the butter.

  19. Morning to all...Breakfast at the Beach...sounds wonderful! I wish I had the day off. I would stay awhile & snooze with a special tabby! Since it is only
Tuesday off to work with a cup of black java and some raisin toast with butter, cinnamon & sugar.MMmmm have a great day/eve! My mom made rose hip
jelly once...very pale greenish/pink...smelled like roses with a very lite taste of it too. Used as an accompinament with dessert biscuit cookies.

  20. Morning all! Siobhan, I really love Penzey's. Have you tried their freeze dried shallots? You will never go back to minced onions again! I visited their store in Birmingham alabama last month and spent a small fortune.

    Posted 2 months ago by KYKAT 12 23 #

  21. No I haven't tried the freeze dried shallots, maybe I'll have to put that on my list for next time I visit Penzey's :-)

I really like the Pasta Sprinkles. Husband uses that a lot, esp. on frozen pizzas.

Yeah, Joan, seeding those grapes would be tedious work, but yummy worth it later!

Ooh, rosehip jelly....that sounds like a treat fit for a Queen!

Posted 2 months ago by Siobhan #

  22. I have had rosehip tea, but never rosehip jelly. Has anyone else ever heard of kidzu flower jelly? The flowers smell a lot like grapes. After battling evil kudzu for so many years in Alabama, I don't think I could ever eat anything made from it. For me it would be like consuming pure evil! Now some good blackberry jelly on toast made from fresh baked bread....that I could do this morning!

  23. Mmmmm Penzys...I worked about 2 blocks away from Penzys at my last job. I would take a walk up the road on pleasant days with the scent of spices in the air. It made the walk a pleasure...Fun place to visit too!

Posted 2 months ago by jeankit #

  24. Jean you are so lucky! I have to buy on-line or visit the Birmingham store when I am down visiting family. Anyone who loves to cook, check them out their spices really are a higher quality than the grocery store ones.

  25. What a beautiful picture you painted of the breakfast scene this morning Sio. Helped to erase what I saw on the way to work this morning. I was stopped at red light, and here comes this older (60'ish maybe) man on his bike. He had on a black Speedo... and shoes. No shirt. ACK!! My son rolls down the window and yells at him - get some pants ! OMG... all I could do was laugh ! Speedos should be outlawed !!!

Now, I'd love a chai tea and I'll go through the buffet line for some fresh fruit (papayas, mangoes) and slice of whole grain toast with a little butter. That should hold me 'til lunch.

  26. Slow day in the cafe today. Right now I am sitting in a real cafe waiting on an order of drunken noodles and a salad with ginger dressing. Anyone wanna share?

    Posted 2 months ago by KYKAT 12 23 #

  27. What are drunken noodles...maybe I'll have a taste...do I need chopsticks?!
I have some red grapes left from my lunch...you can have a bunch!

Posted 2 months ago by jeankit #

  28. Wahahahaha 2P, that's too funny. Now I need a Brillo pad to scrub the image out of my brain....

Posted 2 months ago by Siobhan #

  29. Good luck Siobhan... it's still stuck in mine!

Drunken noodles... I think I divorced him years ago. Oh wait - you're talking a food here. Hmmmm.... interesting.

Posted 2 months ago by 2 Popoki #

  30. I'm so sorry you saw that ridiculous man on the way to work, 2P. I hope he follows your son's advice and starts wearing pants. *shudders*

Hubby and I are heading to Ashland, Oregon by way of Crater Lake today. It is a beautiful day and the lake should be a spectacular deep blue. I will take photos and post them. We will be meeting our neighbors/BFFs in Ashland tomorrow and take in several Shakespearean and other plays over the next few days.
