The stuff in the article is definitely interesting, but it seems too quick to say that coffee actively prevents all the things mentioned in the article. For example:
"A 2009 study found that people who drank three to five cups of coffee a day at midlife were 65 percent less likely to develop Alzheimer's in their later years, compared to those who drank little or no coffee."
The text implies causation, but it could just be correlation. Rather than coffee preventing Alzheimer's, it could be that:
1. People who are healthy in their 40's-50's work more hours.
2. People who work more hours drink more coffee than people who work fewer hours.
3. People who are healthy in their 40's-50's are less likely to develop Alzheimer's later in life.I'm not claiming that this is all true, but if it is, it would produce a similar positive correlation between coffee drinking and developing Alzheimer's later in life.
The short-term benefits mentioned in the article, such as fewer pains after a heavy workout, seem less speculative. I remember reading other similar studies a while ago about how drinking coffee can help improve short-term mental abilities, including performance on school tests and in chess tournaments.
