  1. Hello, I just adopted two new kittens (not littemates) and I would like advice about how to help them adjust and get along. The older one is five months, and he seems comfortable with his surroundings and with his younger playmate. The younger one is nine weeks, and is very frisky. He seems comfortable with his surroundings, but hisses at his reflection (we've covered the mirrors for now) and at the other kitten. The older kitten sometimes playfully pounces or taps the younger one, and the younger one will hiss and attack in a possibly dangerous way. I don't want the older one to get injured while trying to teach his new younger brother how to play!

  2. Hi, MisterJesse. Welcome to the Daily Kitten! I added a tag to the top of this thread called introducing new kitten. Click on it and you will find multiple threads on this topic. Don't be discouraged. These two will most likely be fast friends after they figure out the pecking order. The rule of thumb is to take it slow. Keep them apart if you aren't there to supervise their interactions.

Please keep posting and let us know how they are getting along. We'd love to see photos too! Click on my avatar to see photos of my three kits, Digit, Furl and Boots. :)

  3. Thanks for the advice, and the welcome. I saw some advice on another site that added that since cats become familiar based on smell, to try using a piece of cloth to take scent from the glands near their butts and put it on the other one's butt. I don't know if that was what did it or not, but they're seeming to get along just fine. They also came back from the shelter with an upper respiratory infection, so it could be that the misery of being sick has brought them together.

  4. Hi Misterjesse, sorry I missed your post yesterday - a belated welcome to TDK!

Glad to hear things are a little better, the smell transfer thing would definitely have helped. One product you might like to consider if there are any further problems is Feliway - it's a synthetic feline hormone, available as a plug in diffuser, and is very good at calming stressful issues with cats.
