  2. i agree. the main thing i know about are dairy barns, the one i work for i'd say is doing a great job. however i've been in one that the gates were tied together with twine, the animals in there easily will get out and almost everytime at least one of them walks into the manure pit and dies. i only know that because they got out once when the owner wasn't around and my dad, some other person that stopped, and me went and got them all back into the barn and the barn is on a busy road which some of the heifers went onto. the people that rent out the barn to the person who has animals there told us the rest, the time before they got out 8 animals drowned...

the dairy farm i am working for keeps everything very clean though the people that feed the newborn calves should do a better job of dipping the calf and not play drums on the way to feeding it with the bottle.

My dad and I are the only people that feed their calves once they come to the calf barn. Both the milk replacer and grains reps say our calves are THE best they ever see. That means a lot since they aren't supposed to say that since the milk replacer and grain come from two differant companies...you can't say that the calves look great if they aren't on all your stuff. However they both have said that we have the best looking calves in the three states they cover and wish that other farms would follow our example since all calves should be able to look like ours. it just makes a big differance in how much you care. i am glad that our calf barn only loses 0.5% of the calves that come through from something that could have possibly been preventable. Yes occasionally we have the owner come and shot one of the calves however these calves are in way to much pain and you know that they are going to die so it is more humane to just help them die than leave them like that.
