What makes Target fashionable?

(12 posts)
  1. Some time last year or two years ago, a new Target opened up within a short bunny-hop from where I live. Among the big-box, discount retailers, what makes Target (sometimes facetiously pronounced Tar-zhay) sexy? Until Kmart merged with Sears, it was quite plain (one would not be caught dead in Kmart, even if a homemaker with three or so young children). Wal-Mart's just plain weird, not to mention it treats both its workers here and its suppliers abroad very badly. When I go to Target (can you tell I love Target?), I don't feel like I'm shopping discount. Target.com is just off the hook! When was the last time one could color-coordinate his or her entire home based on what his or her favorite color is: the '70s? I feel like a child again.

  3. Well, I believe that at least for now Target has that rare comodity among the discount volume retailers: Marketing people with taste.

I give you the following example. I hate to purchase anything that advertises the product I purchase. I hate to buy Icon emblazoned anything. If Coca Cola wants me to advertise their product, they can bloody well pay me. I will not pay them to advertise their product.

On the other hand, I wanted to join the "green revolution" as regards shopping bags. Plain canvas bags with sturdy handles cost $5 or more dollars each at a craft store. Materials to self craft are not much better then you have to put in the time. All the shops and groceries have their nasty logo emblazoned reusable bags at roughly $1.25 each.

Target's bags are red with a stylized snowscape of trees with perching birds. The leaves/snow are varied size Target logos and there are no words identiying the source in large letters anywhere on the bags. Subtle and I deemed this an acceptable compromise.

Wally-world, HyVee, Walgreens.....everybody else can just suck it up when I shop there with my Target bags.

  4. I have by now quite a collection of shopping bags; no matter where I go, it's obvious they're not exclusive.
Maybe I should explore my Target store a little more. If I am unfortunate, sooner or later I'll have one right beneath my windows. Ever notice how close DEVELopment is to DEVILment? There's nothing GREEN about them. Those fields below my windows are going to be filled up by SOMEbody. A pox on them. I may have to move then. KPMom.

  5. Ailuromaniac hit the nail on the head, marketing people with taste, subtle shopping bags etc. That's the sort of store I would prefer to shop in but have trouble finding. We don't have Target here. We have The Warehouse, there fashion buyers must have their tastebuds in there big toes, terrible unflattering garments or the same style garment from smallest to largest size. Like that will work!

  7. I am a Target shopper and love them. I should own stock in that place. That is where I get all my paper products, my toys, my baby clothes mostly etc..they rock. I just love that place. Vicki..you go to the one on W.117th? I haven't been to that one..my MIL lives on W. 116th so I know exactly where that one is. I go to the one at Westgate in Fairview Park.

  8. Dee, I just saw http://peopleofwalmart.com/. ROTFLMAO! I even dared go to YouTube to watch that travesty of a videographer rickytic3. That boy has issues. For shopping at Target: my needs are simple; I don't buy a whole lot, but what I do buy is at least decent quality.

  9. Ok...now I have to check out nutty Ricky!

BTW, the pic of the Charles Manson lookalike with a baby stroller on the WM site made me crack up!

  10. Target is actually disturbingly like The Warehouse in nz. They even have the same colour scheme.
It's all about being understated and providing good service. But I have noticed that Target has waaaay better style. Warehouse shoes were alright, and actually I've never seen the show section of Target, but their clothes are much better.
MS, NZ actually does have target, but they only sell furniture, go figure :)
I discovered when we arrived that nightie of mine that KK bought for me many years ago is from Target LOL
