  1. So we just picked up our boys from the vet. They had their "spa" day today!
Not so sure it was a good adventure ! Is it normal for the vet to ask if you want to pay an extra $18.00 per kitten for a pain injection ?!!

I feel so bad they are completely looped and their bottoms are sad little versions of what they were this morning !

This vet was recommended by the rescue we fostered from so I think it should be reputable but I still feel like they weren't the best place we could have taken the boys. First, it smelled like urine, the vet didn't greet us at all and the receptionist signed his name on the neuter certificates, not to mention the first shock of being asked if I wanted to pay extra to make sure they weren't in any pain !!

Am I just being an over protective kitty mom ?? I feel so bad for them right now!

  2. Oh my goodness - I have never heard of a vet asking for an extra fee for pain medication. I would be seriously suspect of that. I think the best thing that you can do for them now is just a lot of TLC. That should go much further than any injection!

I understand feeling bad. I felt the same way when I took my girls to the spa, even though I knew it was the right thing. We just love them that much!

  3. I've had that same experience with the vet we use. I would like to think that pain meds are part of the basic spay fee, but I've always been asked if I want it given in a way that makes me feel guilty if I don't agree. I know they are unconscious when they are being operated on, but they seem to bounce back pretty fast after they wake up. I've always opted for the pain meds. I wonder how necessary they are. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Spanky, your kits will be right as rain in no time. You've done a very responsible thing by taking care of this. :)

  4. That is a very common thing SPM. Most low cost vets operate that way and every lowcost and free service has charged extra for pain meds (for both boys and girls) My regular vet (which is not a low cost one) had a stamp for the receptionists to use for signing work (you see that in doctors offices too)

  5. Thanks for the kind words and reassurance!! I am just feeling very guilty !! They are normally crazy all over the place kittens and now they are sad little drunkin babies with shaved bottoms !! Poor things !! Thanks for making me feel a little better !! I will keep you all updated on their progress tomorrow. :(

  6. I agree with TKN -- well, at least that seems to be the way it is here in NZ too. I remember I was a bit shocked when I first picked up some cats from the vet that our shelter uses -- it seemed a bit 'basic' to me but our shelter director believes the vet there is the best vet in the area and she should know. Sadly, the vets that put the animals ahead of their bank balances often do not have the bells and whistles that more fancy practices have -- it doesn't mean they're not great vets. When I was a child we took our animals to a local vet that looked great and cost a terrific amount -- but in my opinion, the service was dreadful.

  8. My vet ALWAYS asks if I want my pets to have extra pain medication--beyond what is absolutely needed for whatever procedure they are undergoing. I have always paid the extra $8 for the pain medication. I think my vet is wonderful. He calls to check on all my babies. His wife even followed up with the decision for Sherlock's knee surgery. She is supporting me in my decision to wait for age and strength to help him. Since she has gone through this she has shared tips and how I can prepare him. He can't exercise, so his diet is high protien. I want him full grown before the surgery.

  9. UPDATE: So its been a couple days since my boys went to the vet. The pain meds are finally out of there system and yesterday their eyes looked normal ( not looped ) for the first time since.

I am seeing some change in their behavior. They don't want to be picked up as much, I can only assume that their bottom half is still tender so I will dismiss this. But they are being more aggressive, TT nipped at me for the first time this morning when I was handing out treats! He has never done that before. Also they are clawing at the window screens and climbing the curtains, they have always been really good and never displayed this type of crazy........Is this their way of getting back at me for taking them to the vet? Have any of you had your boys come back aggressive after being neutered ?

  10. I've always known that our vet was special, but all these comments really reinforces that. He sent us home with a bottle of pain meds when our girls went to the spa. There wasn't any extra charge.

I'm so glad to hear the boys are doing well, Spanky_Mouse!

  11. Deuter didn't want to be around me for days. He eventually relented when he wanted attention. My prayers are that the boys will change their attitude and remember how much fun you are!
